Quilts of Valor Ceremony

Community Events Join us as we honor 14 WWII veterans with quilts of valor. Quilts of Valor was started simply by a mother in late 2003 when her son was developed to Iraq as a gunner on a Humvee. According to the bio of Catherine Roberts, the founder, she knew she would be "10 seconds from panic" while he was deployed. She had a vision of a post-deployed warrior struggling with his war demons at 2 in the morning. She saw him sitting on the side of his bed wrapped in a quilt that not only comforted him but warded off demons. Thus the Quilts of Valor Foundation was founded. The mission was simple: to cover all those wounded warriors with both physical and psychological wounds with a Quilt of Valor. The original focus was on warriors from Iraq and Afghanistan, however now veterans of all wars and conflicts are included. That first Quilt of Valor was sent to Walter Reed and awarded with the assistance of one the chaplains. Since then, more than 142,000 quilts have been awarded to veterans who have been touched by war from WWI… City: Jefferson City. Sunday, August 28, 2016, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM. Prison Break Race

Recreation Have you ever wondered what it’d be like to stand inside a real dungeon..? What about a dungeon underneath a 175-year-old abandoned prison? What would it be like to stand in a place where convicts sat for years at a time without daylight, running water or contact with the outside world? If you’ve ever thought about any of that, chances are pretty good you’ve thought about how you would escape from that prison. JC Outdoors is going to give you that opportunity. Racers will emerge from the prison’s dungeon, journey through Housing Unit 4 and set out on a 5+-mile course that will test every facet of their athleticism. Breaking out of prison isn’t easy, and this course won’t be easy either. We’ve combined the Capital City’s hilly terrain, one of its most revered structures and a slurry of obstacles to create the Prison Break. This one-of-a-kind experience will feature unexpected obstacles at every turn before ending with its refreshing conclusion. City: Jefferson City. Saturday, September 3, 2016, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Museum After Hours: The Trail of Tears in Missouri

Arts & Entertainment Between 1837 and 1839, 13 detachments of Cherokee traveled overland through Missouri after being forced from their homelands in the southeastern states. These groups took three routes through Missouri, giving us more miles of the Cherokee Trail of Tears than any other state. Take a virtual trip along the Trail of Tears as we look at the places and conditions along the state’s routes. Also, come early to learn more about the Missouri State Museum and our upcoming plans and goals. This is a great time to let us know your vision of the future for the museum and Jefferson Landing State Historic Site. The program continues the museum's ongoing series, "Museum After Hours," held the first Wednesday of each month.
