Sovay Berriman

Art & Stage Sovay Berriman’s practice has a strong theme of exploration, through academic and scientific, as well as imaginative endeavours. Despite romantic and cynical extremes which are often apparent, a sense of humour runs through her work offering a release from this otherwise present tension. As well as the production of objects, drawings and texts, Berriman also incorporates events into her practice, such as ‘Ghosts, Landscape, Literature: a walk with Dr. Shelley Trower’ (2009) a commissioned text delivered on moorland in Yorkshire and, ‘Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers Back to Back’ (2008) an overnight screening of all the films of the legendary dance duo. Whether seeking to offer us a route to comprehension or a course of escape is unclear, but what is certain is the importance of fantasy in the topography of Berriman’s work and of her efforts to persuade us to embrace it. Main Gallery. Friday, March 12, 2010, 10:00 AM – Sunday, May 2, 2010, 6:00 PM. Exeter Phoenix, Bradninch Place, Gandy Street, Exeter, Devon EX4 3LS. For more info visit www.exeterphoenix.org.uk.

Vibraphonic DUB PISTOLS & PAMA INTERNATIONAL

Music The Dub Pistols formed in the mid-90s out of the chaos and energy erupting from the Heavenly Social-spawned big beat scene. Barry Ashworth and Jason O'Bryan were determined to mirror their wildly-diverse tastes in similar fashion to heroes like The Clash and Specials, who spectacularly broke out of punk's confines to embrace other musical forms like reggae. Their trademark style utilises special guest singers and MC's to front energetic big beat, dub, reggae and ska-infused tunes - Terry Hall from The Specials is a regular collaborator. Fourth album, Rum & Coke, continues the journey, this time using grooves more as vehicles for a songwriting frenzy which has resulted in their most mature album yet.  Reggae collective Pama International are another band with a Specials connection, featuring as they do Lynval Golding from the latter and they also supported them last year. They utilise classic sounds of yesteryear with a social commentary - think King Tubby's dub stylings meet the southern soul sounds of the… Friday, March 12, 2010, 8:30 PM. Exeter Phoenix.

Vibraphonic SPEECH DEBELLE & GIFT OF GAB

Music A surprise but welcome winner of last year's Mercury Music Prize with her debut album Speech Therapy, Speech Debelle, like all musicians worth listening to, draws you into her universe and makes you glad you visited. Searching was her debut single and a perfect example of the offbeat, folky production that litters the album, as well as the whisper-in-the-ear quality of her vocals, the honeyed tone of her warm voice contrasting with her mature, articulate lyrics and poetic swagger. Renowned for her ground-breaking range of influences and contributors, one thing is certain hip hop has never been done in quite this way before.  Best known as the technically adept MC of the vaunted Blackalicious, Gift of Gab knew that after waiting over 5 years for a follow-up solo release that he would have to really take this one far. Escape 2 Mars signifies the next groundbreaking voyage in the career of an MC who is nothing short of iconic - known for one of live hip hop's most engaging shows and mind-blowing delivery. £12… Saturday, March 13, 2010, 8:30 PM. Vibraphonic THE SKINTS

Music The newest act to join the ranks of the punk reggae world are The Skints. When forming in 2005 they were London teenagers knee-deep in a music scene ruled by ska-punk kings Capdown and King Prawn but it wasn't long before they had reached way back to the likes of Augustus Pablo and Max Romeo for their altogether more rootsy inspiration. Anti Vigilante are a four piece skacore mash up from Buckinghamshire. Since forming in 2004 the band has played extensively across the UK alongside the likes of Random Hand, Howards Alias, Ghost of a Thousand and The Skints. Their style owes as much to low strung hardcore noise as it does to the UK skacore scene that came before them, creating a dynamic that shows potential to achieve a great deal in their genre. £5. Vibraphonic Knife In The Water & Rosemary’s Baby

