Last year we asked our vendors to donate 10% of their sales and Lucky Dog donated above and beyond for our cause and we couldn’t be happier to have them back. Lastly and most importantly we will have several local artist… Saturday, August 9, 2014, 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM. Good Day Moon Gallery 1388 Cranford Avenue Lakewood, OH 44107. Science Café Cleveland presents “Getting Back in Touch with the World: Restoring Sensation after Limb Loss”

Submitted DESCRIPTION: One of the first biology lessons in grade school is of the five senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. They are the (only) connection to the world and people around us. Close your eyes, you can get a sense of the challenges of blindness; Plug your ears a sense of deafness. However, of the five senses, the one we take most for granted, and least understand the devastating impact of its loss, is touch. The sense of touch comes from the skin, the largest sensory organ in the human body. For nearly 2 million people in the U.S. and 185,000 more each year, the loss of sensation is one of the most significant effects of limb loss resulting from trauma or vascular disease. Body-powered prostheses are often preferred over more functional devices because the user can “feel” the pressure of a grip through a requisite body harness. Providing representative sensory information on the residual limb is unnatural and does not directly match the sensory locations expected by the user’s visual experience… Monday, August 11, 2014, 7:00 PM. Inferno: Video Installation

Submitted July 17 – October 19, 2014 Included with Museum admission; $12 Adult, $10 Senior, $10 Student (12+), $5 Youth (5-11) A powerful new cinematic offering from renowned Israeli artist Yael Bartana, Inferno centers on a replica of Solomon’s Temple currently being constructed by a Neo-Pentecostal Church in São Paulo, Brazil. In just 18 minutes Inferno implodes traditional concepts of place, time and belief. Bartana combines real events with a “pre-imagining” that is sure to inspire a flood of questions and spark debate around topics such as creation, ritual, memorialization and commercialization. With its rich pageantry, stylized costuming and references to epic Hollywood blockbusters, Inferno has been referred to as a “visual feast.” The Maltz Museum’s video installation is the film’s second showing in the U.S. and its Midwest premiere. Support for Inferno is generously provided by Toby Devan Lewis, Dealer Tire, Israel Art Connection and Federation and Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. Sunday, August 17, 2014, 12:00 PM.
