Eugene biologist Tom Titus will discuss and sign copies of his new book, "Blackberries in July: A Forager's Field Guide to Inner Peace," at 1 PM on Saturday, May 18.
The book is Titus’ memoir about returning home to Oregon, and comprises essays and poetry based on traditional foraging, food growing, and harvesting based upon his family’s experience living in the Oregon Coast Range. Chapters are dedicated to clamming, blackberry picking, gardening, cider pressing, salmon fishing, and mushroom hunting.
Bookstore owner Ted Watkins said, “Tom’s book has been met with rave reviews, which is due to the respectful way Tom integrates his love of the natural world into the fabric of his own life with insight and humor; I know “Blackberries in July” will be a hit for south coast readers.”
Titus is a fourth generation Oregonian who grew up in the rural Willamette Valley foothills, where his family “reveled in the outdoors, and vacations were usually camping trips that with hiking, fishing, and hunting.”…

Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering Mandarin Chinese for Beginners in Gold Beach. This class introduces students to Chinese conversation and written language skills to communicate with native Chinese. Instructor Yan Huang is a native of China and has taught Chinese at Humboldt State University.

Beginning Mandarin Chinese
Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering Mandarin Chinese for Beginners in Gold Beach. This class introduces students to Chinese conversation and written language skills to communicate with native Chinese. Instructor Yan Huang is a native of China and has taught Chinese at Humboldt State University.
This 11-week class will start April 2 and is scheduled to meet on Tuesdays 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Southwestern’s Gold Beach Center. The cost is $44.00 and a textbook will be available for purchase.

One of the most unique, scenic, wilderness relay courses in the United States - Along this 212 mile relay race runners will trace the wild Rogue River through the Cascade Mountains to the wild Oregon coast.

Pistol River Contra Dance
Community Contra Dances held the third Friday of each month at the Pistol River Friendship Hall. Potluck, a quick lesson, and then dancing 'til we drop!
Description
What is contra? It is a form of folk dancing ~ Americans have been enjoying contra for ages! We have videos posted on our wall that will give you a taste. NO EXPERIENCE is necessary. There will be a quick lesson at the beginning of each dance to bring newbies up to speed.
General Information
Dances are held with a live band the third Friday of each month starting with a potluck @ 6 p.m. There will be a lesson @ 6:30 p.m. and the dance will be held from 7-10 p.m. Inexpensive beverages will be sold throughout the event. $5 per person is the suggested donation to assist in covering expenses.

Pistol River Contra Dance
Community Contra Dances held the third Friday of each month at the Pistol River Friendship Hall. Potluck, a quick lesson, and then dancing 'til we drop!
Description
What is contra? It is a form of folk dancing ~ Americans have been enjoying contra for ages! We have videos posted on our wall that will give you a taste. NO EXPERIENCE is necessary. There will be a quick lesson at the beginning of each dance to bring newbies up to speed.
General Information
Dances are held with a live band the third Friday of each month starting with a potluck @ 6 p.m. There will be a lesson @ 6:30 p.m. and the dance will be held from 7-10 p.m. Inexpensive beverages will be sold throughout the event. $5 per person is the suggested donation to assist in covering expenses.
