Dillon Brothers Harley-Davidson's Poker Run Saturday May 17 to benefit children with cancer

Community Events/Fundraisers Children with cancer will benefit from a poker run Saturday, May 17, during the Dillon Brothers Harley-Davidson's 6th Annual Maiden Voyage Poker Run to be held Saturday, May 17. Proceeds from the poker run will benefit Camp Quality Heartland, a non-profit, volunteer organization that provides free summer camping experiences and other year-round programs for children with cancer and their siblings, ages three to 18. A number of faculty and staff from The Nebraska Medical Center & UNMC are volunteers in the organization. The Poker Run will begin at noon at the Dillon Brothers Harley-Davidson store at 174th St. & Maple Rd. and will finish with food and refreshments at a local restaurant where prizes for top three poker hands will be awarded. Register at Dillon’s before the event, or on the date of the event from 10:30 a.m. noon. Cost of the event is $15 for riders and $10 for passengers. Andrew Pawlak's Never Lose Day

Kids/Family At 17 years old, Andrew was diagnosed with Wegeners Granulomatosis, an uncommon condition that causes inflammation of the blood vessels. This inflammation damages vital organs and in serious conditions can cause those organs to fail. Unfortunately, his kidneys failed which led him to be on dialysis for 3 days/week (4 hours/day), for two years. Last summer, he was able to start home dialysis; still a tiring 6 days/week, but only for two hours, allowing him more time for friends and family. It seemed as if things were working out After not feeling well for a few days, Andrew's mom took him to the hospital on January 31, 2008. Initially they thought it was probably just the flu because Andrew's immune system was not the best. The doctors found Andrew had a staph infection in the port in his arm. The best thing, they decided, would be to change the port the following Saturday. It was something they had done before, being seen as a routine surgery.
