HMC Hospice of Medina County Volunteer Education Series

HMC Hospice of Medina County, a Hospice of the Western Reserve affiliate, is seeking volunteers to assist in private residences, nursing homes, assisted living communities, our three Hospice House locations, and hospital settings. As a vital part of Hospice of the Western Reserve’s team, volunteers come from all walks of life and have a variety of skills, talents and abilities. Opportunities to serve are diverse: visit patients and families to provide companionship, socialization, and comfort; help with legacy work, transportation, light housework, and meal preparation; run errands; make phone calls; help with clerical work; attend health fairs; make presentations. Volunteers with specialized professional qualifications and training are also needed: attorneys, licensed hair dressers, massotherapists, pet therapy dogs and their handlers. Hoppy Hour at Cleveland Botanical Garden

Wednesday nights in Cleveland get a lot better this fall with the return of Cleveland Botanical Garden's popular Hoppy Hour beer series! Sample pale ales, dark lagers and other cool craft brews while discussing hops and horticulture with staff from the Botanical Garden and experts from Great Lakes Brewing Company, Beverage Distributors and Butcher and the Brewer. Rock Sober Feast

On Wednesday, September 28, 2016, Genesis by the Lake will be celebrating their first anniversary with the 1st Annual Rock Sober Feast at the historic Sandusky State Theatre in downtown Sandusky. Genesis by the Lake, a non-profit corporation located in Vermilion Township, provides a safe, supportive and sober living community for women in recovery and their children. Through their partnerships with several government and private organizations, they are creating an entire “Circle of Care” to ensure substance use disorders are treated like the chronic illnesses they are. Genesis Recovery Housing provides one of the previously missing, yet critical components in the Circle of Care approach to treatment: a safe, supportive and sober place to call home. Oberlin Artist Recital Series - Zukerman Trio

Since its inception in 1878, Oberlin’s Artist Recital Series at historic Finney Chapel has presented more than 1,000 of the world’s most acclaimed and accomplished musicians, conductors, orchestras, chamber ensembles, and composers. On September 30th, the ARS presents the Zukerman Trio! The trio is lead by legendary composer and violinist Pinchas Zukerman, who shares the stage with cellist and wife Amanda Forsyth, and Oberlin Professor of Piano Angela Cheng. Beginning in 2011, the Zukerman Trio began offering trio repertoire by Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Dvorak, and Shostakovich. Invitations from major festivals and venues led to the official launch of the Zukerman Trio in 2013. The ensemble has traveled around the globe to appear in Japan, China, Spain, Italy, France, Hungary, South Africa, Istanbul, Russia, and throughout the United States. 39th Annual Walk of Hope

The Walk of Hope is sponsored by Catholic Charities Disability Services & Ministries. Disability Services & Ministries provide many programs for people with disabilities in 8 counties of Northeast Ohio. These include summer camp, adult social and educational programs, ministry, and so much more. 100% of the funds raised at the Walk of Hope will benefit these programs for persons with disabilities, their loved ones and their supporters. The Walk is approximately a 2 mile (or less) tour through Tremont, followed by a raffle giveaway and a shorter walk around Lincoln Park for those unable to do the longer walk. Anyone 18 years and older who has never enrolled as a patient at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine’s main clinic is invited to receive a free exam and x-rays at the fourth annual Admitting Day on Wednesday, October 5. Appointments, which can last up to two hours, are required and can be made by calling 216-368-8730 or 216-368-3200 during business hours. The free services—provided at the dental school’s Comprehensive Care Clinic—have a value of up to $90. The clinic expects to admit about 300 new patients. Science Café Cleveland presents “The Scientific Study of Voters: Culture Wars, Gender Gaps, and Other Divisions in the 2016 Presidential Electorate”

As the date for the November elections approaches, we will be subjected to an increasing barrage of state and national polls about all the contests at stake. Each polling outfit has its own methodology and this can result in results being released on the same day that seem to provide quite different snapshots of public opinion even though they are purportedly measuring the same thing. While the top line of the polls tell how many people support each candidate, often more interesting are the internals of the polls that disaggregate the results and provide some insight into the extent that various demographic groups support each candidate. Ryan L. Claassen and John C. Green, who are experts in public opinion analysis and specialize in the empirical study of religion and politics, will discuss the survey research method and what public opinion analyses tell us about which groups will support Trump or Clinton in November and why. Hoppy Hour at Cleveland Botanical Garden
