Rockets – Make and Take

Build your own “rocket” launcher. You can then use the compressed air launcher in the classroom to engage students with the design of the rockets. Through modifications such as adding fins or altering the shape of the nose cone, students can theorise and then try out how a rocket’s flight path can be affected. The session will also involve a discussion of the usefulness of different models of electric current and the physics that can be used with the rocket launcher. Event Title: Rockets – Make and Take. Organised by: Institute of Physics. Requires registration: Yes. Engaging Girls in Physics Workshop

Girls are under-represented in physics post-16 across the UK.  For the last 20 years, only 20% of physics A-level students have been girls, despite about equal success between genders in GCSE physics and science.   In terms of choices, physics is the 19th most popular A-level subject for girls, but 4thmost popular for boys. Clearly there is something about physics, or how it is perceived, that discourages girls. We invite you to participate in the Engaging Girls in Physics workshop that will take place on Wednesday 12th June 2013 at Loreto College, Manchester.  Supported by The Ogden Trust and the Institute of Physics, this afternoon event aims to provide teachers with the opportunity to develop approaches and interventions to improve the participation of girls in physics. This workshop will present the recent findings on research on the under representation of girls in physics, explore teaching and learning strategies to make physics more attractive to girls and provide the opportunity for stimulating… Event Title: Engaging Girls in Physics Workshop.
