“Polymers incorporating N-alkyl urea peptoids: Self-assembled aggregates, step-growth polymers and polymer conjugates”
Seminars
Professor Neil Ayres
Department of Chemistry
The University of Cincinnati
will speak on
“Polymers incorporating N-alkyl urea peptoids: Self-assembled aggregates, step-growth polymers and polymer conjugates.”
Abstract: N-alkyl urea peptoids are oligomeric biomimetic molecules that can be thought of as hybrids between oligoureas, N-acyl glycines (peptoids) and 2-γ peptides. By virtue of their iterative synthesis strategy a wide variety of functional side chains can be incorporated and the urea functionality facilitates hydrogen bonding leading to self-assembly properties. This presentation will detail the use of N-alkyl urea peptoids as functional oligomers for conjugation to controlled molecular weight polymers, as monomers for step growth polymerization leading to molecular brushes, and their ability to form self-assembled fibers. The controlled polymers are prepared using reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, allowing the formation of block copolymers comprising…

"The Iroquois Confederacy: America's First Democracy?"
Community Events
The Iroquois Confederacy: America's First Democracy?
In the western tradition ancient Greece is famed as the birthplace of democracy. But several sources, not to mention the Iroquois themselves, point to their Confederacy and its Great Law as a "home grown" democracy. And Ben Franklin agreed with them.
Join Susan Stebbins, SUNY Potsdam Professor of Anthropology, as she discusses archaeological and ethnographic information about the Iroquois in the area, Ontario, and Quebec, their cultural traditions, and the impact of the Confederacy on the relations between the Iroquois and the establishment of the United States.

Memory Circuit Elements: Properties and Applications
Prof. Yuriy V. Pershin
Department of Physics and Astronomy
University of South Carolina
Abstract: I will start with considering spin memory effects in semiconductors. In particular, when current flows through a semiconductor/ferromagnet junction, the device resistance acquires memory since it depends on the state and history of the system. I will thus demonstrate that certain semiconductor spintronics devices belong to a broad class of memory circuit elements including memory resistive (memristive), memory capacitive (memcapacitive) and memory inductive (meminductive) systems. Recently, a number of experimental structures exhibiting memory properties have been identified showing that these memory circuit elements can offer completely new functionalities for both information processing and analog electronics. "American Uprising," author Dan Rasmussen to speak at Clarkson
SPECTRUM
American Uprising is the untold story of America’s largest slave revolt. American Uprising is the riveting and long-neglected story of this elaborate plot, the rebel army’s dramatic march on the city and its shocking conclusion. No North American slave revolt—not Gabriel Prosser, not Denmark Vesey, not Nat Turner—has rivaled the scale of this rebellion either in terms of the number of the slaves involved or in terms of the number who were killed.
Through groundbreaking original research, Daniel Rasmussen offers a window into the young expansionist country, illuminating the early history of New Orleans and providing new insight into the path to the Civil War, and the slave revolutionaries who fought and died while standing up against injustice. This book represents a significant contribution to African American history and the struggle for civil rights in this country.
At Harvard, Rasmussen focused on studying slavery and the American South. He won the History and Literature sophomore essay prize for hi…

The Puzzle of Left-Handedness: Separating Fact from Fiction
For centuries, myths about left-handedness have abounded. Left-handers have often been viewed with suspicion, faced prejudice and discrimination -- the very word "left" in English derives from the
Anglo-Saxon "lyft" meaning "broken" or "weak."
Join St. Lawrence University Psychology Professor, Alan Searleman, an experienced researcher in the field, for demonstrations and a lively discussion of handedness, including sighting eye dominance, and how hand and eye preferences can have a major impact on our ability to play various sports.

SPECTRUM
At the age of 17, Angela Rose was abducted at knifepoint outside a suburban shopping mall and assaulted by a repeat sex-offender who was on parole for murder. After being released by her attacker, she then suffered at the hands of authorities who subjected her to blame and additional victimization.
While a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Angela began to understand how silence cloaks the prevalence of sexual assault. Instead of retreating in the face of adversity, Angela rose to the challenge of voicing what is often left unsaid. He’s working with a number of different LGBTQ rights groups in a consulting role and continues to work on protecting and advancing those rights at home in Iowa.
Zach is also currently the program coordinator for the Iowa City chapter of Summer of Solutions. You can keep track of the work he’s doing by visiting their website: http://www.iowacitysos.org/
