Natalie Mishell and Co. – Walkin for Pennies will open at Ashland Coffee & Tea

Natalie was born and raised in sunny southern California where she grew up listening to music in a home filled with the songs and vibes of the late 60’s and early 70’s, from Dylan and Joplin to the British Invasion. By 19 she had taught herself how to play guitar, moved to LA and began writing songs that drew on her personal experiences and the inspiration of her old school, folk-pop roots. After some time spent in LA and touring the USA in 2009 with her first band, Traditional Matter, Natalie decided it was time for a change. She came to NY about four years ago with her incredible vocals, her guitar and dreams. She burst on the music scene and quickly became a fan favorite at many of the local venues in NYC such as Rockwood Music Hall and The Living room. In concert Natalie connects with her audiences through her style of storytelling and her unique Americana vocals. From her heartfelt ballads to her upbeat rockers Natalie knows her audience. In 2011 Natalie put together the band, Natalie Mishell… Wednesday, June 19, 2013, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM. 100 N. Railroad Ave. Ashland, VA. For more info visit www.ashlandcoffeeandtea.com.

Music Makers Exchange Presents: Prabir and The Taters at Gallery 5

Live-Music Infectious melodies & high energy songwriting makes menagerie an immediate favourite among Taterheads! You’ll be singing along by the second verse! This is songwriting from a time when irresistible hooks were just expected, and the Taters don’t disappoint! The Taters have played the Richmond and central VA area for over 16 years, with six CDs of original tunes out. Starting out as an alt-country trio, with acoustic gtr, bass and percussion, we’ve expanded to a quartet (electric guitar & drums), and the music has moved more in a power-pop direction over the last 5 years, though still lots of early country influences. Our biggest emphasis is on melody and vocal harmonies, making us a hit with crowds who grew up in the 60s & 70s and loved AM and early FM radio. The band has been included on several tribute albums, including tributes to Jellyfish, Squeeze, and Rick Nelson. About Music Maker’s Exchange Our mission is to cross cultivate audiences of performing musicians that write music, by featuring their… Thursday, June 20, 2013, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM. 200 W. Farm Vegas at The Camel

Farm Vegas - http://www.farmvegas.net Farm Vegas is an up-and-coming rock and roll quintet from the music-rich riverbeds of Richmond Virginia. Weaving elements of rock, soul, Americana, and blues into a musical tapestry all their own, Farm Vegas has crafted a unique sound that is at once modern yet classic, refreshing yet familiar. In a day and age when musical careers are launched by TV placements and best-selling singers don’t actually sing at all, Farm Vegas has avoided the shortcuts that jump-start but ultimately compromise a band’s career. Shying away from the traditional help of big management, radio airplay, and label support, the band has put together a fiercely-loyal regional following the old-fashion way-- by delivering electrifying live shows night after night-- one college at a time, one club at a time, one city at a time. Farm Vegas is a reminder that bands can still have successful careers away from the glare of the national spotlight. Saturday, June 22, 2013, 9:00 PM – Sunday, June 23, 2013, 12:00 AM. 1621 W. Like many of us, Elijah does not have health insurance. The cost of the multiple surgeries he has already undergone is staggering to say the least, and Elijah still has many months of physical therapy to get through before he can walk again. Elijah Von Cramon Benefit Show: Huff Fest Day 4 at Gallery 5

4 pm bangover show White Laces Heavy Midgets Malatese (Hburg) Tungs Death Cassettes BBQT (DC) Doors 7pm Show 8pm On Wednesday, February 13th, Elijah Von Cramon was walking to his home in Charlotte when he was hit by a car. Lucky to be alive, he nonetheless sustained a fractured pelvis, broken shoulder, broken femur, chipped teeth, and brain damage. Elijah’s band, Richmond favorites PAINT FUMES, was only weeks away from embarking on US and European tours in support of their full-length debut ‘Uck Life’. Instead, he has spent the past three months bedridden, only recently able to enjoy moderate mobility in a wheelchair at the cost of nausea from the astronomical amounts of pain medication required to keep him functional. Like many of us, Elijah does not have health insurance. The cost of the multiple surgeries he has already undergone is staggering to say the least, and Elijah still has many months of physical therapy to get through before he can walk again. Please join us, Elijah’s many friends… Sunday, June 30, 2013, 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM. 200 W. Marshall St. Richmond, VA. For more info visit www.gallery5arts.org.

