Conor Peterson presents Vector Field

3- Art Shows & Fairs In conjunction with Currents 2013, Albuquerque-based artist Conor Peterson presents Vector Field, a mysterious sound-and-light sculptural installation invokes the darker secrets of the universe. In the context of Currents, Peterson sees Vector Field as an opportunity to question the interactive nature of technology-driven art. For the fourth year, Currents will bring together the work of established, unrecognized and emerging New Media artists, from New Mexico, the US and the world, for events showcasing interactive and fine art video installations, multimedia performances and web based art forms. In a Broken Tongue

3- Art Shows & Fairs Nuart Gallery is pleased to present In a Broken Tongue, a solo exhibition of new paintings by the artist Cecil Touchon. The exhibition will run May 24 through June 9, 2013, with an opening reception on Friday, May 24th from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. The artist will be present. Luminous Grace - New Paintings

3- Art Shows & Fairs In Jennifer J.L. Jones' abstract expressionist take on the world, there is beauty all around, even in the darker places that awaken our sense of danger. Her newest series, “Luminous Grace,” expands her vision of nature-as- teacher to bring us a fearless exploration of life's deepest mysteries. While her technique remains the same—layers of paint and other media burnished to an otherworldly glow—this series projects a bolder, more authoritative tone even as it soothes and comforts with its ethereal beauty. “These paintings are a little different energetically,” says Jones. “I've started them with larger gestures, bigger brush strokes, and I'm playing more with the colors. With this series I felt open and fearless.” Drawing inspiration from her travels as well as from elements of nature glimpsed through her studio windows, Jones plumbs the depths of light and beauty, interpreting them through her own unique vision and paying attention to the ephemeral moments that underscore the importance of mindfulne… Venue: Hunter Kirkland Contemporary. Ruth Duckworth (1919—2009) THE MAQUETTES

3- Art Shows & Fairs Ruth Duckworth was born in Germany in 1919, where, as a young woman of Jewish descent during the Nazi regime, she was not permitted to attend art school. Thankfully, she moved to England for art school where she discovered her great passion: sculpting abstracted line and form with clay. Early on, Duckworth exercised an independent mind by using a medium that was not recognized within the pantheon of “high art.” In doing so, she pioneered a new way of thinking about ceramics and the formalism of pure abstraction. Clearly influenced by the Romanian modernist sculptor Constantin Brancusi, as well as deeply moved by the ancient art of the Cycladic culture that preceded that of classical Greece, Duckworth developed her own abstractly elegant language. As Harmony Hammond noted in her review in Art in America (November 2010), “There is no clutter, no sentimentality or nostalgia…. The work … is deceptively simple. Had she sculpted primarily in a medium other than clay, Duckworth would have undoubtedly received greate… Venue: Bellas Artes Gallery. Region: Santa Fe. Canyon Road. Ongoing Event: Yes. "Filigree and Finery: The Art of Spanish Elegance"

4- Museum Events …at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, 750 Camino Lejo On Museum Hill, Santa Fe, NM  87505, 505-982-2226.  10:00AM-5:00PM Daily (PLEASE NOTE THE MUSEUM IS CLOSED MONDAYS FROM LABOR DAY TO MEMORIAL DAY.) Although Europeans often looked down upon the colonial settlers of the Americas, criticizing their lifestyle and comportment, they could not so easily dismiss their adornment. For here in the Spanish colonies, the colonists wore their wealth.  Despite laws concerning the use and wearing of luxuries, the Spanish colonists bedecked themselves, using precious metals in personal decoration for pageantry and a show of power. The jewelry rivaled that of Europe, and from the dexterous hands of indigenous weavers using new materials and dyes came sumptuous garments of silk and velvet. Venue: Museum of Spanish Colonial Art. Region: Santa Fe. Ongoing Event: Yes. Friday, May 24, 2013. For more info visit www.spanishcolonialblog.org.

Cowboys Real and Imagined

4- Museum Events When America needed hard workers, the cowboy was there. The job was dirty and difficult, low-paid and lowly regarded. But when an America torn by the Civil War needed a hero to unite its soul, the unassuming cowboy was an unlikely—and ultimately lasting—pick. Since riding out of Spanish horse culture, he’s been an itinerant hired hand, an outlaw, a movie star, a rodeo athlete, a radio yodeler, and a rhinestoned disco diva. He’s been Spanish, Mexican, African American, Anglo, male, female, straight, and gay. His image has been co-opted to sell trucks, beer, boots, beans, jeans, tires, cigarettes, leather couches, presidential candidates, and a lifestyle far beyond the means of real-life buckaroos. Despite the sometimes tortured lengths our imaginations have taken cowboys and cowgirls, the basic fact of their life is this: a rough-hewn job stacked against steep odds. The daily dangers of working with cattle and horses are matched by volatile global markets, a public with fickle tastes in heroes, and a big… Venue: New Mexico History Museum. Region: Santa Fe. It's About Time: 14,000 Years of Art in New Mexico

