Richmond Ballet Presents "Coppélia" at CenterStage
Friday, February 10 - 7:00 PM
Saturday, February 11 - 2:00 PM
Saturday, February 11 - 7:00 PM
Sunday, February 12 - 2:00 PM
One of ballet's most charming stories, Coppélia is the comic tale of villagers Swanhilda, her beau Franz, and their encounter with the mysterious toy shop owner, Dr. Coppelius. Swanhilda and Franz's love story is interrupted when Franz turns his gaze to the beautiful girl sitting on Dr. Coppelius' balcony, but she doesn't seem to recognize his advances...in fact, she doesn't seem to move or talk at all because she is really a doll!
While a case of mistaken identity, zany dancing toys, and traditional folk dance ensue, a beautiful classical ballet emerges. Audiences will enjoy Frederic Franklin's lively choreography, all danced to the animated score by Leo Delibes, making this a perfect Valentine's present for the whole family!

Biograph Theatre 40th Anniversary at VCU Grace Street Theater
On its 40th anniversary, the Biograph Theatre, or perhaps something akin to its reanimated spirit, will serve up a pair of highly acclaimed films as a double feature.
In other words, the James River Film Society will present "Breathless" - a 50th anniversary restoration 35mm print no less -- and "Lonely Are the Brave".
This splendid on-the-lam twin bill is guaranteed to make viewers think no less than twice.
Film Blurbs:
Breathless (1960): B&W. Directed by Jean-Luc Godard. Cast: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg. Note: An opportunistic thief on the run becomes irresistible to a pretty American journalism student in Paris. Uh, oh, the guy is dangerous. How long can it last?
Lonely Are the Brave (1962): B&W. Directed by David Miller. Cast: Kirk Douglas, Gena Rowlands, Walter Matthau. Note: To help his friend, a free-spirited cowboy flings himself recklessly at the hobbling effects of modernity … then tries desperately to escape.
Breathless, based on a story by François Truffaut, did much to set…

Biohazard & Madball at Kingdom
Biohazard - http://www.last.fm/music/Biohazard
Biohazard was one of the first bands to regularly incorporate elements of both hip-hop and hardcore metal into their sound; since their lyrical fare dealt with the harshness of urban life and the resulting anger and frustration, which both genres of music have been known to address, the connection only made sense, especially in light of Anthrax's highly effective collaboration with Public Enemy on 1991's "Bring the Noise.".

Brown's Battleground: Students, Segregationists, and the Struggle for Justice in Prince Edward County, Virginia at Library of Virginia
In 1954 after the decision of the U. S. Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education was announced, Prince Edward County shut down its school system rather than comply with the Supreme Court's ruling.
Hear author Jill Titus tell the story of the the seismic changes brought by the Court's decision and Virginia's move to resist desegregation. She illustrates the ways that ordinary people, black and white, battled, and continue to battle, over the role of public education in the United States. A book signing follows the talk.

Red - http://redmusiconline.com/
The epic quest of finding one's identity might be one of the most universal themes found in the pursuit of art. The hopeless wandering replaced by the hope-filled breakthrough has been chronicled time and again in painting, sculpture, prose, poetry, film and, certainly, music.
The men who make up the rock band RED have been through those trials themselves. They've taken those experiences to heart, mixed them with a plethora of influences – be they observations on art they admire, or communications with fans they adore – and now burst forth with a dynamic new set of songs geared toward finding who we truly are, inside and out.

Kenyatta Hill - http://reverbnation.com/kenyattaculturehill
“Take My Hands is the first song on this album which is done by Kenyatta. Just like his father Kenyatta has a great vocal skill. The song is a nice sing-a-long with upbeat riddim. Mighty Race is almost as if Joseph himself song this tune, the song is definitely one of the gems on the album. Daddy is the first tune Kenyatta ever made, it's a tribute to his father and the greatest tune on the album.

Richmond Famous at Gallery 5
The Richmond Comedy Coalition is teaming up with local personalities to present their all-improvised monthly show series. It's live and totally unscripted comedy created on the spot based on true stories from RVA’s most interesting people.
The improvisers will be hearing their guests’ stories for the first time onstage. What unfolds afterwards is as much a mystery to them as it is to you. All the characters, all the scenes - it’s all made up as they go along, creating a show so funny you’d swear itwas scripted (but you know it’s not).

