The Unknown Travels and Dubious Pursuits of William Clark

Community Events In 1798—more than five years before he led the epic western journey that would make him and Meriwether Lewis national heroes—William Clark set off by flatboat from his Louisville, Kentucky home with a cargo of tobacco and furs to sell downriver in Spanish New Orleans. He also carried with him a leather-trimmed journal used to record notes about his exploits. In The Unknown Travels and Dubious Pursuits of William Clark, a new book by author Jo Ann Trogdon, she reveals William Clark’s highly questionable activities during the years before his famous journey west of the Mississippi. Delving into the details of Clark’s diary and ledger entries from this period, Trogdon investigates evidence linking Clark to a series of plots, often called the Spanish Conspiracy, in which corrupt officials sought to line their pockets with Spanish money and separate Kentucky from the United States. Join us as Ms. Trogdon sheds new light on the complex life of one of our country’s most intriguing icons. City: Jefferson City. Additional Event Information: Free Admission. Kids/Family Friendly. Capitol Avenue's Convict Built Mansions

Community Events From the time the first convict was incarcerated in 1836 the Missouri State Penitentiary left its mark on the Capital City in innumerable ways. The fascinating stories of intrigue surrounding the construction of convict-built historic homes, in addition to the handed-down tales of the resident families, add to the legacy of our Capital. Prior to the opening of the penitentiary, many Cole County estate-homes were built by slaves. But when the penitentiary opened a ready supply of new cheap convict labor emerged to play a key role in the development of Jefferson City well into the early 1900s. Join Carolyn Bening for a look beyond the stone wall to the stately mansions of the city's Historic East (mainly along Capital Ave.). The elite hired the prominent architects of the day, such as Charles Opel, to design their homes but they were built by convict labor. The state utilized this source of "free labor" to generate revenue and make the prison self-sustaining. What could possibly go wrong? This event… City: Jefferson City. It Ends Here: The Last Missouri Vigilante

Community Events In early January 1904, a reporter from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch traveled to Oklahoma City to meet with washed-up relic of the Wild West, Edward Capehart O’Kelley. During their meeting, O’Kelley struggled to stay sober while discussing his relationship with the outlaw Jesse James, a childhood friend. He described how he once had an opportunity to join the James gang, but declined, opting instead for a career as a Colorado lawman. During his career, his violent tactics earned him the reputation of a man with a quick temper, ready gun and penchant for bending the law to suit his needs. It was there, in Creede, Colorado, that O’Kelley met Robert Ford, known to all as the assassin of Jesse James. Egged on by local miners, O’Kelley murdered Robert Ford to avenge the death of his old friend. In It Ends Here, author Joe Johnston draws on the reporter’s accounts to tell O’Kelley’s tragic story. Join us as he unravels this circular tale of frontier vigilantism and ponders America’s progress beyond such violence. City: Jefferson City. Additional Event Information: Free Admission. Organizations/Clubs Overview: This webinar will provide valuable guidance to regulated companies in development, implementation, or refinement of their manufacturing process verification and validation programs. It will evaluate validation practices that are more in agreement with ICH Q7 and Q8 than previously accepted validation methods, and will provide thought-provoking questions for FDA-regulated companies.