4- Museum Events New Mexicans have always made art—we have always made aestheticized objects that reflect our world views. From beautifully made, 14,000-year-old Paleo-Indian tools to contemporary imagery, New Mexico art has reflected our changing technologies, embodied our ways of making a living, and personified our spirituality. And where else but New Mexico has art reflected everything from the creators of stone tools to the invention of the atomic bomb? Curated by Joseph Traugott, Ph.D. the museum’s curator of twentieth century art, the exhibition begins with the earliest yet-discovered art—Clovis points—and proceeds in an unbroken continuum to the present. For almost four decades, Clift has photographed two monolithic sites that dominate their expansive landscapes: Shiprock, an eroded volcanic form that rises above the northwestern New Mexico desert and is sacred to the Navajo (Diné), and Mont St. Michel, a tidal island off the north coast of France that is famous for its Romanesque-Gothic church and monastery. In this selection of more than seventy beautiful photographs, Clift shares his ongoing, nuanced exploration of the two places. Venue: New Mexico Museum of Art. Region: Santa Fe. Downtown Santa Fe. Although Europeans often looked down upon the colonial settlers of the Americas, criticizing their lifestyle and comportment, they could not so easily dismiss their adornment.

In this selection of more than seventy beautiful photographs, Clift shares his ongoing, nuanced exploration of the two places. Venue: New Mexico Museum of Art. Region: Santa Fe. Downtown Santa Fe.

In this selection of more than seventy beautiful photographs, Clift shares his ongoing, nuanced exploration of the two places. Venue: New Mexico Museum of Art. Region: Santa Fe. Downtown Santa Fe. The Hank Williams Tribute with Cathy Faber's Swingin' Country Band

2- Entertainment & Nightlife The Hank Williams Tribute Brunch with Cathy Faber’s Swingin’ Country Band - In a short career that spanned only from 1946 to 1952, Hank Williams was widely considered country music’s first superstar. He was instrumental in turning “hillbilly” music into “country” music, and his songs are still covered by major recording artists and widely enjoyed 60 years after his death. Cathy Faber’s Swingin’ Country Band is happy to be playing songs written and covered by the late Hank Williams every Sunday afternoon in May. Cathy will take on the role of “Henrietta” Williams and sing lead vocals while playing upright bass, accompanied by George Langston on guitar, Dave Devlin on steel, Pat Mahoney on fiddle, and Chris Carpenter on drums.

In this selection of more than seventy beautiful photographs, Clift shares his ongoing, nuanced exploration of the two places. Venue: New Mexico Museum of Art. Region: Santa Fe. Downtown Santa Fe. Playing [Hunting] Games

6- Family Activities Class Details: Perhaps you believe or have heard that playing tug with your dog might make him/her aggressive or even a predator. It’s also an efficient way of physically and mentally exercising him/her as well as the ability to use a highly reinforcing behavior for your dog as part of your recall (come when called) strategy. Prerequisite: No prior training required, but dogs must be able to work safely around other people and dogs: no barking, growling or lunging at people or dogs. Dogs should be able to stay comfortably inside a crate/supervised and tied-down for short period of time during class. Proof of rabies and distemper or current titer–test. Joy Kills Sorrow

2- Entertainment & Nightlife Joy Kills Sorrow's sound is a mix of time-honored timbres of the American tradition and the indie rock and new folk its young members grew up on. While the former has made Joy Kills Sorrow proven favorites on the bluegrass circuit, the latter has allowed them to reach audiences more attuned to Mumford & Sons and Fleet Foxes than The Stanley Brothers. Their name comes from the ’30s radio station where the Monroe Brothers performed (WJKS-Where Joy Kills Sorrow). The Boston-based group brings together musicians who each have classical and/or jazz conservatory training, but choose to play a contemporary take on music of the heartland, driven by beautiful string arrangements. Singer Emma Beaton was nominated for Traditional Vocalist of the Year at the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Awards. Guitarist and luthier Matthew Arcara is a Winfield National Flatpicking Champion.

Information: 505-476-5072 or visit www.nmartmuseum.org. Venue: New Mexico Museum of Art. Region: Santa Fe. Downtown Santa Fe. Ongoing Event: Yes. Thursday, May 30, 2013.

In this selection of more than seventy beautiful photographs, Clift shares his ongoing, nuanced exploration of the two places. Venue: New Mexico Museum of Art. Region: Santa Fe. Downtown Santa Fe. Fay Ku: Asa Nisa Masa

3- Art Shows & Fairs Eight Modern is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, Fay Ku: Asa Nisa Masa. Ku stages mythic tableaus of transformation and tension performed by young women (and the occasional boy). The refinement and subtlety of Ku’s technique offer an arresting contrast to the raw psychological charge of the scenes she depicts. Ku is inspired by what she calls the “residues” of human culture. “Problematic relationships and issues of socialization are central themes in my work: stories, myths and things witnessed inspire me,” Ku says. “I never have any preconceived notion of what the work will look like, and I never sketch beforehand. I work to discover what I am thinking, and I have to find my way to the image.” Working from her imagination, Ku starts by drawing a face, then adds and erases until her ideas coalesce on paper. “I grew up in two cultures as the child of Chinese immigrants raised in all-white American suburbs,” Ku says. “The intersection of the personal, social and cultural is where my work… Venue: Eight Modern.