Marshall Tucker Band at Innsbrook After Hours

FB - http://www.facebook.com/InnsbrookAfterHours http://innsbrookafterhours.com/ Info & tickets - http://innsbrookafterhours.com/concert-schedule/marshall-tuker-band/ In the early fall of 1973 The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage. Their debut album had already spawned numerous hits. The band’s recent release of their Greatest Hits album, in traditional vinyl form, is a time capsule from that period. “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray. As it turned out, the collective talents of The Marshall Tucker Band took them very far indeed. More than four decades later, the new vinyl Greatest Hits release takes us back to the early years of The Marshall Tucker Band, both literally and physically. Mary Flower at Ashland Coffee & Tea

With her warm contralto and dazzling skills as an instrumentalist and arranger, Mary Flower has cemented her status as one of the most dynamic performers on the acoustic blues circuit. Flower is deep in the pocket of the country blues and there are few musicians in the genre bringing as much creative spark and low-key mojo to this century-old music. – Acoustic Guitar Magazine Hailing from Portland, Oregon, guitarist and lap slide player Mary Flower is renowned for her uniquely personal vision of roots music that blends ragtime, acoustic blues and folk – technically dazzling yet grounded in the down-to-earth simplicity of early 20th century American music. With nine albums to her name, this Yellow Dog Records recording artist has earned rave reviews from critics and audiences alike for her instrumental skill – a mastery of the Piedmont blues style that takes most players a lifetime to hone – for which Flower is most celebrated. The Iguanas at Ashland Coffee & Tea

The word “Americana” gets tossed around rather loosely these days; it can mean anything from a hipster with a recently-discovered acoustic guitar to a decades-long denizen of the Grand Ole Opry. But when you set aside the Johnny-come-rootly types from the real deal, it’s a sure bet that you’re going to stray into Iguana territory. Based out of New Orleans for the past couple of decades – save for a short, Katrina-imposed exile in Austin – the Iguanas define a sound of Americana that crosses cultures, styles, eras… and even languages. Their latest album, Sin to Sin, is their first studio recording since 2008’s If You Should Ever Fall on Hard Times, and its release coincides with their appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The Iguanas’ two-decade road may not exactly have driven them from sin to sin, but it’s taken them all over the map, both figuratively and literally. While bassist René Coman is the only member of the band who is a native of the Crescent City, a languid swampiness so deep… Friday, July 12, 2013, 8:00 PM – 10:30 PM. 100 N. The Spring Standards at Ashland Coffee & Tea

The Spring Standards are an energetic force of three-part harmony from New York City circling over a rock n’ roll sound with an old country aftertaste. From small towns to big cities, they explode on stage with spirit, spontaneity, and a style all their own. MTV’s John Norris says “They willingly embrace dissonance, and their execution is impeccable, from their tight, CSN-worthy vocal harmonies to their wickedly intense percussive power.”The Spring Standards are, in no particular order: James Cleare, James Smith and Heather Robb. Each member of the band is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and they use their strengths as a trio to create a sound that listeners might expect from a band twice their size. With an emphasis on three-part harmony and a variety of instrumental switching, their range and energy make each live show a unique event. In fact, the band’s performance set-up is as distinctive as their sound: They take a drum kit and break it up among the three of them, and then they set up along th… Tuesday, July 16, 2013, 8:00 PM – 10:30 PM. 100 N. Then Dierks the bluegrass student and devotee performed with the Del McCoury Band, and after that it was a songwriter’s night with fellow Music Row tunesmiths and a show with Chris Thile’s experimental Punch Brothers. Probably no other artist on country radio in the past ten years could manage this kind of range and versatility. Especially when one considers the broader record. He’s had eight No. 1 singles and written every one of them. He’s performed at Lollapalooza, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Bonnaroo and the CMA Music Festival, tailoring his sets to each. Mandolin Orange at Ashland Coffee & Tea

”Mandolin Orange carries an understanding of tradition and shape it into a thing of beauty. They craft simple songs that go beyond chord progressions and vocal harmonies, leading somehow toward something pure. Using acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin and a hand-me-down fiddle, Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz allure with a heart-worn sensibility. Last year’s Haste Make/ Hard Hearted Stanger combines bluegrass, rock and country for lullabies that swoon.” —Ashleigh Phillips, Independent Weekly Long one of the Triangle’s more popular young bands, Mandolin Orange is now taking a big step toward the national spotlight. In an announcement earlier this week via CMT Edge—the country TV station’s online sounding board for alternative Americana—the Carrboro folk duo revealed that This Side of Jordan, the group’s third album, will be released by Yep Roc Records, the N.C. label that claims such stalwarts as Nick Lowe and Robyn Hitchcock. The album drops on Aug. 6. $12 advance; $15 door. Saturday, August 10, 2013, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM. 100 N. Railroad Ave. Ashland, VA. For more info visit www.ashlandcoffeeandtea.com.

