Seeing Songs
BostonYouthZone
Technology has rendered music more accessible and pervasive than ever before. MP3 players are omnipresent; every cell phone can make a statement about the owner's musical taste. Music is everywhere, and in the process has become both more public and more private. We all travel through life with our own soundtrack—sometimes others can hear it; sometimes it's ours alone.

"Seeing Songs" presents an eclectic mix of work—mainly from the Museum's collections—that draws on music as inspiration, focusing on abstract as well as representational art and connections to musical forms as varied as classical, jazz, and pop. From lyrical works on paper by Wassily Kandinsky and a painting by Stuart Davis that depicts music as gesture and improvisation, to recent videos by Gillian Wearing and Candice Breitz that explore the relationship between pop…

Artist Lecture: Tristan Lowe
Public Event
A life-sized sperm whale made of white felt, a bed that wets itself, a giant sci-fi Cyclops—Tristan Lowe’s (BFA ’90) sculptures delve into the abject and vulnerable, the childish and crude. Celebratory, critical, and self-deprecating, Lowe’s sculptures tap into social norms, fantasy worlds, underground culture, the carnival, and burlesque. Lowe has forthcoming solo exhibitions at Williams College Museum of Art, MA and RISD Museum of Art, RI. Join us to hear about the technologies that have earned Roble two Academy Awards: a 3-D tracking software that helps artists determine where to fit graphics into images that have been filmed, and a fluid simulation system used to create the watery wonders of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and The Day After Tomorrow. Seeing Songs

Visual artists, however, have been inspired by music throughout history. They have responded by transforming something that is arguably intangible, into visual, physical form.

From lyrical works on paper by Wassily Kandinsky and a painting by Stuart Davis that depicts music as gesture and improvisation, to recent videos by Gillian Wearing and Candice Breitz that explore the relationship between pop…

Visual artists, however, have been inspired by music throughout history. They have responded by transforming something that is arguably intangible, into visual, physical form.

Taken By Trees & El Perro Del Mar
Public Event
Taken by Trees is the solo project of Victoria Bergsman, former lead singer for the Concretes. For her most recent album, East of Eden, Bergman undertook a dramatic and transformative trip to Pakistan to collaborate and record with local folkloric musicians. The resulting songs, including a cover of Animal Collective’s “My Girls” (re-titled “My Boys”) blur preconceived notions of the traditional and contemporary.
Under the pseudonym El Perro del Mar, vocalist Sarah Assbring sings with a deep and meaningful longing. Her tender voice is underscored by shimmering pop and folk melodies, as documented on her most recent album Love is Not Pop, which features its own remarkable cover, an interpretation of Lou Reed’s “Heavenly Arms.”.
Cost: $15.00.
