African American Repertory Theatre: Mahalia! A Gospel Musical

A legend in her own time, Mahalia Jackson (1911-1972) continues to be celebrated as a pioneer of gospel tradition. Her impassioned contralto was one of the most memorable voices of the 20th century, inspiring individuals for whom gospel represented the only true music, as well as the general public. Throughout her life Jackson remained solely committed to gospel, declining to explore other means of vocal expression. Yet her rousing, soulful, and gut-wrenching renditions drawn from the church repertoire provided the creative impetus for musicians of all stripes, including performers of rhythm and blues and rock and roll. Little Richard called her "the true queen of spiritual singers." The African-American Repertory Theatre (AART), under the artistic direction of Derome Scott Smith, invites you to experience the unbridled joy and profound spirituality of Mahalia Jackson's life in song with AART's season opener Mahalia: A Gospel Musical. Tickets - $34-$38. Saturday, November 7, 2009, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM. Gottwald Playhouse 600 E. Grace St. Richmond, VA. For more info visit www.africanamericantheatre.org.

The Art of Remembrance – A Retrospective of Holocaust Art Opens @ Virginia Holocaust Museum

November 9th - December 31st. One of the most significant events in the history of the 20th century was the attempt by Nazi Germany to annihilate the Jewish people. This horrific time with the murder of 6 million Jews plus millions of others considered undesirable by the Nazi regime, left a painful void that will never be healed. As an artist, I have attempted to portray in visual form the history, experiences and the emotions of this time and the devastating impact the Holocaust has had and continues to have. For many years I have been given both the privilege and awesome responsibility to portray in sculpture the memories and experiences of Holocaust survivors. They have entrusted me to tell for them what they feel is imperative for the world to remember. It is the goal of both the survivors and the artist to teach the lessons so that never again will the world turn a blind eye to the suffering and atrocities inflicted on others. Monday, November 9, 2009, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. 2000 East Cary Street Richmond, Virginia 23223. For more info visit www.va-holocaust.com.

This film was directed and edited by Lindsay Stone. Mr. Lebenstein will be on hand to answer questions and sign copies of The Gazebo. Distorted Mirrors: Americans and Their Relations with Russia and China in the Twentieth Century @ Library of Virginia

Free. Eugene Trani, former president of Virginia Commonwealth University, will discuss and sign his latest book with writing partner Donald E. Davis, Professor Emeritus of History at Illinois State University. Distorted Mirrors traces American prejudices toward the two countries in the title by focusing on the views of influential writers and politicians over the course of the 20th century. The authors show where American images of Russia and China originated, how they evolved, and how they have often helped sustain foreign policies generally negative toward the former and positive toward the latter. The book marks a fresh approach to U.S. relations with these countries, emphasizing long-term attitudes that influenced policies rather than the reverse. It shows us that perceptions shaped over the course of the 20th century are crucial for their bearing on the 21st century, particularly if those unrestrained prejudices reemerge. Tuesday, November 10, 2009, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM. 800 East Broad Street Richmond, VA 23219. For more info visit www.lva.virginia.gov.

Reckless Kelly w/ Scott Miller @ The Hat Factory

$12. Reckless Kelly - http://www.recklesskelly.com/ The album art on Reckless Kelly’s new release, Bulletproof (June 24, Yep Roc), is a semi-faithful rendition of the homemade armor Australian outlaw and band namesake Ned “Reckless” Kelly wore during his final police shootout. But don’t assume that imagery and album title represent the Austin-based band’s propensity for shoot-’em-ups, horse-thievin’ or similarly dangerous behavior; their badass streak is manifested mainly in their fiercely incredible ability to rock out, and their “outlaw” credentials stretch about as far as their appreciation for outlaw country. Scott Miller - http://www.thescottmiller.com/ Scott Miller blends folk and rock like there ain’t no words for. The power of storytelling with the power of a compressed electric guitar comes through this Virginian not heard since the likes of Wayne Newton (fellow Virginian) or The Statler Brothers (also of the Commonwealth.) African American Repertory Theatre: Mahalia!

Narrows / Trap Them @ Canal Club

7:00 doors $10.00/$12.00 Narrows - http://www.myspace.com/narrows Spread out across both the United States and two continents, Narrows exists despite geographical inconveniences for the sole purpose of creating devastating noise. Though outside obligations will most likely relegate the live Narrows experience to a truly rare event, the shared need to exorcise their collective demons fuels the trans-global project. Dave Verellen (Botch, Roy), Rob Moran (Unbroken, Some Girls, Over My Dead Body), Ryan Frederiksen (These Arms Are Snakes, Nineironspitfire), Jodie Cox (Tropics, Rohame, Bullet Union), and Sam Stothers (Makeout Boys, Quarantine) are busy men with busy lives. The Narrows project is not meant to define and drive their individual lives. Rather, the band serves as a respite; a rare opportunity to escape; a vengeful howl from the basest corner of the psyche.

Friday, November 20, 2009, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM. Gottwald Playhouse 600 E. Grace St. Richmond, VA. For more info visit www.africanamericantheatre.org.
