XL Recordings’ Vampire Weekend has played Missoula twice before, both at The Badlander. Because of the band’s popularity and success of their first self-titled debut album, they’ve reached the level of the Historic Wilma Theatre. On Tuesday, January 12th, Vampire Weekend releases their second album, Contra.
Some bands stay in a holding pattern their whole careers. Others jerk the steering wheel hard and fly off the road. On their second album, Vampire Weekend does neither. Or maybe they do both. "I think we sound more like Vampire Weekend than we did on the first record," says drummer Christopher Tomson.

Marilyn Lysohir: Good Girls1968
Art/Culture
Artist Reception and Gallery Talk: March 5, 5-8 pm
Good Girls 1968 is an installation that consists of over 160 ceramic portraits of young women with whom Marilyn Lysohir graduated from high school. The installation involved reconnecting through hours on the phone with many of the girls captured in the portraits.
Lysohir is a renowned ceramicist and although Good Girls 1968 is grounded and created from one person's point of view, this exhibition transcends the personal and discovers its impact while touching the audience's cultural memory and reminiscences.
Lysohir lives and works in Moscow, ID, and has been an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Art at Washington State University and is co-owner of Cowgirl Chocolates. Kevin Red Star Exhibtion
Art/Culture
MAM is pleased to present Kevin Red Star, a celebrated artist in our region. Red Star draws from his Crow tradition and culture for his subjects, both historical and modern. He was born in 1943 and raised on the Crow Indian Nation in Lodge Grass, Montana. His family, heritage, and abundance of visual experience serve as his palette. He conjures evocative images of his ancestral Apsáalooke (Crow Nation) – its culture, and its history. Supported by nurturing and creative parents, Red Star was a gifted young artist. In 1962 he was invited to join the inaugural class of 150 students from 80 tribes nationwide at the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) in Sante Fe, NM. The founding of the IAIA was visionary. The institution hoped to offer an environment where young people from reservations across the country would gain access to state of the art resources and instruction. At the IAIA, Red Star explored the images of his own Crow people and was exposed to the visual imagery generated by artists from across the c…

She has exhibited throughout the United States and has been an Artist in Residence and Visiting Artist at the Kohler Foundation, Kansas City Art Institute, and Kent State University.

She has exhibited throughout the United States and has been an Artist in Residence and Visiting Artist at the Kohler Foundation, Kansas City Art Institute, and Kent State University.

Griff Williams: It Is Not Down in Any Map; True Places Never Are
Art/Culture
MAM is pleased to host a homecoming for this native Montana artist. The recently created enamel and resin paintings present an elaborate blend of visual references, using the landscape as the foundation for his pictorial space. The imagery alludes to the glorified natural landscapes depicted in turn of the century photographic postcards. In a process oriented approach, representations of these landmarks are abstracted and distilled into essential areas of color.
Art in the American West has a rich tradition informed by the landscape. Williams plays off of the tradition established as a consequence of European influence on American art. From the Hudson River School painters such as Thomas Cole and Thomas Doughty to the Western painters C.M. Russell and Frederick Remington, artists have attempted to put down on canvas their romantic interpretations of nature and their visions of a vanishing frontier. However, Williams departs from these traditions, and his attention to craftsmanship and editorial abstraction…
