Connecticut River Eagles Trip
Tours & Field Trips (also see Outdoors)
Winter is a wonderful time of year to go bird watching, improve your naturalist skills, or simply hike with less worries of mosquitoes and ticks. Colorful ducks congregate along RI shores, rare birds are often sighted after seasonal storms, and it is also owl breeding season. This is the best time to hear owl hoots and screeches during the early evening hours as they search for mates and defend their territories. To celebrate the wonders of nature in winter, Norman Bird Sanctuary is offering several educational opportunities.
If you’re interested in winter birds and don’t want to travel, NBS is offering an Owl Prowl on Thursday, January 26th from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the Sanctuary. This program starts indoors where you will learn about the different species of owls in Rhode Island, their unique adaptations, and then you will be introduced to one of our resident birds-of-prey. Following the presentation, we will head out on the trails in search of owls. We will make frequent stops to listen for their ca…

Did you know that frogs & toads are disappearing at an alarming rate across the globe? Get involved by becoming a FrogWatch Volunteer and help scientists keep an eye on Rhode Island frogs & toads.
Due to a number of factors such as habitat loss, pollution & disease, more than one-third of amphibian species are faced with possible extinction. This has led to what many conservationists call a global amphibian crisis. Though there don’t appear to be any immediate threats to the species found locally in New England, the monitoring & data collected through the FrogWatch program will help conservationists to keep tabs on these populations and react to any decline much more quickly.

NESEA RI - The Renewables Power Plant Boom
Class ~ Course ~ Demo ~ Lecture ~ Seminars ~ Training ~ Workshop
Over the last decade, the development of renewable energy generation facilities has increased exponentially as major companies and experienced power plant developers have entered the game. Please join us this MONDAY to find out what is driving and threatening this market from Robert Tormey, a Rhodie and seasoned renewable power plant developer with over 28 years of experience.
Bob's career has tracked the shifting profile of this industry. He began in renewables in 1982; spent the dry years in natural gas where he coordinated hundreds of millions of dollars in plant investments; and returned from whence he came to work on landfill gas generation plants and utility scale solar PV generation projects totaling over $150 million.
Hope you can make it!

Resident Canada Goose Population Stabilization Training
Class ~ Course ~ Demo ~ Lecture ~ Seminars ~ Training ~ Workshop
USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in partnership with the RI State Conservation Committee and RI Conservation Districts is offering four workshops and/or trainings on Resident Canada Goose Population Stabilization and developing Grassroots efforts to control Resident Canada Geese.
Resident Canada Geese populations can inflict significant damage on agricultural land in the form of water quality impairment, crop loss, and subsequent erosion. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, geese also produce heavy concentrations of fecal droppings which can lead to excess nutrient enrichment of ponds and lakes. The additional nutrients then lead to excessive plant growth such as algae and other nuisance plants. Rapid increases in algae can then limit the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water for other aquatic organisms. These large, dense geese populations also pose a risk to other species of birds through transmission of avian diseases.
To mitigate effects on water quality, the RI Conserva…

Why do people keep bees? It's a good hobby for people who love nature and enjoy watching and learning about bees and the flowers they pollinate and gather nectar from. Topics covered include:
Getting started
The honeybee life cycle
Choosing an apiary
Buying bees and equipment
Installing package bees
Catching Swarms
Bee diseases and pests
Spring Inspections
Getting ready for the honeyflow
Wintering bees

Join Kimball naturalist Bob Kenney on an exploration of the snow-covered woods and fields of the Kimball Wildlife Refuge and Burlingame State Park next door, in the quietest season of the year. Our past winter walks have discovered deer and fox tracks in the snow; crossbills in the pines; otters, muskrats, and even bald eagles on the frozen pond; and a Northern Three-Toed Woodpecker in 1991. We'll finish by warming up around the stove with a steaming bowl of vegetarian chili. Start wishing for fresh snow now (good for tracks), only not as much as in some years!

Class ~ Course ~ Demo ~ Lecture ~ Seminars ~ Training ~ Workshop
The Next Round of Free and Informative Workshops on Canada Goose Abatement and available NRCS Funding will be held on: February 20th, 21st and 22nd.
USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in partnership with the RI State Conservation Committee and RI Conservation Districts is offering three workshops on Canada Goose abatement for livestock…

2012 Bee School
Class ~ Course ~ Demo ~ Lecture ~ Seminars ~ Training ~ Workshop
Why do people keep bees? It's a good hobby for people who love nature and enjoy watching and learning about bees and the flowers they pollinate and gather nectar from. It insures that you will always have good pollination in your gardens. Some people keep bees because they love honey! Some people even keep bees because they have arthritis and wish to get stung to alleviate arthritic symptoms.
The Rhode Island Beekeepers Association teaches beginner beekeeping classes every year in February and March.
Topics covered include:
Getting started
The honeybee life cycle
Choosing an apiary
Buying bees and equipment
Installing package bees
Catching Swarms
Bee diseases and pests
Spring Inspections
Getting ready for the honeyflow
Wintering bees
There will be a variety of beekeeping equipment displayed and demonstrated each week. Beekeeping catalogs and other handouts will be distributed and several beekeeping videos will be shown.

A History of the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island: Keepers of the Bay/Lecture and book signing by Robert Geake
Class ~ Course ~ Demo ~ Lecture ~ Seminars ~ Training ~ Workshop
In the early twentieth century while Historical Societies were placing monuments and plaques around Rhode Island to preserve historical sites, many places of Narragansett tribal memory were forgotten and left vulnerable to private sale and developers. Now, a few newly-discovered places are being preserved while still others are "tucked away deep in the woods" known only to a few. In exploring places of Narragansett tribal memory, this lecture, presented by author Robert Geake, will chronicle the inscribed rocks of Narragansett Bay as well as of some of those sites that have faded from the pages of white history, but are still places of meaning for the Narragansett Tribe.
Robert will be available after the lecture to sign copies of his book A History of the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island: Keepers of the Bay.
