“What are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages?”
A plane crashes on a deserted island—the only survivors, a group of schoolboys. Marooned and left to their own devices without adults or rules, their fragile sense of order begins to collapse. Richmond Ballet Presents "Coppélia" at CenterStage
Friday, February 10 - 7:00 PM
Saturday, February 11 - 2:00 PM
Saturday, February 11 - 7:00 PM
Sunday, February 12 - 2:00 PM
One of ballet's most charming stories, Coppélia is the comic tale of villagers Swanhilda, her beau Franz, and their encounter with the mysterious toy shop owner, Dr. Coppelius. Swanhilda and Franz's love story is interrupted when Franz turns his gaze to the beautiful girl sitting on Dr. Coppelius' balcony, but she doesn't seem to recognize his advances...in fact, she doesn't seem to move or talk at all because she is really a doll!
While a case of mistaken identity, zany dancing toys, and traditional folk dance ensue, a beautiful classical ballet emerges. Audiences will enjoy Frederic Franklin's lively choreography, all danced to the animated score by Leo Delibes, making this a perfect Valentine's present for the whole family!

"The Elephant Man" at Theatre VCU
The Elephant Man
What is normal? Do you feel different? John Merrick looks different. So grotesquely deformed that women faint in horror at the sight of him. In the world of 1880’s Victorian England’s freak shows Dr. Federick Treves rescues John Merrick, the Elephant Man. Brought to a hospital for analysis, Merrick is discovered to be a highly intelligent, sensitive and artistic man. Forever a prisoner of his malformed body, his horrific appearance in fact opens a door to a society he could only dream of. Based on fact, this Tony award-winning play, explores the notion of what and who is normal and how in a world of hypocrisy we may be persuaded to question our own quality of mercy.

Biohazard & Madball at Kingdom
Biohazard - http://www.last.fm/music/Biohazard
Biohazard was one of the first bands to regularly incorporate elements of both hip-hop and hardcore metal into their sound; since their lyrical fare dealt with the harshness of urban life and the resulting anger and frustration, which both genres of music have been known to address, the connection only made sense, especially in light of Anthrax's highly effective collaboration with Public Enemy on 1991's "Bring the Noise.".

UR ChinaFest Film: "Aftershock"
Aftershock
2010, China, 128 minutes.
Two natural disasters frame a story of a mother, her children and a painful decision that scars them forever in this grand-scale drama from China. In 1976, Li Yuanni (Xu Fan) is living in the city of Tangshan with her two children, seven year-old twins Fang Da and Fang Deng. The family's life is simple but full of joy until a massive earthquake levels the city and leaves a swath of destruction in its wake.
Amidst the wreckage, Li Yuanni discovers both Fang Da and Fang Deng are caught under a concrete slab, and if enough is broken to rescue one of the children, it would tip the balance and crush the other. Li Yuanni is asked which child should be saved, and she impulsively answers her son Fang Da. It's not until 2008 that the story of the mother and the daughter she lost comes full circle in the wake of another earthquake in Sichuan.
A massive commercial success in China, Tang Shan Da Di Zhen (aka Aftershock) made its North American debut at the 2010 Toronto Int…

DJ Williams Projekt at Cafe Diem
When you combine a tight groovin' rhythm section, sweet horn lines, and an amazing guitar player player who plays with honest to God soul, you've got yourself a solid winner when it comes to entertaining a crowd.
Complex or simple, Williams's lines become funk chops, picking up speed one minute and slamming a 180 on a dime the next with the "Projekt" backing it up all along and enhancing the ride. The band describes it as "a soulful ensemble of jazz, on a melodic R&B vibe, laced with a grooved down hip hop back beat." http://www.myspace.com/djwmusic.

Featuring more than 100 objects from the internationally renowned Egyptian collection of the British Museum, Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb explores the rituals of death and burial in ancient Egypt and uncovers mysteries that have shrouded mummies for millennia.
There are few civilizations that have aroused as much interest and intrigue as that of Ancient Egypt. With its distinctive artistic heritage and vast monumental remains, Egypt has held a continuing fascination for outsiders throughout time. And perhaps nothing has piqued people’s interest more than its funerary beliefs and practices.
In this riveting exhibition, we focus on the life and death of Nesperennub, a temple priest who lived 3,000 years ago. The exhibition opens with a 3-D f…

Brown's Battleground: Students, Segregationists, and the Struggle for Justice in Prince Edward County, Virginia at Library of Virginia
In 1954 after the decision of the U. S. Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education was announced, Prince Edward County shut down its school system rather than comply with the Supreme Court's ruling.
Hear author Jill Titus tell the story of the the seismic changes brought by the Court's decision and Virginia's move to resist desegregation. She illustrates the ways that ordinary people, black and white, battled, and continue to battle, over the role of public education in the United States. A book signing follows the talk.

