local historian Frank Salvati speaks about “The Infamous Walking Purchase of 1737"

History/genealogical William Penn’s sons, John and Thomas Penn, claimed a deed dating from the 1680s was procured from the Delaware Indians for an area that covered as much land as a man could walk in a day.  As a result of highly deceptive circumstances surrounding the deed, a highly fraudulent treaty was forced upon the Delaware by the province of Pennsylvania, working hand in hand with the Iroquois allies.  The resulting deception resulted in the expulsion of the Delaware from their homeland.  A few years later, the Delaware reaped a terrible revenge during the French and Indian War.  Light refreshments will be served. Frank Salvati lives in Port Jervis and studies  the Indian wars, with a particular interest in the Northeastern United States. Call 754-8870, email at nvam@frontiernet.net or visit our Facebook page at facebook.com/pages/The-Neversink-Valley-Museum-of-History-Innovation.
