Talk University of Ulster at Jordanstown
Ireland Branch Calendar
Nowadays atmospheric pressure cold plasma technologies attract growing interest in the field of surface processing of materials since the absence of vacuum equipments is expected to result in several benefits such as the reduction of process and reactor costs, the employment of easy-to-handle apparatuses, and the easier integration into continuous production lines. Among the different electrical discharges which allow to establish non-thermal plasma conditions at atmospheric pressure, dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) can be considered one of the most popular approaches. The confident utilization of DBDs in surface treatment of materials strictly requires the knowledge of the most important aspects of their operational features which highly differentiate this approach from the well-established low pressure plasma technology. These and other aspects will be examined in this lecture along with some examples of the use of DBDs for the deposition of thin films. The investigation of the plasma-enhanced chemi…

The Rise and Fall of the Atomic Age: or How I learned to Start Worrying and Fear the atom!
London and South East Branch Calendar
The idea of radiation and nuclear power is very much out of fashion at the moment, but it wasn't always that way.
During the 1950s and 60s the public were more accepting of the idea of atomic power and dreamed up everything from atomic powered cars to
energy too cheap to meter.
Chris’s talk will track the rise of this golden age of the atom and its eventual fall, and will discuss if Nuclear power is something we should be really worried about.
Chris graduated from the University of Strathclyde in 2006 with an honours degree in Physics and for the last 5 years has worked in the Nuclear Industry in Safety and Science based roles.
This event is free but places may need to be reserved.

Engineering Spookiness: entanglement, teleportation and the like
North East Branch Calendar
The well-travelled quantum engineers Alice and Bob arrive in Newcastle and experience the spooky world of quantum physics.
They experience “superposition” “entanglement” and “teleportation” – phenomena which, although weird, can be used in quantum engineering to do very useful tasks.
Dr Irene D’Amico will guide you through the strange situations that Alice and Bob encounter.
In the everyday world measurements may be made without change or harm to the subject. In the quantum world even the act of looking represents measurement and has a random and unalterable effect on the particles observed.
Particles in a quantum state are said to be entangled; each has multiple potential and measurement of one automatically fixes the state of the other.
The application possibilities of this include encryption and cryptanalysis, which have security implications. The act of eavesdropping, for example, alters or destroys what is being observed (useful to governments and the military, as well as for personal pri…

An insight into implant technologies used to overcome human disabilities and ailments
East Anglia Branch Calendar
The talk will reflect on the omnipresence of the various disciplines of science and engineering in medicine by focusing on applications in implantable devices.
Case studies will include the wonderful story of Julie Hill whose neural implant gave her control of her legs after a car accident had left her completely paralysed from the waist down.
Other interesting technologies include 3D scanning and facial reconstruction, instrumented bone prostheses that can grow with a child, and the ever more successful cochlear implants. Starting from real life examples, I will show how engineers and scientists can make tangible contributions to society and change lives.
The talk seeks to interest all bright students, no matter where their core strength lies, as the nature of our work is truly inter-disciplinary. It is a combination of skills that makes these amazing developments possible.
