Sailor Tattooing

Arts & Festivals One of the greatest traditions in the art of tattooing is the military design -- especially those of the Navy! This tradition began before the 1700's when Captain Cook discovered the tattooed natives of the South Pacific. Tattooing has been linked with the seafaring lives of the navies of the world for centuries. Cook's sailors were looking for the perfect souvenirs of their journey into foreign lands, and tattooing was the most exotic. This exhibition will show sailor tattooing from around the world.
