Paul Harris : The Shut-In Suite
Art/Culture
Paul Harris, born in 1925 in Orlando, FL, is best known as a sculptor and throughout his career he has employed almost every sculptural medium and process. From his plaster explorations of the human form while in graduate school in New Mexico in the late 1940's, to his thought-provoking and ephemeral experimental works of the 1950's utilizing plaster, papier-mache and string, to his marriage of high art and domestic craft in the stuffed and stitched cloth sculptures of the 1960's, Harris' aesthetic remains one of constant exploration. His drawings and prints act in the same manner as his sculptures: background meshes freely with subject, each part functioning as both formal and narrative elements resulting in a solid look at simple relationships, where everything boldly stands for itself.
In 1969, Harris received a fellowship from the Tamarind Institute of Lithography in Los Angeles and while there created the Shut-in Suite. Harris states, "I lived alone in a rundown LA apartment amidst my own disorder. I…

Roger Shimomura: Minidoka on My Mind
Art/Culture
Roger Shimomura's paintings and prints, including this series, Minidoka on My Mind, address social and political issues of Asian America, and have most often been inspired by diaries kept by his late immigrant grandmother that span the 56 years of her life. Minidoka on My Mind is the fourth major painting series generated by Shimomura based on his World War II internment experience.

Scott Fife: Big Trouble - The Idaho Project
Art/Culture
Artist Scott Fife has long been obsessed with the
historic characters that helped shape the time we live in; characters
that have often fallen into the dark recesses of history. Through his
re-creations, Fife offers us a renewed perspective reminding us of the
famous quote by George Santayana, "Those who cannot remember the past
are condemned to repeat it."
One such historic event with national impact, and the focus of this
exhibition, was the assassination of Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg in
1905. The murder occurred in Caldwell, ID, and the subsequent trial in
1907 was held in Boise, ID. Although this tragic drama was played out
over a century ago, its relevance today must not be understated. The
story of a small town in a small state, thrust into a national spotlight
as a consequence of unrest associated with the extractive industries, is
not lost on a Montana audience. Montanans too, have a long history that
has borne witness to the consequences of labor's upheaval and industry's
selfi…

Teresa Tamura - Made in Minidoka: The Incarceration of Japanese Americans in Idaho
Art/Culture
This exhibition features a selection of photographs from
the larger body of work Tamura has generated over the past decade.
Tamura, the daughter of second generation Japanese Americans, was born and raised in Nampa, Idaho, a small town just a two hour drive from the remnants of the Minidoka Relocation Center. Though growing up in Idaho, in such close proximity, she was never told of the internment camp; first learning of Minidoka in 1978, in journalism school, at Idaho State University.
In 2001, Tamura heard artist Roger Shimomura lecture about his paintings based on the journals his grandmother kept while interned at Minidoka. Tamura, like Shimomura, was inspired to depict a sense of the place and the life of internment at Minidoka. Her images, captured on black and white infrared film, accentuate the stark landscape and architectural remains of the camp while lending a timeless quality to the photographs. The present day portraits of internees are honest and human. Tamura's eye for composition, honed o…

Winter Wildlife Season at the National Bison Range
Glacier Country
With the weather change from the heat of summer to the crisp cold of winter, wildlife behavior also changes. One no longer needs to be up at the crack of dawn to catch sight of deer or elk. Except during storms, animals will be up and about at any time throughout the short winter days. So it is a great time to visit your favorite National Wildlife Refuge, such as the National Bison Range in Moiese.
The Refuge is open daily, from 7 a.m. to dark, which can come as early at 5 p.m. during the middle of winter. The Winter Drive provides a 10-mile round trip along a gravel road and it is open daily, weather and road conditions permitting, of course. This route offers wildlife viewing opportunities for bison, white-tail deer, elk, pronghorn antelope and bald eagle along Mission Creek and in Alexander Basin. There are spectacular views of the Mission Mountains from the Basin. Visitors may also take the shorter West Loop Drive and find deer, pronghorn or other wildlife. We suggest people give themselves about an ho…

Join the folks at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula on Sunday, November 22, from 1:00 to 4:00 for the free opening reception for the Museum’s holiday exhibit: All Dolled Up for the Holidays.

The exhibit will run November 22, 2009 - January 3, 2010 and will feature a fine dollhouse from the Museum’s permanent collections, as well as some old favorites like Raggedy Ann and Andy and “Rosemary.” With so many dolls to display, this year’s holiday exhibit will expand beyond the Orientation Gallery (and appearances in other permanent exhibits) to include the entire upstairs exhibit as well. This dramatic increase in exhibition space will make it possible for staff to exhibit new acquisitions, such as the “Nancy Dolls” from the Teri Nelles Collection, as well as pieces from the Irene Paeth, Ma…

"All Dolled Up for the Holidays"
Historical Museum at Fort Missoula
Join the folks at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula on Sunday, November 22, from 1:00 to 4:00 for the free opening reception for the Museum’s holiday exhibit: All Dolled Up for the Holidays.
The season just wouldn’t be complete without a special exhibit at the Historical Museum, so in true holiday spirit the Museum will have a doll extravaganza guest-curated that will be a new adventure in fun and frolic.

Free Business Building Workshops for Service Providers
Education
Are you running a service-oriented small business?
Do you need more customers?
Do you find yourself putting up with rude, pushy or needy clients that zap your energy just so that you can make enough money to pay the bills?
If that resonates with you, just imagine attracting new clients that you look forward to working with each day because they’re more fun, and they re-kindle the passion that caused you to start your business in the first place. They are just a better “fit” for you. If you’re going to keep busting your butt at it, you might as well be doing it with clients that are a joy to work with and appreciate your efforts, huh?
Beyond just getting new clients and making more money, you want to fill your practice with "ideal" and "fun" clients... plenty of them... customers that energize and re-invigorate your passions and inspire you to do your best work and remind you of the reasons you started doing what you do in the first place. Live a more balanced and healthy life with high energy levels an…

Historical Museum at Fort Missoula
Join the folks at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula on Sunday, November 22, from 1:00 to 4:00 for the free opening reception for the Museum’s holiday exhibit: All Dolled Up for the Holidays.

With the weather change from the heat of summer to the crisp cold of winter, wildlife behavior also changes. One no longer needs to be up at the crack of dawn to catch sight of deer or elk.
