Driving Our Dreams: Imagination in Motion

On April 13, Heritage Museums & Gardens opens for the season with its 2013 Special Exhibit “Driving Our Dreams: Imagination in Motion.” The exhibit, which is sponsored in part by Arbella Insurance Foundation, David and Melissa McGraw and Bonhams International Auctioneers, will pay homage to the great car concepts and designers who pushed the boundaries of automobile design and technology. It features sixteen of the most exceptional and historically-significant concept cars from across the nation. This is the first time this collection of unique cars, which hail from the country’s top automobile museums and private collections, has been displayed together. “Driving Our Dreams” will emphasize the design process behind great concepts of the past, like the Firebird II, and the cars of tomorrow, like the Terrafugia flying car. The exhibit provides an interactive exhibition for all ages and all interests, and will provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the glamorous and innovative world of automotive design.

The Art of the Catboat
A diverse medium expression of the elegant Catboat design.
The Catboat, an elegant display of craftsmanship and beauty, exemplifies the spirit of the American boat design. Joseph Keveney caught this spirit when he built three Catboat models from 1936-1942. Fortunately, his family has generously loaned his boat models to the Cape Cod Maritime Museum, thus becoming the catalyst for our new rotating exhibit, “The Art of the Catboat.” We invited Cape Cod artists to share a variety of unique perspectives, inspired by the Catboat, to display their artwork at the museum’s newest exhibit, scheduled to open for a “sneak peak” during the school vacation week of February 18th-22nd. On Saturday, May 25, between 10:00 a.m. - noon and 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. the newly renovated Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory located in the Rinehart Coastal Research Center, room 101, on the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s (WHOI) Quissett Campus, will host 10 hands-on demonstrations, videos, and poster displays, with something for all ages to share the excitement of fluid mechanics and oceanography. The experiments will be ‘simple’ yet exciting for a six-year-old child, a high school student, a graduate student, and the general public. Visitors to the Museum can tour the new exhibition, “There’s a War On: The Falmouth Home Front, 1941-1945” on display in the 1724 Conant House. HyArts Artist Shanties at Hyannis Harbor

Browse among the seven colorful shanties featuring Cape Cod artists who work and sell their wares right from their “seaside studios”. Artists and work varies each week and includes painting, jewelry, sculpture, glass, ceramics, mariner knot work, wood carving and more. One Woman Demonstration by Copley Master, Elizabeth Pratt

The Addison Art Gallery will hold an exhibition of new works by Copley Master Elizabeth Pratt from May 23 through June 15 with a reception on Saturday, May 25 from 5:30 to 7:30.
Pratt will also give one of her ever-popular watercolor demonstrations at the gallery, 43 Route 28 (South Orleans Road), Orleans, MA, on May 25 from 11:00 am to 12:30.
A full-time artist with a spontaneous style evolving as the images develop, Pratt keeps her work continually fresh and alive in a range of subject matter treated with new techniques. According to Pratt, "Most of the work for this show has been done on a new kind of paper which allows me the freedom to change course, wipe out an entire area, subtract as well as add subject matter or detail throughout the process. It also causes even more accidental effects than I used to encounter. These can enhance or suggest new ideas."

The Edward Gorey House is pleased to announce our 2013 special exhibit "Edward Gorey's Vinegar Works."
"Fifty years ago, in 1963, Edward Gorey published a trio of books in an olive-colored, hand-lettered slipcase entitled ‘The Vinegar Works: Three Volumes of Moral Instruction’. The three books were ‘The Insect God’ ‘The West Wing’ and ‘The Gashlycrumb Tinies’. All three books would eventually define Gorey’s style, and ‘The Gashlycrumb Tinies’ became his most enduring work. The Edward Gorey House, the author’s home-turned-museum in Yarmouth Port, will celebrate these three remarkable books, with exhibits containing original artwork and manuscripts. ‘The Vinegar Works’ will open April 18, 2013 and runs through December 29, 2013

Falmouth – Artwork by Jane Parhiala and her daughter, Kira Doutt, will be on display at the Maser Gallery at Falmouth Community Television from May 5 through May 30, 2013. The public is invited to the Opening Reception, Sunday, May 5, from 3:00 to 5:00PM.
Jane Parhiala is a fiber artist living in Falmouth. For over a decade she has been knitting and designing felted hats. Last year she began weaving on a Japanese Saori loom. Saori is a free style type of weaving which is taught at the Falmouth Art Center. “Weaving gives me the opportunity to explore a theme and then communicate it through color and texture,” Jane explains.
Her projects are inspired by her surroundings and are functional and fun.
Kira Doutt is a sophomore studying painting at Massachusetts college of art and design. She mainly works with oil paint but enjoys sculpture, papermaking, watercolor and printmaking on the side. The Addison Art Gallery will hold an exhibition of new works by Copley Master Elizabeth Pratt from May 23 through June 15 with a reception on Saturday, May 25 from 5:30 to 7:30.
Pratt will also give one of her ever-popular watercolor demonstrations at the gallery, 43 Route 28 (South Orleans Road), Orleans, MA, on May 25 from 11:00 am to 12:30.
A full-time artist with a spontaneous style evolving as the images develop, Pratt keeps her work continually fresh and alive in a range of subject matter treated with new techniques. According to Pratt, "Most of the work for this show has been done on a new kind of paper which allows me the freedom to change course, wipe out an entire area, subtract as well as add subject matter or detail throughout the process. It also causes even more accidental effects than I used to encounter. These can enhance or suggest new ideas."