Dale Ann Bradley at Ashland Coffee & Tea

She’s the 2007, 2008 , 2009, 2011, & 2012 IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year and has been hailed by Alison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs as one of the greatest vocalists in country and bluegrass music. A former Coon Creek Girl and mainstay at Kentucky’s Renfro Valley Barn Dance, Bradley commands a list of awards as long as Highway 40, yet a few minutes with her tells you she is something even more than extraordinarily gifted – she’s extraordinarily human. A Primitive Baptist preacher’s daughter out of the hills of Kentucky where no musical instruments were allowed, Bradley grew up in a self-described “backwoods holler” down a rural road where electricity and running water weren’t available until she was in high school – something she has more in common with the first generation of bluegrass than her contemporaries in today’s scene. Website: http://www.daleann.com/ $15 advance; $20 door. Friday, August 23, 2013, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM. 100 N. Railroad Ave. Ashland, VA. For more info visit www.ashlandcoffeeandtea.com.

Donna Ulisse at Ashland Coffee & Tea

Country music fans remember Hampton native Ulisse from her days when she was signed to Atlantic Records in the early 1990’s where she released a critically acclaimed album Trouble at The Door with three singles and two videos. She was also a guest on many national television shows including Hee Haw, Nashville Now, Crook and Chaseand NBC’s Hot Country Nights. These days Donna Ulisse is becoming a key figure in the bluegrass, folk and acoustic music scene as a singer/performer and songwriter. She has recorded five albums in the past five years of her original material which have charted prominently in the Bluegrass Unlimited charts, The Folk DJ National chart, The Americana Music Charts and Billboard Bluegrass chart. Her 2012 Christmas album All The Way To Bethlehem was called “a masterpiece” by Kyle Cantrell, host of Bluegrass Junction on SiriusXM Satellite Radio. Edward Morris, writer for CMT.com dubs her “one of the most commanding voices in bluegrass music.” As a songwriter she has had songs recorded… Thursday, August 29, 2013, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM. 100 N. Louis Ledford at Ashland Coffee & Tea

Louis is home for a visit and brings some of his Richmond buddies together for a concert. “Louis Ledford’s land is the “Old Weird America” Greil Marcus wrote so emotively about. His stories seldom end with a hero on the proverbial mountaintop. His narratives are typically told by the losers, those close to the edge, in the grandest sense. This latest record puts him in front of a microphone, sans accompaniment, where he pours out live-sounding interpretations of his own music, which while not your Daddy’s folk, has one foot planted firmly either side of Cripple Creek. Adios King represents Ledford’s most accomplished work, which at it’s peak stands shoulder to shoulder with that of modern luminaries as Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin, and the like.” – J. Holgren, 9X Magazine. Website: http://louisledford.com. Friday, August 30, 2013, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM. 100 N. Railroad Ave. Ashland, VA. For more info visit www.ashlandcoffeeandtea.com.

The Coal Men – CD release tour at Ashland Coffee & Tea

“I’m wearing out this new Coal Men record. I think it’s masterful start-to-finish. Dave Coleman is one of Americana music’s great songwriters, and I hope this record gets the attention it deserves.” – Todd Snider (East Nashvillian) The Coal Men have been hard at work on a new album for early Fall. With the production help of Joe Garcia and the engineering power of Paradox Production’s Brian Carter (Beauty is a Moment), Dave Coleman, Dave Ray, and Hitch are finished with a 13 song album that takes this roots rock trio into an aggressive and experimental musical horizon. The album features some spectacular guests including Audley Freed (The Black Crowes/Sheryl Crow), Jen Gunderman (The Jayhawks), Will Kimbrough (Rodney Crowell/Emmy Lou Harris), Jarod Manzo (Chris Scruggs) and a mighty horn section made up of Barry Green and Mark Douthit. Overdubs and mixing were done with Lij Shaw at The Toy Box Studio and mastering will be done with Yes Master’s Alex McCullough.
