"Our Kids" Summer Reading Group

Religious What kind of future do kids in America face? What role might Christians have in helping them flourish? These two questions and many others will be at the forefront of a summer reading group of Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis by Robert Putnam, a widely read sociologist of American culture (His previous books include Bowling Alone and American Grace) and a Harvard University Professor of Public Policy. The six-week discussion group will be led by Rev. David Avery and Rev. Dr. John Bennett. Writing about the book, David Gergen, the respected political analyst and adviser to many U.S. Presidents, has said, "Robert Putnam investigates how growing income gaps have shaped our children so differently. His conclusion is chilling: social mobility 'seems poised to plunge in the years ahead, shattering the American dream. Must reading from the White House to your house.'" "This Terrible Struggle for Life": The Civil War Letters of a Union Regimental Surgeon

Arts & Entertainment Edited by Civil War historian Dennis Belcher, This Terrible Struggle for Life offers a rare insight into the history of the Civil War in the Western theater through the eyes of a regimental surgeon. The newly graduated Dr. Thomas S. Hawley served in one of the premier fighting regiments of the Union Army, the 11th Missouri Volunteer Infantry. The collection of letters details his four-and-a-half-year career in the army through firsthand accounts of the various campaigns and his numerous duties. They also chronicle his interactions with captured Confederate soldiers, his encounters with pro-Southern and pro-Northern civilians in areas occupied by the Union Army, his experiences with freed slaves and numerous other daily events in the war. Notable among the letters is his record of the early Civil War in Missouri, the Vicksburg Campaign, the Battle of Tupelo and the Battle of Nashville.

Must reading from the White House to your house.'"
