Casey Weston, a finalist on NBC’s hit show “The Voice” who hails from Southwest Florida, will headline a free event Saturday, Feb. 11 at Verandah, the 1,456-acre community located along a 1.75-mile stretch of the Orange River in Fort Myers.
Weston will perform in Verandah’s Oak Park during “The Real Deal: Tastes, Tours and Tunes” event from noon to 3 p.m. Members of the public are welcome and will tour model homes featuring Florida-inspired food and drinks, receive free gifts and register for prizes.
The tour culminates at Oak Park, where Weston will perform an outdoor concert as guests enjoy desserts from Verandah Club.
Verandah’s Oak Park showcases the community’s canopy of 100-year-old Live Oak trees and overlooks the 18th green of its Bob Cupp-designed Old Orange golf course, one of two championship courses at Verandah. The second, Whispering Oak, was designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II.

The popular “Recycled” Book Sale at the Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ will be open to the public every Sunday in February and March from 1:00-3:00pm. Anyone looking for a good read at bargain prices is welcome. Included in the sale will be gently used books, DVDs, CDs, puzzles, games, jewelry and small gift items. Fiction is arranged alphabetically by author, and non-fiction by subject. The church is located at 2050 Periwinkle Way (across the street from the Periwinkle Place Shopping Center). The sale is held in the “Rookery Bookery” on the ground level beyond the courtyard garden. Proceeds from the sale will benefit local non-profit agencies offering support for children and families.

History
A NEW in-depth, behind the scenes tour inside the historic Edison Botanic Research Laboratory. Participants will learn first hand from the curators and scientists who worked on the Lab restoration about the historic scientific work that was accomplished by Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone as well as interpretation of the chemical lab, processing area, machine shop and other related areas. The tour concludes at the original site of Edisons’ 1886 Electric Lab and participants will have access to the historic riverside estates. Edison Ford Members FREE, non members $40. Groups may schedule special times and dates in February and the tour will be available throughout the year with advance notice.

"Jesus Goes to the Oscars: Christ in Film" - February Theological Study
Education
Over the last hundred years Jesus Christ has been portrayed in a wide variety of ways in film. The first February offering, Jesus Goes to the Oscars: Christ in Film, will be held on three consecutive Wednesdays, February 1st-15th. Each week the class will explore one or more Hollywood depictions of Christ, including "bio-pics" like The Greatest Story Ever Told, musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, and more controversial films like The Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of the Christ. Identical sessions will be offered at 10:00AM and 7:00PM in Fellowship Hall, led by Senior Pastor John Danner. A second offering begins February 29th, as Pastor Danner presents a five-part study on interfaith relations called One God, Three Faiths: Jewish, Christian and Muslim Relations. The class will trace the history of the relationships among these faith communities which all claim a common ancestor in Abraham. The Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ will be marking the last Sunday before the Lenten season with two special celebrative services in the spirit of Mardi Gras. The services will be held at 9:00 and 11:00 AM on Transfiguration Sunday, February 19. Both services will feature the Blue Dirt Dixieland Jazz Band. “Throughout the history of the Christian church,” noted Senior Pastor John Danner, “the calendar has been marked by alternating times of celebration and contemplation. An Evening with CS Lewis by British Actor David Payne

British actor David Payne will perform An Evening with C.S. Lewis. This dramatic staged production is set in the year 1963, when famed British author C. S. Lewis was in the twilight of his life. Following a request from his great friend, J.R.R. Tolkien, Lewis agreed to give an informal talk to a group of American writers who were visiting England. They came to Lewis’ home, just outside of Oxford, to hear the man who had become a legend in his own lifetime. Despite his failing health, Lewis was in great form. His audience was spellbound as, with a display of oratory and humor that made him one of England’s most famous public speakers, he recounted the significant events and the people that shaped his life.

A NEW in-depth, behind the scenes tour inside the historic Edison Botanic Research Laboratory. Participants will learn first hand from the curators and scientists who worked on the Lab restoration about the historic scientific work that was accomplished by Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone as well as interpretation of the chemical lab, processing area, machine shop and other related areas. The tour concludes at the original site of Edisons’ 1886 Electric Lab and participants will have access to the historic riverside estates. Edison Ford Members FREE, non members $40. 3rd Annual Warbird Weekend at the Punta Gorda Airport in Punta Gorda, FL. The event will feature a Static Warbird Display and flyovers.
