On a collective level: why do we seek affiliation to groups - to tribes, religions, cultures, nation-states? What are the positive and negative effects of the different layers of our identity? What is the role of religion in defining identities in our world, particularly in the case of Islam? Is it possible for groups that have different collective identities to live peacefully together? Screening 'Performing the Passion'

Special Events Performing the Passion: An evening of reflection on Bach’s “Passion according to St. John.” "Performing the Passion" is a short documentary film made by Professor Margot Fassler, of Yale University and the University of Notre Dame, and Jacqueline C. Richard, of the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University. The film documents the performance of the 1725 Passion according to St John by J.S. Bach. The 1725 is very different from the 1724 version we usually hear, both musically and theologically, and it is almost never performed. When the all-student Yale Schola Cantorum and the Yale Collegium performed it recently, Fassler and Richard made the film to explore the significance of this forgotten version of the work through interviews with the performers and musicologists, and also with New Testament scholars regarding the anti-Jewish passages in the Gospel and in Bach's rendering and other aspects of the Gospel text. There will be a screening of the film at 7 pm on March 22, 2010, in the parish hall, followed… Monday, March 22, 2010, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM. parish hall.