Music These films are being shown as part of the Polish Film Festival in Exeter – Kinoteka on Tour 2010, not only celebrating the work of director Roman Polanski but also that of soundtrack composer and jazz pianist Krzysztof Komeda, probably the most important artist in the history of Polish Jazz. The Oscar-nominated Knife In The Water (1963 / 94 min / 6pm) is a subtly chilling tale about a married couple who pick up a young hitchhiker to join them on a boating trip provides a background for an agonizingly tense look at male posturing and ego. In Rosemary’s Baby (1968, 136 min, 8.15pm) the mix of Polański’s ordinary settings and Komeda’s score of jazz, 60's pop and unique gothic orchestra lead to a truly disturbing effect in this low key thriller with a shocking twist. Komeda's powerful and chilling theme, The Lullaby, is one of the most memorable of all horror film themes. This event is part of the Polish Film Festival in Exeter - Kinoteka on Tour 2010, which is financially assisted by Polish Cultural Institute a… Thursday, March 18, 2010, 8:00 PM. Exeter Phoenix.

Vibraphonic JOHNNY WINTER and his Band

Music It's difficult to think of many blues-rock icons who have stood the test of time quite as well as the Texas White Lightning, Johnny Winter. Currently enjoying a remarkable renaissance, his sensational appearance on Eric Clapton's recent Crossroads show and ferocious slide guitar soloing on Highway 61 Revisited proved he can still make the sparks fly in the blistering Texas guitar tradition, stretching back to T Bone Walker, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan and ZZ Top. As long as no black cats cross his trail, this promises to be third time lucky and the show of the year! £22. Friday, March 19, 2010, 8:00 PM. Exeter Phoenix.

Vibraphonic THE ORB

Music Pioneers of ambient house music, The Orb is largely the project of Alex Paterson, who’s worked with several different partners since the band’s debut in 1988, the acid house anthem Tripping On Sunshine. Masters of the use of sampling, the band’s early trademark was to develop the style of ambient maestro Brian Eno by using the likes of nature recordings and space broadcasts over a backing of house beats, perfectly summed up with the iconic Little Fluffy Clouds single. Recently the band’s music has shown more dub, minimal techno and hip hop influences. This special live show will feature Dr Alex Paterson and Professor Thomas Fehlmann complete with their visual accomplices. Plus live support from Sunfish with DJ Ambiessence on the mix. £15. 'Books have their Destiny' - Concert of choral polyphony from Treviso & Venice

Music Concert by Collegium Singers of Taunton. Choral Polyphony from Renaissance Treviso and Venice Habent sua fata libelli (‘books have their destiny’) wrote the second century Latin grammarian Terentianus Maurus. Literally thousands of choir books compiled and transcribed over the centuries from European monasteries and cathedrals have been lost forever through war and iconoclasm, though the secrets of these lost repertories are sometimes revealed in small fragments of formerly large collections. On 6th April 1944 the archives of Treviso Cathedral held 25 manuscripts of polyphonic music written before 1630. An allied air raid on the 7th destroyed 14 of them. Thanks to the painstaking work of modern scholars such as Bonnie Blackburn, sixteenth century repertory from Treviso Cathedral has been painstakingly reconstructed, allowing a unique glimpse into its rich musical tradition and of the talents of composers such as Giovanni Nasco, Pietro Spalenza, Francesco Santacroce and their more famous colleagues Cipria… Saturday, March 20, 2010, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM. Vibraphonic ACOUSTIC LADYLAND

Music Tickets: 01392 495 370 The high energy punk-jazz quartet Acoustic Ladyland are showcasing tracks from their new album, to be released in May. Their sound is defined by the tenor sax of Pete Wareham. And what a noise – his playing is rough, squawky and vocalised and the band’s music has hints of 60’s avant-garde, Madness, Soft Machine and neglected 80’s US band Morphine, with frequent punk references. Oh, and they also include drummer Seb Rochford, the man with the biggest hair in music! Coming out of the London-based big band The F-IRE Collective, they also share members with the Mercury Music Prize-nominated outfit Polar Bear and were so named because they started out by re-working songs by Jimi Hendrix. They’ve since developed their own sound and to devastating effect. Saturday, March 20, 2010, 8:00 PM. Cavern Club.