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 makes powerful use of the repetition of small melodic and rhythmic fragments to build a work of stupendous energy and excitement. This is not all that different than the work of current American “Minimalist” composer John Adams, who created his landmark opera “Nixon in China” as a series of imaginative scenarios depicting the historic visit of Richard Nixon to Red China. The dream sequence that is excerpted as The Chairman Dances uses a very similar repetitive rhythmic propulsion as Beethoven’s symphony nearly two centuries earlier.

Slave Trail Walk Tour
This somber and illuminating tour starts at 2 p.m. at Ancarrow's Landing, located at the eastern end of Brander Street. (Take the Maury St. Exit off I-95 and turn right at the bottom of the ramp.) Tours spend one hour at this site and then drive to Lumpkins Jail at 15th and Franklin for another hour. Parts of the program are done in silence, so it is probably not appropriate for small children. No pets.
This walk, led by James River Park Manager Ralph White, will take you from the stone docks at Ancarrow’s Landing on the river through the forest to the site of Lumpkin’s Jail and the Reconciliation Statue.
There is a $5 per person fee. Please register in advance by calling the James River Park at 804-646-8911.

With his imposing physique, larger than life personality, and outrageous videos, it could be easy to lose something important in Colt Ford's ample shadow: the music. But make no mistake, Colt Ford is a musician. A natural drummer, he is as comfortable laying down a beat as he is in front of the mic, singing and talking honestly about the country life he and his devoted audiences have in common.

Lights - http://music.iamlights.com/
When electro-rock sensation Lights first hit the music scene in 2008, she was just a songwriter with a synth and a dream. Her name may have been pluralized but Lights Poxleitner was a one-woman show who played and programmed her own instruments and sang her own lyrics.
This admirable self-reliance is rare in pop—in fact, Lights, signed a publishing deal at 16 and began writing songs for other artists—but after her 2008 self-titled debut EP (precocious enough to earn her a best new artist Juno) and gold-selling full-length follow-up The Listening, Lights was ready to open herself up to collaborations on her unexpectedly experimental album Siberia. And by choosing such leftfield collaborators as live electronic outfit Holy Fuck and rising rapper Shad, she also opened up her sound.

Purity Ring - http://thepurityring.tumblr.com/
Purity Ring is the futuristic pop project of Corin Roddick and Megan James. Purity Ring makes lullabies for the club, drawing equally from airy 90s r&b, lush dream pop, and the powerful immediacy of the very best modern indie pop. Megan James' remarkable voice is at once ecstatic and ethereal, soaring joyfully through Roddick's carefully chopped beats, trembling synths, and past her perfect counterpoint – a ghostly pitched-down vocal which both underscores hooks and renders the entire musical backdrop beautifully alien.

The Lemonheads - http://www.thelemonheads.net/index.php
Evan Griffith Dando formed The Lemonheads with two high school buddies in late winter '86, in their senior year at Boston's tiny Commonwealth School. A few months later, they spawned what is now one of the most sought-after punk relics of the 80s, the indie EP Laughing All the Way to the Cleaners.
Boston-based Taang! Records immediately picked up on The Lemonheads, with three college radio pleasers to follow: the LPs Hate Your Friends (1987), Creator (1988), and Lick (1989). In 1990 Atlantic Records took notice of the massively expanding Lemonheads fanbase in Europe (where they toured in 1989) and America by signing the band and releasing their well-received (in Cambridge, Massachusetts) fourth LP, Lovey.

Great bands break rules, but legends write their own. JANE'S ADDICTION have actually written the rule book for alternative music and culture through a combination of genre-defying classic songs and a cinematic live experience. Their songs serve as the Ten Commandments for alt rock, inspiring an entire generation of bands such as Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and Tool. When the Los Angeles quartet came along, they merged alternative and rock like no one before, becoming the first alternative rock band, creating a new sound and attitude.

Doors: 7:00 pm / Show: 8:00 pm
$17.50 ADV / $20 Door
The Head and The Heart - http://www.theheadandtheheart.com/
Composed largely of transplants to the Seattle area, The Head and the Heart write and play songs that speak to the newness of a fresh start, of the ghosts left behind, of moving forward, all brimming with a soulfulness and hope for a better life than the one we've all been sold.
Stylistically, think a folksy Beatles or Crosby Stills Nash & Young with more instrumental force. Catchy piano melodies stand side by side with a tight trio of harmonies, and solid minimalist drums, groovin bass, and plenty of hand percussion and foot stomps make the live show inspiring and really goddamn fun.
