Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West
film/cinema/movie listings
Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West is now showing in the MegaDome Theatre at the Science Museum of Western Virginia. One of the most popular National Geographic large-format films of all time, Lewis & Clark will run through August 31, 2008.
Through careful research and meticulous recreations, this scientific expedition lives again on the big screen. Movie-goers will go back 200 years to experience this monumental quest—the adventure, danger and beauty of the unmapped West.
The film chronicles the group of explorers led by Lewis and Clark into uncharted territory to find a water passageway to the Pacific Ocean and describe for science the wonders of the west.
The expedition conquered raging rivers, buffalo-filled prairies, sub-zero temperatures and rugged mountains on their 8,000-mile journey to the Pacific Ocean and back. The generosity of Native Americans is detailed, including the story of Sacagawea, a teen-aged Native American girl who accompanied the group and whose contributions were invaluable…
Cinema: adventure, documentary, education, epic, family, native american movie, period piece, road trip, western. Cost: Tickets are $5 adults; $4.50 seniors; $4 children (ages 3-12). Tickets for all age groups are discounted to $3 for members, for visitors in addition to regular Museum admission, or for visitors during Free Friday Afternoons—the second Friday of each month from noon-6pm when Museum admission is free.

Through more than 50 images Link captures numerous different facets of 1937 life and industry in Louisiana. These include the daily activities of an LSU student, the Catholic blessing of the shrimp boats, oil prospecting, alligator hunting, rice harvesting, cotton marketing, bee insemination, and parties of then Governor Leche.
“Louisiana Link” will present rarely seen prints – offering new insight on a photographer whose name and iconic railroad images enjoy worldwide recognition. Although best known for his dramatic black and white portraits of the vanishing steam locomotive, Link was a versatile photographer who made portraits of friends, records of events and striki…

From Thomas Jefferson’s design of the Virginia State Capitol to Northern Virginia’s soaring post-modern structures of glass and steel, the commonwealth’s architectural triumphs are well-documented. But what of those that never made it beyond the drawing board?
Never Built Virginia will explore a variety of proposed architectural projects from around the commonwealth that remained unbuilt because the architecture was too radical, because funding collapsed, or because they lost favor with their patrons. Never Built Virginia offers examples of structures that never were and poses the question, “What if?”.

Every Tuesday, 5:30-7pm. Taught by Brit Bachellerie, Modern Technique partners a softer ballet turnout with parallel positioning, incorporating deep articulation of the torso and spine with whole body integration, and utilizing free and ‘ordinary’ movement. Floyd Country Store Friday Night Jamboree
music and nightlife
Friday evening at the Floyd Country Store, Blue Ridge Highlands in Floyd County
The Floyd Country Store, home of the Friday Night Jamboree, was constructed around 1910, and has been an important part of the community ever since.
The Jamboree has run for many years with "Granny Rules: no smokin', no drinkin', no spittin', and no cussin'."
The Jamboree starts every Friday at 6:30pm with an hour of bluegrass gospel music. At 7:30pm, dancers hit the floor, flatfooting and clogging to the music of regional Bluegrass or Old-Time bands. The music and dancing continues until at least 10:30pm, with an occasional two-step, square dance, or waltz thrown in for fun. If the crowd is willing, at 10:30pm we'll round up one of the jamming groups that can be found picking outside or upstairs in the store, and they will play for the crowd until around 11:30pm.

An Evening with The PUNCH BROTHERS
Tickets Purchased for 4/11/08 can be refunded at point of purchase or redeemed for the new date. punchbrothers.com At the conclusion of The Blind Leaving the Blind, the 40-minute, four-movement suite that is the heart of Punch Brothers Punchthe bands Nonesuch debutcomposer-singer-mandolin player Chris Thile conjures up the image of a heartbroken young man nursing his psychic wounds at a bar with his friends. In real life, the 26-year old Thile, who was recovering from his own tattered marriage as he developed the piece, took a more constructive approach, joining four of his own musical buddies to form a kind of super group/support group. The quintet did visit some bars along the way, but, more importantly, over the course of two years, these performers helped Thile to realize the most conceptually daring, emotionally cathartic work of an already impressive career.

Jazz Club: The Frank Vignola Quintet
music and nightlife
his new exciting sound is more than “HOT” jazz. It’s a melding of contemporary gypsy jazz, bluegrass, toe-tapping swing, blues and acoustic rock, and great renditions of old standards, all performed by some of the best players on the music scene today.
The Frank Vignola Quintet has shattered the barriers between popular music and traditional jazz to create an exciting new sound in acoustic string music. Their repertoire together with the amazing virtuosity puts them in a league by themselves, in essence creating a new genre of music. They are like no other band— mixing high-energy original material with new unique renditions of contemporary tunes by the likes of The Police, Frank Zappa, Black Sabbath and even Slayer. The quintet also taps into the standard songbook, creating unique interpretations of classic jazz tunes. Showing superior versatility, Vignola and the band also tackle new arrangements of Bach and Mozart. To quote the great mandolinist Jeff Pinkham, “This is the best string band on the planet”…

"Never Built Virginia" @ Library of VA
art/dance/theater
From Thomas Jefferson’s design of the Virginia State Capitol to Northern Virginia’s soaring post-modern structures of glass and steel, the commonwealth’s architectural triumphs are well-documented. But what of those that never made it beyond the drawing board?
Never Built Virginia will explore a variety of proposed architectural projects from around the commonwealth that remained unbuilt because the architecture was too radical, because funding collapsed, or because they lost favor with their patrons. Never Built Virginia offers examples of structures that never were and poses the question, “What if?”.
Cost: free.

Be among the first to explore the Virginia Center for Architecture's new exhibition Southern Exposure: Contemporary Regional Architecture. Enjoy light refreshments and hear a lecture by Raleigh, North Carolina-based architect Frank Harmon.
Harmon, who is featured in the exhibition, believes that a building should be unique to its surroundings. He discusses his regional approach to design and his interest in vernacular architecture - dwellings and farm buildings made of local materials and constructed sensibly.
Southern Exposure: Contemporary Regional Architecture takes you on a pictorial tour of some of the Sun Belt's most respected Modern architecture. Three-dimensional models help tell the story. These buildings aren't just designed to be beautiful - most of them have a decidedly green tint. Work by several of the architects highlight how the buildings where we live, work and learn can be designed to conserve natural resources and create healthier indoor spaces.
The exhibition also includes sever…
