OHSU Research Week: David S. Schneider, Ph.D. Keynote Speaker
School of Medicine
David S. Schneider, Ph.D. assistant professor of microbiology and immunology at the Stanford School of Medicine, has been invited to speak at OHSU Research Week by the OHSU Graduate Student Organization.
When we suffer from infections, our bodies can fight in two ways. The first is to kill the microbes, and the second is to avoid symptoms. Dr. Schneider's lab has been concentrating on this second part, trying to determine why we suffer when we are infected. His lab has developed an ecological approach for studying populations, called disease tolerance, to work on individuals. Their goal is to map out the course an individual takes through disease space as they sicken and recover and then to find methods of twisting this space to improve recovery. They use model infections in flies and mice and try to apply their ideas to human diseases like malaria.
Dr. Schneider earned his B.S. in biochemistry at the University of Toronto and his Ph.D. in molecular biology at University of California, Berkeley. At Ber…

Mindfulness meditation teaches skills for being in the present moment no matter what the situation. Mindfulness meditation studies show positive outcomes in quality of life and symptoms across a variety of health issues (stress, depression, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, chronic pain, and cancer). The key to getting the most out of mindfulness is PRACTICE. Mindfulness can be applied to any object of attention. For example, you can focus on your breath, sounds, thoughts, or emotions. You can also be mindful during your daily life…

The interplay of nutrition in the developmental origins of health and disease
School of Medicine
An hour lecture, followed by a reception.
How can good nutrition play a part in reducing the prevalence of chronic diseases? Drs. Barker and Thornburg will discuss the vital relationships between maternal prenatal diet, fetal health and adult onset disease.
David Barker M.D. Ph.D. is director of international collaborations at the OHSU Bob and Charlee Moore Institute for Nutrition and Wellness, Professor in Cardiovascular Medicine at OHSU and Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Southampton, UK. Over twenty-five years ago, he was the first to show that people who had low birth weight are at greater risk of developing coronary heart disease and diabetes - now a widely accepted fact. This finding led to a new understanding that chronic adult diseases are "programmed" in the womb by malnutrition and other harmful influences.
Kent Thornburg, Ph.D. is Professor and Associate Chief for Research in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at OHSU, director of the Heart Research Center…

Mindfulness Meditation Drop-In
Student Center
Mindfulness is paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. You can also be mindful during your daily life activities like eating, cooking, or brushing your teeth.
The goal of this weekly drop-in mindfulness meditation class is to practice many different types of guided mindfulness meditations to experience which ones work best for you. Each week will highlight a different guided mindfulness meditation. No experience is required.

Xiaolin Nan
Environmental and Biomolecular Systems
Dr. Xiaolin Nan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at OHSU. He received bachelor's degrees in Chemistry and Economics, and a master's degree in Chemistry from Peking University, and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from Harvard University. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University of California. His graduate studies focused on wet-chemistry approaches to fabricating aligned single wall carbon nanotubes and the biophysical analysis of dynamic processes in living cells using high time resolution, spatial precision and chemical selectivity strategies. As a postdoctoral fellow he established a unique biological system for controlled expression of tagged proteins for single-molecule counting and localization using super resolution imaging based on PALM and STORM principles. He investigated the oncogenic processes and intracellular trafficking of Ras-GTP dimer formation and Raf activation.

Mindfulness is paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.

Teaching Clinical Judgment though Simulation: A Workshop for Nurse Educators
Simulation & Clinical Learning Center
July 1 - 3, 2013 in Portland, Oregon
Accrediting bodies and the Institute of Medicine have set a trajectory toward educating prelicensure students to become excellent clinical thinkers in interprofessional contexts. Emphasis will be placed on simulations that focus on clinical judgment, teamwork, interdisciplinary communication, and resource management. Participants will also learn concepts and skills associated with debriefing. Learners will actively engage with the tools needed to design and implement a simulation program in their institutions.
Faculty presenting this course are experienced, interprofessional simula…
