Nia: Music-Inspired Conditioning Practice

Classes/Workshops Nia is a sensory-based movement practice for all body types, cultivating the joy of movement to integrate the mind, body, emotions, and spirit. No previous dance or movement experience is necessary. Nia blends nine specific movement forms from dance arts, martial arts, and healing arts. A typical class may warm up with slow t’ai chi-like movements, then build energy in a playful jazzy style, reach an aerobic peak with kicks and punches, cool down with a modern dance flow, and end with yoga-inspired stretches and relaxation. Throughout the class, the instructor gives simple verbal or postural cues for the steps. Choreography is interspersed with non-structured movement for a blend of form and freedom. Participants are always invited to tailor their experience to their particular somatic needs and preferences—that is, to move their body’s way. Cost: First five classes free. $10 drop-in. $8 to $4 with class card. Region: Medford. Directions: Nia classes take place in the Sky Room of the beautiful Rasa Center, located near Asante Hospital and Centennial Golf Course. Phone: 541-482-2752. Walk to End Alzheimer's

Fundraisers The Walk to End Alzheimer’s provides an opportunity for the Alzheimer’s community — family and professional caregivers, those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, people who have lost a loved one to Alzheimer’s and those who know Alzheimer’s could impact them at any time during their lives — to come together and say NOW is the time to fight back. The Walk offers the community a chance to see the courage and beauty of people who are fighting a disease that will ultimately win. It offers hope that in the near future this disease will not be victorious — it will be treatable and, eventually, curable. Most important, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s brings people who are in the midst of an incredibly isolating disease the chance to see they are not enduring this disease alone. Registration opens at 10 a.m. The Walk begins at 11 a.m. For more information, contact Lucy Gantman at lgantman@alz.org or 503-416-0213.
