Remington College Cleveland Campus Holds 3 Lives Blood Drive

Submitted Remington College is urging people in the Cleveland area to donate blood at its upcoming 3 Lives blood drive, a national effort to recruit minority blood donors and help supply local hospitals with blood. The effort has resulted in more than 12,000 pints of blood collected since the program began - that's enough blood to save more than 36,000 lives! Why focus on minority blood donors? According to the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, African American donors provide blood with unique antigens that are vital for people with sickle cell disease - which affects 70,000 people in the U.S. - as well as patients with other blood disorders. While the focus of 3 Lives is to highlight the need for minority blood donors, everyone is encouraged to give blood at the event; anyone 17 years or older and 110 pounds can donate blood. Please help the cause and donate blood on Thursday, January 29 from 10 am – 2pm. All the blood collected will be used to help people in the Cleveland area. Science Café Cleveland presents “Breaking Ice for Wind Energy in Lake Erie”

Submitted Lake Erie has great potential for wind energy. A large wind farm in the lake will have many advantages: away from residential areas, occupying no land, near utility infrastructures and major consumers in Northeast Ohio, etc. However, it also faces a number of challenges such as cost, finance, and technology. One of the main technical challenges is to find an economical solution to the ice load that will act on the foundations. At CWRU, research funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) is being conducted to evaluate the feasibility of a new type of foundation that can support the ice load while keeping the cost low. Join us in discussion of this and other issues related to a wind farm in the lake at this month's café featuring David Zeng, Frank H. Neff Professor and Chair, Department of Civil Engineering, CWRU. Doors will be open 5:30 - 9:00 PM. Discussion begins around 7:00 PM. Limited menu options will be available for purchase. Not to mention beer! *Please Note* A few of our cafes have approached capacity a… Monday, February 9, 2015, 7:00 PM.
