The New China: Capitalism and Contradictions
The New China: Capitalism and Contradictions—In the past 30 years, China has been transformed from a third world, developing country into the second largest economy in the world. With rapidly growing modern cities, ultra-modern infrastructure, vast industrial sector and prosperous and growing middle class, China's transformation has been rapid and is almost complete. The "old" China, however, is evident in rural areas and vast western regions that lag well behind the coastal eastern heartland. A look into both the past and the many contradictions that China displays today will be examined to predict what the future holds for this rising super power. Baher Ghosheh, Ph.D.

A City Reborn: The Story of Braddock, Pennsylvania
A City Reborn: The Story of Braddock, Pennsylvania—Founded around the site of Andrew Carnegie's first steel mill, the city of Braddock's fortunes declined in lockstep with the American steel industry. As the town's population fell from a peak of more than 20,000 to just 2,300, its buildings, infrastructure and economy unraveled. With 90% of everything lost -population, buildings, homes, businesses- the challenges seemed almost insurmountable. The Mayor of Braddock, PA will discuss the city’s history, as well as why redevelopment worked. Hon. John Fetterman, M.A.
