Time Reborn: From the Crisis of Physics to the Future of the Universe
London and South East Branch Calendar
The Institute of Physics is pleased to announce that it is hosting a talk by Lee Smolin to mark the publication of his new book, "Time Reborn: From the Crisis of Physics to the Future of the Universe".
In "Time Reborn" Smolin proposes that the laws of physics are not fixed, but that they evolve, in real time. This hypothesis opens up the possibility of resolving some of the open questions in physics today, such as the nature of the quantum world and its unification with spacetime and cosmology. Smolin places an emphasis on human agency and how our choices directly affect the range of possible outcomes for our future.

Talk University of Ulster at Jordanstown
Ireland Branch Calendar
Nowadays atmospheric pressure cold plasma technologies attract growing interest in the field of surface processing of materials since the absence of vacuum equipments is expected to result in several benefits such as the reduction of process and reactor costs, the employment of easy-to-handle apparatuses, and the easier integration into continuous production lines. Among the different electrical discharges which allow to establish non-thermal plasma conditions at atmospheric pressure, dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) can be considered one of the most popular approaches. The confident utilization of DBDs in surface treatment of materials strictly requires the knowledge of the most important aspects of their operational features which highly differentiate this approach from the well-established low pressure plasma technology. These and other aspects will be examined in this lecture along with some examples of the use of DBDs for the deposition of thin films. The investigation of the plasma-enhanced chemi…

The Rise and Fall of the Atomic Age: or How I learned to Start Worrying and Fear the atom!
London and South East Branch Calendar
The idea of radiation and nuclear power is very much out of fashion at the moment, but it wasn't always that way.
During the 1950s and 60s the public were more accepting of the idea of atomic power and dreamed up everything from atomic powered cars to
energy too cheap to meter.
Chris’s talk will track the rise of this golden age of the atom and its eventual fall, and will discuss if Nuclear power is something we should be really worried about.
Chris graduated from the University of Strathclyde in 2006 with an honours degree in Physics and for the last 5 years has worked in the Nuclear Industry in Safety and Science based roles.
This event is free but places may need to be reserved.

Next generation nuclear energy – the UK’s role
Energy Group Calendar
In the late 20th Century, the UK was a world-leader in the development of advanced nuclear fission reactor systems; these included several of what are now known as the “Generation IV” concepts. In recent years the UK has ceased to participate actively in this research beyond keeping a watching brief – a situation that has been recognised by the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology. There is an opportunity now to change this situation, and for UK expertise in nuclear science, engineering and technology to have a significant impact. This meeting draws together experts to review the current situation and discuss how the UK could re- engage in this field. The event will be chaired by Professor Richard Maudslay (Chairman of the National Nuclear Laboratory) and include a panel discussion session. Martin Freer (Birmingham): The Future of Nuclear Energy

Is fear of nuclear radiation scientifically justified? - A Fresh Look at the Effect of Radiation on Life
London and South East Branch Calendar
Ever since the Cold War, radiation has been held in awe and widely
considered dangerous.
But direct damage to health due to nuclear radiation is surprisingly low.
Wade Allison examines why this is so and what changes could be made to radiation safety standards that would reduce nuclear costs without any added risk.

Engaging Girls in Physics Workshop
Education Calendar
Girls are under-represented in physics post-16 across the UK. For the last 20 years, only 20% of physics A-level students have been girls, despite about equal success between genders in GCSE physics and science. In terms of choices, physics is the 19th most popular A-level subject for girls, but 4thmost popular for boys. Clearly there is something about physics, or how it is perceived, that discourages girls.
We invite you to participate in the Engaging Girls in Physics workshop that will take place on Wednesday 12th June 2013 at Loreto College, Manchester. Supported by The Ogden Trust and the Institute of Physics, this afternoon event aims to provide teachers with the opportunity to develop approaches and interventions to improve the participation of girls in physics.
This workshop will present the recent findings on research on the under representation of girls in physics, explore teaching and learning strategies to make physics more attractive to girls and provide the opportunity for stimulating…

Build your own “rocket” launcher. You can then use the compressed air launcher in the classroom to engage students with the design of the rockets. Through modifications such as adding fins or altering the shape of the nose cone, students can theorise and then try out how a rocket’s flight path can be affected.

Engineering Spookiness: entanglement, teleportation and the like
North East Branch Calendar
The well-travelled quantum engineers Alice and Bob arrive in Newcastle and experience the spooky world of quantum physics.
They experience “superposition” “entanglement” and “teleportation” – phenomena which, although weird, can be used in quantum engineering to do very useful tasks.
Dr Irene D’Amico will guide you through the strange situations that Alice and Bob encounter.
In the everyday world measurements may be made without change or harm to the subject. In the quantum world even the act of looking represents measurement and has a random and unalterable effect on the particles observed.
Particles in a quantum state are said to be entangled; each has multiple potential and measurement of one automatically fixes the state of the other.
The application possibilities of this include encryption and cryptanalysis, which have security implications. The act of eavesdropping, for example, alters or destroys what is being observed (useful to governments and the military, as well as for personal pri…
