Nutrition and Diet for Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer has its own specific diet and nutrition issues. The side effects of cancer treatment can affect your ability to eat and maintain your nutritional status during treatment. In addition there are questions about what foods to eat and how to maintain a healthy weight to reduce the risk of recurrence. This one-hour class covers many of these issues and addresses the following topics:
• How to get the nutrition you need during and after treatment
• Handling side effects that interfere with eating
• Benefit of maintaining a healthy weight
• Food to include or avoid
• Answers to your nutrition questions
The Tracey Birnhak Nutritional Counseling Programs are held on Wednesdays, from 3:00 – 4:00 pm, in the Patient and Family Services Conference Room, First Floor, West Pavilion, in the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. Walkabout: Looking In, Looking Out

A survivorship program open to individuals with cancer and their care partners. This is a special survivorship program which mixes approaches which have proven successful in decreasing distress including physical pain, anxiety, depression, fatigue and worried thinking that disturbs sleep, work, and play.

This interactive workshop is led by the dietitians from the Department of Radiation Oncology and the Abramson Cancer Center. This workshop will provide individualized diet planning and information on creating a healthy diet. The Tracey Birnhak Nutritional Counseling Programs are held on Wednesdays, from 2:30 – 4:00 pm, in the Patient and Family Services Conference Room, First Floor, West Pavilion, in the Perelman Center for the Advanced Medicine Building. Look Good...Feel Better Workshop: A free program of the American Cancer Society that teaches beauty techniques to women who are actively undergoing cancer treatment to help them combat the appearance-related side effects of radiation and chemotherapy. Classes are taught by licensed cosmetologists who have been specially trained and each woman practices techniques using products donated by the cosmetics industry.
Workshops are held on certain Mondays. To register, please call the American Cancer Society National Call Center 1-800-227-2345.

Thanks to all the members of the Penn Medicine/Team CHOP for their participation and success in completing the 2012 LIVESTRONG Challenge. The Abramson Cancer Center and The Cancer Center at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia have been consistent proud supporters of the LIVESTRONG Challenge for the past six years and look forward to this year's Challenge.
The Team LIVESTRONG Challenge Philly will once again take to the streets of Blue Bell and the surrounding countryside for what has become one of LIVESTRONG’s most successful fundraising events. This family-friendly event at the Montgomery County Community College offers participation and volunteer options for everyone, regardless of experience.
On Saturday, August 17, join us out on the 5K run/walk course or test your limits with the 10K course. Nutrition from A to Z: Answers to your nutrition and diet questions

Are you confused by all the information on cancer and nutrition; what to eat and what to avoid? During this one hour class, taught by a Registered Dietitian from the Abramson Cancer Center, your guest ions will be answered by a nutrition expert. The program reviews the current nutritional information and guidelines for cancer patients and survivors. Topics covered include:
• What are your calorie and protein requirements?
• What are phytochemicals?
• Does sugar “feed” cancer?
• Do you need supplements?
