Mosaic Quilt Project

Lower Mills In this mosaic workshop led by Betsy Rodman, participants will create individual and collaborative mosaic artworks. Drawing for Life: A Realistic Drawing Course for Older Adults

Central Library Drawing for Life is an interactive drawing class focused on drawing from observation. In addition to weekly featured artist discussions, students will be given the skills to master drawing realistically from observation. Led by teaching artist Kate Ledogar, projects will include still life drawings, self-portraits, a fully clothed model, and the architecture and scenes within the library. Out-of-school Time: Story Map Project

West Roxbury Elementary school aged children will write and illustrate their own story in this 90 minute workshop. The Story Map project is from the Emily Neuburger’s multiple award winning educational craft book, Show Me a Story. These detail rich depictions of imaginary lands are the perfect foundation for developing elaborate characters and stories. Emily Neuburger is an artist, teacher, FamilyFun magazine contributor, and freelance children’s craft designer. Throughout her teaching career, she’s been especially interested in how art informs writing. Author Talk with Christian Teja, appearing with Chip Tuttle

Central Library Suffolk Downs, part of Arcadia Publishing’s Images of Sports series, chronicles the rich history of Suffolk Downs from its construction and opening in 1935 to the present day through a collection of 200 images, many of which reside in the Boston Public Library. Built in an incredible 62 days, the facility was regarded as one of the world’s finest of its kind when it opened on July 10, 1935. Since then, Suffolk Downs has played host to some of Thoroughbred racing’s most famous horses, including Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Whirlaway, and Cigar. In addition to these legendary horses, Hall of Fame jockeys George Woolf and Jerry Bailey have all competed at the East Boston oval. Christian Teja is the Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Suffolk Downs. He joined the historic racetrack in 2001 as Director of Public and Media Relations and was named to his current position in 2007. Memories and Mortuary Records: Community Archiving Projects at UMass Boston

Central Library UMass Boston houses many archival collections that are utilized by family historians and researchers interested in exploring Boston and Massachusetts cultural history through the lives of individuals. The University’s collections include more than 4,000 stories and images in the “Mass. Memories Road Show” project, hundreds of case records from the Boston Female Asylum, and more than 30,000 mortuary records from the Massachusetts Catholic Association of Foresters between 1880 and 1940. Joanne Riley will share examples from these collections, and will discuss the fascinating, productive, and sometimes challenging interplay among individuals, communities, and institutional archives. Author Talk with Ted Reinstein

Central Library Ted Reinstein has been a reporter, producer, and occasional anchor for WCVB-TV Channel 5’s Chronicle, the nation’s longest running locally-produced nightly newsmagazine, since 1995. In 1995, Reinstein hosted the premiere season of the Discovery Channel's Popular Mechanics show. Out of the studio, he has explored Hawaii's volcanoes, the caves of Puerto Rico, and the islands of Tahiti as host for the Travel Channel's photo/adventure series, Freeze Frame. He also provides reports and commentary on Sunday mornings during WCVB’s On the Record, a program that addresses political issues of the week. Since 2004, he has written a weekly opinion column, “And Another Thing,” which appears on WCVB.com. In 2010, he was one of five national finalists in the Washington Post’s “Great American Pundit” opinion-writing competition. Temporary Closure for Building Improvements

Uphams Corner The municipal building that houses the Uphams Corner Branch of the Boston Public Library at 500 Columbia Road in Dorchester will undergo building improvements in May. The building improvements necessitate a temporary closure of the branch while work takes place. The temporary closure period will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013. Drawing for Life: A Realistic Drawing Course for Older Adults

Central Library Drawing for Life is an interactive drawing class focused on drawing from observation. In addition to weekly featured artist discussions, students will be given the skills to master drawing realistically from observation. Led by teaching artist Kate Ledogar, projects will include still life drawings, self-portraits, a fully clothed model, and the architecture and scenes within the library.
