LHVA announces its inaugural "Views from the Valley" photo contest. Amateur and professional photographers are invited to submit images that help to tell the story of the Lackawanna Valley. All images must be of the Lackawanna Heritage Valley, which includes all of Lackawanna County and designated townships or boroughs of Luzerne, Wayne and Susquehanna Counties. PA Lions Beacon Lodge Camp announces its 61st consecutive year of camping. The Beacon Lodge is committed to providing individuals with special needs the opportunity to enjoy a camping experience. There is special emphasis placed on interests for recreation, learning, and to encourage new challenges.
A dual program is carried out for children and adults simultaneously, but each group enjoys separate activities, such as bowling, swimming, mini-golf, arts & crafts, music, drama, rock climbing, fishing, paddle-boating, canoeing, kayaking, archery and many more. Children are accommodated in cabins, while adults are housed in dormitories.
The 2009 camping season opens on June 6 and closes August 12. Camp sessions are six or 11 days based on eligibility criteria.

Zions Lutheran Church, Third & Fell Streets in Weatherly will host a concert by renowned pianist and recording artist, Jim Hendricks on Saturday Nov. 7th at 3:00pm.
Pianist Jim Hendricks began intriguing musicians and family members as a child with the uncanny ability to play anything he heard on records and memorize any printed music that came across the piano. While still in grammar school, Jim was able to transcribe by ear complex harmonies and melodies - without the use of a piano. He continued intensive musical study and was considered a professional as a teenager.
After high school Jim performed with such greats as Dave Brubeck, Della Reese, Jack Jones, Louie Bellson, Clark Terry, Tito Puente, Rita Moreno, Maynard Ferguson, Jon Faddis, Arturo Sandoval, and many others. This benefit will help raise funds for Camp Papillon's Build an Adoption Center & Sanctuary Fund. Camp Papillon currently houses approximately 100 dogs, cats & other animals in a large network of volunteer foster homes in Monroe County, and is the largest animal rescue in the County. The show is a fast paced magic show performed by world traveled magician Mark Clark. It includes feats such as Houdini-style escapes, mentalism, the production of doves and rabbits, and making his assistant disappear and appear. It includes plenty of audience participation. There also will be children's items that will be auctioned at the event.
