Marquam Hill Lecture - Repairing the liver: Prospects for cell therapy as an alternative to organ transplantation
Stem cells are “generic” cells that can produce exact copies and develop into specialized cells for organs and tissues, such as heart muscle or brain tissue. Stem cell research has long-term potential for development of treatments that affect disease on a cellular level, and holds promise for such diseases as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and Parkinson’s Disease. Part of Dr. Grompe’s research focuses on the development of cell therapy in the field of organ transplantation. While a limited supply of donated organs is currently the only viable option for patients awaiting transplantation, much effort is being directed towards using pluripotent stem cell therapy to repair damaged liver tissue. Dr. Grompe will discuss these and other issues in the final lecture of the 2009-2010 season. Dr. Grompe is currently a Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Molecular & Medical Genetics and Director of the Oregon Stem Cell Center.

New Research Tools for Data Collection and Management
OCTRI can provide researchers with tools for data collection and management. REDCap applications are user-friendly—fast and easy to set-up, web-based, and secure—ensuring data quality and compliance with regulatory requirements. This tutorial will provide researchers and their staff with an overview of REDCap capabilities. Attendees will learn how to prepare and create REDCap databases and surveys.
REDCap offers two secure, web-based applications (REDCap and REDCap Survey) designed to support data management for research studies. REDCap provides: 1) a stream-lined process for rapidly building a database or online survey; 2) a user friendly interface for collecting data; 3) audit trails for tracking data manipulation; 4) exports to common statistical packages; and 5) advanced features, such as branching logic, file uploading, and calculated fields.
