DJ Williams Projekt at Cafe Diem

When you combine a tight groovin' rhythm section, sweet horn lines, and an amazing guitar player player who plays with honest to God soul, you've got yourself a solid winner when it comes to entertaining a crowd. Complex or simple, Williams's lines become funk chops, picking up speed one minute and slamming a 180 on a dime the next with the "Projekt" backing it up all along and enhancing the ride. The band describes it as "a soulful ensemble of jazz, on a melodic R&B vibe, laced with a grooved down hip hop back beat." http://www.myspace.com/djwmusic. Hymn for Her at Balliceaux

$5. Hymn for Her - http://hymnforher.com/ “Created using broom handle cigar box banjo, dobro, bass drum, hi-hat and harmonica, the music of Lucy & Wayne and The Amairican Stream by US duo Hymn For Her, proves categorically that you don’t need a megabuck budget to create some high-end kick-ass boogie. Recorded in the classic sixteen-foot 1961 Bambi Airstream trailer (caravan) that they call home, it’s an impossible-to-categorise and unforgettable sonic wall of banjo-thrash-country-rock-acid-blues of the sort that you could imagine Jack White having on his iPod”. - UK’s R2 (Rock ‘n’ Reel) magazine “Fuzzed out folkie Americana straight outta the Airstream!!” – Jim Diamond-engineer/producer (White Stripes). The Devil Makes Three at Capital Ale House

Advance $12.50; Day of $15. The Devil Makes Three - http://www.thedevilmakesthree.com/ Hailing from Santa Cruz, the ragtime-bluegrass punk outfit The Devil Makes Three are all about doing things the right way. In their video for “Do Wrong Right” off of their 2009 release of the same name, the trio honestly proclaim, “If you’re gonna raise a ruckus, one word of advice. If you’re gonna do wrong, buddy, do wrong right.” Check out a live performance of their ode to all things mischief. SF Weekly The Devil Makes Three doesn't have a drummer, but the band doesn't need one. Cooper McBean's percussive banjo accents and Lucia Turino's forceful slaps on her bass supply more than enough rhythm. Guitarist and lead singer Pete Bernhard completes the trio with a bluesy vocal style that's part Louis Prima, part Merle Haggard. The group has been carving a niche since arriving on the scene six years ago, with a sound that combines bluegrass, old-time music, folk, rockabilly, and Piedmont blues and ragtime, all played… Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 9:00 PM – Thursday, May 24, 2012, 12:00 AM. 623 E. St. Vincent at The National

Doors: 7:00 pm / Show: 8:00 pm $15 ADV / $18 DOOR St. Vincent - http://www.ilovestvincent.com/ trange Mercy, the beguiling new album from St. Vincent, is an unsparing examination of personal catharsis cloaked in some of the most sublime music of Annie Clark's career. "Many of the songs are about wanting relief from pain, and searching high and low for release," attests Clark. Such powerful emotions prompted — demanded, really — not just a bracingly candid lyrical style but a new musical approach. St. Vincent's acclaimed 2007 debut album Marry Me was created almost entirely on a laptop; the exquisite follow-up, 2009's Actor, was a collection of arrangements fashioned into ornately structured songs. Friday Cheers at Brown's Island: Alabama Shakes, with Robert Ellis

$5. Alabama Shakes - http://www.alabamashakes.com/ Debut album 'Boys & Girls' will be released April 10th (U.S.) and April 9th (internationally)! Overwhelmed by the response they've already received, there is one perception of the band that they want to challenge. "A lot of people think we're a soul revival act," says Cockrell. "That's an honor to me, classic R&B is my favorite kind of music, but everybody has their own influences. Brittany is way more into rock and roll—she likes things pretty amped up most of the time." "Retro soul is not what we’re going for, though it's understandable why people say it," says Howard. "We take inspiration from that, but we all understand Black Sabbath, too. On the record, we left a lot of room for whatever we want to do in the future." Robert Ellis - http://www.robertellismusic.com/ Friday Cheers every Friday May 4–June 29 $5 and $10 depending on the show, children under 12 are free. Cash, Visa and MasterCard are accepted. Explosions In The Sky at Jefferson Theater

Explosions In The Sky Show - Fri. June 22 Tickets - http://jeffersontheater.tickets.musictoday.com/JeffersonTheatre/moreInfo.aspx?event=149794&outlet=2261 When 2010 showed up, we looked around at all the demos, all the instruments, and tried to see some sort of sense, or theme, or anything in it all. and slowly, we found it was already there. One part became two parts, a new guitar line made one part come alive, an added tambourine made another sing. Things started to fit together in ways we couldn't have planned. One song was finished, and less than a week or two later another song was finished. the rest followed over the next six months. All of the songs came from the demos that we had worked on in the previous three years, demos that we had gone away from, and then come back to, and then expanded. The album is called "take care, take care, take care." and even though that title sounds like a sign-off from us, it is far from it. Friday, June 22, 2012, 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM. 110 E. Main St. Charlottesville, VA. For more info visit www.jeffersontheater.com.

Tickets are $25 advance and $30 day of show. http://www.dickdale.com/ Dick Dale (born Richard Anthony Mansour) is a pioneer of surf rock and one of the most influential guitarists of the early 1960s. His technique influenced future guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. He experimented with reverb and made use of custom made Fender amplifiers. He was born to a Lebanese father and a Polish mother, and soon learned to play the drums, the ukulele, and finally the guitar. Among his early musical influences was his uncle, an oud player performing belly dance music. Much of his early music shows a middle eastern influence. The Miserlou Songfacts states Dale got his start in the late ’50s playing with his band The Del-Tones for surfers at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa, California. With authorities concerned about the mix of young people and guitars, one of the requirements at the Ballroom was that every male patron wear a tie, so the audience was often made up of barefoot… Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 9:00 PM – Thursday, August 2, 2012, 12:00 AM. 623 E. Old Crow Medicine Show with The Lumineers, Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three at Cville Pavillion

Old Crow Medicine Show (OCMS) have come full circle playing their own brand of American roots music with a rock and roll attitude. The quintet met in New York in 1998 and hit the road, traveling city to city in a van and busking in the streets. They eventually settled for a year in North Carolina, where they ran into a bit of good fortune while playing in front of a local pharmacy to an impressed Doc Watson; the folk icon promptly scheduled the band to play at his MerleFest. OCMS can attribute much of their success to their relentless touring schedule. Between headlining shows and countless festivals (Bonnaroo, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, New Orleans Jazz Festival, etc), the band is constantly on the road and thrives off of their fans and live shows. They have made a name for themselves as energetic performers with an unbridled spirit. $38.00 - General Admission. Sunday, August 19, 2012, 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM. 700 E. Main St. Charlottesville, VA.
