Speak Truth To Power - Human Rights Defenders Who Are Changing Our World

Exhibits & Galleries The museum’s special exhibit, Speak Truth To Power, explores the issue of human rights through a collection of 50 large, emotional portraits of people from around the world who have stood up against injustice. These beautiful portraits, created by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Eddie Adams in 2000, bring us face to face with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel, the Dalai Lama, Marian Wright Edelman, and other inspiring human rights defenders. The exhibition can be appreciated on a number of levels. Adams’ photographs are stunning works of art in their own right, the stories of the human rights defenders, compiled by RFK Center founder Kerry Kennedy, have the power to inspire action, and the parallels that can be drawn between the important issues of the 1960s and the continuing abuses of individual rights can enlighten us as to the work that still needs to be done. Weekly opinion topics give exhibition guests an opportunity to participate in a public discussion about issues that affect us all.… Region: Sullivan. Cost: Included in regular museum admission; $5 for Special Exhibit only. Phone: 866-781-2922. Venue website: www.bethelwoodscenter.org. Tuesday, September 16, 2014, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Joanne Howard: Dream House

Exhibits & Galleries Edward Hopper House is pleased to present Dream House, a new mixed media installation by Joanne Howard. This exhibition explores the relationship between positive and negative space through a variety of media, including ceramic sculpture and drawing. The interior of the Edward Hopper House never loses its original identity as a domestic space, and, by highlighting the negative areas around the objects and in the drawings, Howard encourages visitors to consider the “spiritual space” left behind in this, Edward Hopper’s boyhood home. Opening reception: 5-8 p.m. Sept. 5. Region: Rockland. Phone: 845-358-0774. Tuesday, September 16, 2014, 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Edward Hopper House Art Center, 82 N. Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960.

Mark Attebery: Twist and Shout – Sculpture in the Garden

Exhibits & Galleries Sculpture returns to the garden of the Edward Hopper House this summer with the installation of new work by multi-media artist Mark Attebery. Inspired by biological sources and the graceful naturalism of the material, the forged and welded steel sculpture, entitled Twist and Shout, reveals Attebery’s interest in exploring slow growth, the world beneath surface skins and life energy coursing through metal. Region: Rockland. Tuesday, September 16, 2014, 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. 82 N. Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960.

Viviane Silvera: Therapy Series

Exhibits & Galleries Edward Hopper House presents the work of Viviane Silvera in the Hopper Hallway. Inspired by scenes from film and television, Silvera explores the world of psychotherapy, focusing on themes found in Hopper’s works such as solitude, alienation, and dream-like evocations. Her figures are abstracted in an often-monochromatic palette, transforming the specific into the archetypal, leaving - as in a Hopper painting - an ambiguous narrative that’s up to the viewer to imagine. Opening reception: 5-8 p.m. Sept. 5. Region: Rockland. Phone: 845-358-0774. Tuesday, September 16, 2014, 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Edward Hopper House Art Center, 82 N. Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960.

Wednesday, September 17, 2014, 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

Wednesday, September 17, 2014, 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

Wednesday, September 17, 2014, 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Edward Hopper House Art Center, 82 N. Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960.

Thursday, September 18, 2014, 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Edward Hopper House Art Center, 82 N. Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960.

Thursday, September 18, 2014, 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Edward Hopper House Art Center, 82 N. Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960.
