Joel Cohen, Writer and Co-Executive Producer on The Simpsons will be in Edmonton on Thursday, April 8th at Alberta College’s Muttart Hall (10050 MacDonald Drive) at 7pm. Cohen will deliver a hilarious and provocative talk on “Lessons in Creativity and Innovation from The Simpsons”.
A Calgary native who graduated from the University of Alberta (’88 BSc), Joel Cohen earned his MBA and found success in the corporate world before making a completely illogical career move into comedy writing. Luckily for him (and taxpayers who fund the welfare system), it all worked out: he became an Emmy-winning writer for The Simpsons – “the greatest TV show of the 20th century” (Time). Cohen’s experience as both a “creative” and a “suit” has not only left him with a puzzling resume, it also gives him a unique perspective to discuss innovation, creativity and their place in business. “The same factors that allow creativity to arise, to live or to die for writers are also present and relevant in corporations and even indiv…

Edmonton Opera - Alberta Ballet Collaboration - Songs Of A Wayfarer, Seven Deadly Sins
Family / Children
Following the popular response and critical acclaim for our 2008 collaboration on Mozart’s Requiem, Edmonton Opera and Alberta Ballet team up once again, this time using works by two ground-breaking German composers. Although from different eras, Gustav Mahler and Kurt Weill were both visionaries, and each explored how music could be pushed to create a world of its own. Choreographers Emily Molnar and Yukichi Hattori are joined by Edmonton Opera’s Brian Deedrick and Conductor Peter Dala to bring us two world-premiere ballets, each with a focus on the expression of the voice and of the body, and each a journey of both geographic and personal discovery. The pieces are reflective and forward-looking, inviting audiences to celebrate the points at which these two great art forms meet.

Edmonton Opera - Otello - Guiseppe Verdi
Performing Arts / Culture
Edmonton Opera’s final offering of the season is the completion of Verdi’s trio of Shakespeare operas. After a mesmerizing Macbeth in 2007 and a raucous Falstaff in 2008, we are proud to bring Verdi’s last tragedy to the stage in April 2010. Otello melds the famous story of jealousy and betrayal with music both compelling and complex, and the result is a work that soars and tumbles with the hopes - and desolation - of its central characters. The opera is faithful to Shakespeare, and the all-Canadian cast will draw audiences into a web of treachery, love, sacrifice and loss.
