Ann Woods "TOWER" Exhibition

GHF will open the doors to the 1859 St. Joseph’s Church for a special exhibition of artist Ann Wood’s “TOWER." The exhibit will be open, free of charge, November 29th during the Galveston Artwalk from 6 – 9 p.m. Wood’s work generally incorporates two and three-dimensional pieces into dramatic installations. These environments have a Rococo visual appeal that vividly reference topiaries, bouquets, and desserts, while also acknowledging historical paintings and sculptures. The large-scale work twist the idea of the traditionally male-made monument into a feminine, animal-shaped super-cake that simultaneously reminds the viewer of the discordant ideas of nurture and humiliation. “Tower is an installation created specifically for St. Joseph’s Church in Galveston,” explains Ann. “Being site-specific, it is first and foremost inspired by the church’s impressive Gothic revival altar and other decorations. Secondary inspiration includes Byzantine mosaics of Jesus as a shepherd surrounded by his flock and monume… Business Name: 1859 St. Joseph Church. Cost: Free. Orna Feinstein: "Now and Zen: a 15-Year Retrospective"

Galveston Arts Center presents a collection of work from Houston-based monoprint artist Orna Feinstein. Feinstein graduated from the Glassell school of Art in 2002, and earned her BFA from the University of Houston in 2008. This year, she celebrates fifteen years of contemporary printmaking with a traveling retrospective exhibition, curated by Professir Vincent Falsetta of the Art Department at University of North Texas, Denton.  Inspired and fascinated by the interior geometry organic things — the concentric patterns of tree rings or the cellular structure of a plant when observed under a microscope, Feinstein investigates the printing processes using oil inks on various surfaces such as fabric, paper and Plexiglas that she assembles or stitches together. Her later, three-dimensional works examine themes of life and progression, reinventing the monoprint as an abstract physical object that advances, accordion-like, across space and time. The pieces selected for this show demonstrate the evolution in… Business Name: Galveston Arts Center. Cost: Free. Contact: (409)763-2403.
