It coincides with a worldwide commemoration known as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, denoting the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended with Germany signing the Armistice at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. A Blue Star Memorial Marker has been placed at the Barrington Area Civil War Enlistment Site, located at the intersection of Old Sutton and Dundee Roads in Barrington Hills. The Council of Barrington Garden Clubs and the Village of Barrington Hill's joint application was accepted for the marker by the National Garden Clubs. The program was established as a way to pay tribute to "All who have served, are serving and will serve."