Leatherback Sea Turtle Survival: A Caribbean Community's Crusade

Earth’s last warm-blooded monster reptile, the skin-covered, 1000-pound, leatherback turtle – the closest thing we have to a living dinosaur – was once headed for extinction. They were killed on their nesting beaches and their eggs dug up for food. In the course of filming the PBS documentary series Saving the Ocean, hosted by Carl Safina, television producer and cinematographer Daniel J. Lyons of Vermont Films traveled to Trinidad to witness first-hand the spectacular return of these ancient animals and the community leadership that is helping to keep this impressive pelagic species alive. In this presentation, Daniel will share the story of the leatherback and the crusade to end the slaughter on the beaches through spectacular film footage and behind-the-scenes details. Find out how the leatherbacks are faring today.
Sanctuary director Bob Prescott will introduce the talk with a slideshow of last summer's leatherback rescue in Truro.

Driving Our Dreams: Imagination in Motion

On April 13, Heritage Museums & Gardens opens for the season with its 2013 Special Exhibit “Driving Our Dreams: Imagination in Motion.” The exhibit, which is sponsored in part by Arbella Insurance Foundation, David and Melissa McGraw and Bonhams International Auctioneers, will pay homage to the great car concepts and designers who pushed the boundaries of automobile design and technology. It features sixteen of the most exceptional and historically-significant concept cars from across the nation. This is the first time this collection of unique cars, which hail from the country’s top automobile museums and private collections, has been displayed together. “Driving Our Dreams” will emphasize the design process behind great concepts of the past, like the Firebird II, and the cars of tomorrow, like the Terrafugia flying car. The exhibit provides an interactive exhibition for all ages and all interests, and will provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the glamorous and innovative world of automotive design.

The Art of the Catboat
A diverse medium expression of the elegant Catboat design.
The Catboat, an elegant display of craftsmanship and beauty, exemplifies the spirit of the American boat design. Joseph Keveney caught this spirit when he built three Catboat models from 1936-1942. Fortunately, his family has generously loaned his boat models to the Cape Cod Maritime Museum, thus becoming the catalyst for our new rotating exhibit, “The Art of the Catboat.” We invited Cape Cod artists to share a variety of unique perspectives, inspired by the Catboat, to display their artwork at the museum’s newest exhibit, scheduled to open for a “sneak peak” during the school vacation week of February 18th-22nd. Visitors to the Museum can tour the new exhibition, “There’s a War On: The Falmouth Home Front, 1941-1945” on display in the 1724 Conant House. Tours will be available of the 1790 Dr. Francis Wicks house, which shows how an affluent physician would have lived in the Federalist period. The Whaling Wives Gift Shop offers nautical and history-themed items as well as fun things for all ages. The rebuilt Hallett Barn Visitors’ Center has a new interactive space for kids and an exhibit on Falmouth’s whaling past. "Fifty years ago, in 1963, Edward Gorey published a trio of books in an olive-colored, hand-lettered slipcase entitled ‘The Vinegar Works: Three Volumes of Moral Instruction’. The three books were ‘The Insect God’ ‘The West Wing’ and ‘The Gashlycrumb Tinies’. All three books would eventually define Gorey’s style, and ‘The Gashlycrumb Tinies’ became his most enduring work. The Edward Gorey House, the author’s home-turned-museum in Yarmouth Port, will celebrate these three remarkable books, with exhibits containing original artwork and manuscripts. ‘The Vinegar Works’ will open April 18, 2013 and runs through December 29, 2013

Discover spawning horseshoe crabs on North Monomoy and become a horseshoe crab researcher! We will be watching this living fossil lay eggs on the beach, and counting their numbers. We’re sure to see a great variety of wildlife from tidal flats critters to migrating shorebirds.
This wildlife excursion begins with a 15-20 minute boat shuttle to North Monomoy Island, and involves moderate walking while we circumnavigate the island, covering up to 2 miles of beach and salt marsh. The group will remain with the naturalist for the entirety of the trip as there are several restricted areas on the island. Trip participants meet 30 minutes before the program at Veteran’s Field Road in Chatham (directions will be provided) for a Mass Audubon van shuttle to Outermost Harbor Marine where we will board a small vessel.

Falmouth – Artwork by Jane Parhiala and her daughter, Kira Doutt, will be on display at the Maser Gallery at Falmouth Community Television from May 5 through May 30, 2013. The public is invited to the Opening Reception, Sunday, May 5, from 3:00 to 5:00PM.
Jane Parhiala is a fiber artist living in Falmouth. For over a decade she has been knitting and designing felted hats. Last year she began weaving on a Japanese Saori loom. Saori is a free style type of weaving which is taught at the Falmouth Art Center. “Weaving gives me the opportunity to explore a theme and then communicate it through color and texture,” Jane explains.
Her projects are inspired by her surroundings and are functional and fun.
Kira Doutt is a sophomore studying painting at Massachusetts college of art and design. She mainly works with oil paint but enjoys sculpture, papermaking, watercolor and printmaking on the side. The Hidden Worlds of Freshwater and Salt Marsh Turtles

Author and naturalist Susan Baur swims with turtles in ponds from Falmouth to Orleans, and she has beautiful underwater video of turtles swimming, eating, fighting, and courting to prove it. Susan will share unique details of the life history of our local pond turtles, including the snapping turtle and the stinkpot turtle, and help us understand what we can do to conserve the freshwater turtles of Cape Cod.
Local resident and conservationist Bill Allan will introduce us to the threatened northern diamondback terrapin, the only turtle in North America that has adapted to living in the brackish water of the salt marsh. In 2002, the small population in Eastham seemed headed for local extinction, but through the protection of nests, turtle crossing signs, education, habitat improvement, and extraordinary community support, the population has started to recover. Bill will share rare video of a terrapin digging its nest and laying its eggs upland from the salt marsh, and explain how residents and visitors alike…
