Free Fall Salmon Viewing Hike

Hiking Chinook salmon are now returning to the Illinois, Applegate and Rogue valleys to spawn and die, as they have for millennia. Their inland river journey is an impressive one; often requiring them to leap daunting waterfalls and swim through whitewater rapids in order to reach their natal spawning grounds. Join Siskiyou Project ecologist Rich Nawa on Sunday, Nov. 1, or Saturday, Nov. 7, for a free hike to view spawning salmon on the Illinois River. Nawa will explain the Chinook salmon life cycle and their habitat needs. Hikers may see as many as 50 salmon spawning or leaping at waterfalls on these trips. The hike will begin with a 1-mile walk on flat ground to see migrating salmon along the Illinois River at Forks State Park at 1 p.m. At approximately 2:30 p.m. the group will carpool to Little Falls, on the Illinois River near Kerby, to hike about ½ mile to see leaping salmon. The trail to Little Falls can be muddy and is rocky near the falls. For more information, call the Siskiyou Project at 541-4… Directions: The Forks State Park turn-off is about 1/2 mile south of Cave Junction along Highway 199. Holistic Childbirth Class

Health If you are looking for something different and meaningful as you prepare for birth and parenting, you are in the right place! Q: Do BIRTHING FROM WITHIN® Classes emphasize or teach natural birth? A: BIRTHING FROM WITHIN classes do not exclusively promote "natural birth" or vilify hospital or medical birth. An easy, natural birth does not need to be "taught;" we cannot "make" it happen, but when it does, be grateful. Our mentors strive to cultivate (in themselves and in parents) an attitude of mindfulness, birthing- and living-in-awareness and simply doing the best we can in any given moment. This is vastly different from striving to achieve a particular outcome, such as birthing normally, or thinking we can and should control life or birth. Several fundamental differences make Birthing From Within classes more than just another childbirth education method. In many ways, our classes stand alone. In your Birthing From Within classes, you will learn how to: Experience birth as a rite of… Directions: corner of Crater Lake Ave and Main St. Category: Health. Reservations: required. Theatre: “Anton in Show Business” by Jane Martin

Regional “Anton in Show Business” by Jane Martin runs from November 5-15 in the Center Square Theatre at Southern Oregon University. In this backstage theatrical circus, Martin skewers the archetypes of players in the American theatre while affirming theatre is indelible. “The star has no scruples, the artistic director has no sense, the corporate funder has no clue, and this appears to be the status quo!” writes Robert Faires in The Austin Chronicle. “With all this ego, greed, lust, insecurity, and ineptitude, the American theatre is making Hollywood look like a Benedictine monastery.” The play received the American Theatre Critics/Steinberg New Play Award in 2001. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Thursday-Saturday, November 5-7 and Thursday-Sunday, November 12-15, with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday, November 14-15.