“What are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages?”
A plane crashes on a deserted island—the only survivors, a group of schoolboys. Marooned and left to their own devices without adults or rules, their fragile sense of order begins to collapse. Read and analyzed by middle and high school students for decades, the book’s symbolism reveals much about human nature and raises the question, “How thin is the veneer of ‘civilization’?

The World/Inferno Friendship Society is a cabaret punk band from Brooklyn, New York. Its style merges punk, klezmer, and gospel, while its collective membership features horns, piano, guitar, a number of percussionists, as well as a variety of other instruments such as accordion, xylophone and orchestra bells.
This musical collective has historically had over 30 members, including former members of Dexys Midnight Runners. Usually one can expect to see about nine or ten members on-stage when they perform. The group is led by singer Jack Terricloth and guitarist Lucky Strano, who have been the most constant members throughout the group’s history. Terricloth is known for his pointed commentary during shows: his monologues have touched on politics, his transformation from the “old school,” and baiting of bouncers which usually end up with the band buying drinks for the whole staff.…

Who is hungry for some serious funk? Beast.... It's what's for dinner. Beast Wellington's infectious sound can only be described as Beastfunk meets Rhythm and Bruise and it's guaranteed to make you shake what your Mama gave ya!
Their sound reclaims the soulful excitement of your favorite horn bands from back in the day. Think Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago, Tower of Power and Steely Dan. Featuring sassy vocals backed by a fierce power trio and funky horn lines provided by the Femme Fatale Horns... that's right: a female horn section that is in fact quite deadly.

See the Tony Award-winning Broadway sensation that Newsweek calls “a landmark event in entertainment.” The New York Times says, “There is simply nothing else like it.”
Marvel at the breathtaking spectacle of animals brought to life by a cast of more than 40 actors. Wonder at the inspiration of award-winning director Julie Taymor, who created visual images for this show that you’ll remember forever.
Thrill to the pulsating rhythms of the African Pridelands and an unforgettable score including Elton John and Tim Rice’s Oscar-winning song “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and “Circle of Life…

Fifty-six dramatic black-and-white photographs taken by Alfred Wertheimer in 1956. The photographs feature Elvis Presley on the brink of international superstardom — including intimate images taken in Richmond.
Wertheimer was hired by RCA Victor in 1956 to shoot promotional images of Elvis, who had just been signed to record for the label. Wertheimer's images provide viewers today with a look at Elvis before he exploded onto the rock-and-roll scene. Wertheimer was given total access to Elvis on the road, backstage, in concert, in the recording studio and at home in Memphis. Shortly after Wertheimer had comp…

Friday, Feb. 17 and Sunday, Feb. 19
Burkina Faso, 2006, directed by Fanta Regina Nacro
100 min. NR
The Night of Truth, the first ever sub-Saharan African feature directed by a woman, is a powerful tale of the aftermath of a fictionalized civil war. After ten-years of fighting, the governing Nayaks and rebellious Bonande are determined to end the conflict. A celebration is arranged, but the formalities of the event boost tensions on both sides. The evening comes to a climax when someone beats drums'a sign of a call to arms¿during the festivities, which triggers feelings of distrust and fear. Within the shadow of genocide, the director astutely ends the film on a note of quiet optimism that suggests the possibility for peaceful co-existence.

The epic quest of finding one's identity might be one of the most universal themes found in the pursuit of art. The hopeless wandering replaced by the hope-filled breakthrough has been chronicled time and again in painting, sculpture, prose, poetry, film and, certainly, music.
The men who make up the rock band RED have been through those trials themselves. They've taken those experiences to heart, mixed them with a plethora of influences – be they observations on art they admire, or communications with fans they adore – and now burst forth with a dynamic new set of songs geared toward finding who we truly are, inside and out.

Dan Cummins at Funny Bone
In 2008, Dan performed on two episodes of NBC's "Last Comic Standing," including the semi-final in Las Vegas, where he did not move on despite receiving a partial standing ovation from the crowd. So, Dan wrote some better jokes. These jokes got him a full standing ovation when he taped his episode of Byron Allen's Comedy.TV in the spring of 2009 and another standing ovation at the end of his first one hour comedy special, "Crazy With a Capital F," filmed in front of a sold-out crowd at the Bing Crosby Theater in Spokane Washington. This special will premiere on Comedy Central in the spring of 2010.
These jokes also earned Dan his first appearance on the "Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien," where Conan plugged Dan's first nationally released CD, "Revenge is Near," available in stores and on iTunes through Warner Brothers Records. This CD was named one of the 10 best comedy CDs of 2009 by Punchlinemagazine.com, and made it to #7 on the Billboard Comedy Charts.

Kenyatta Hill - http://reverbnation.com/kenyattaculturehill
“Take My Hands is the first song on this album which is done by Kenyatta. Just like his father Kenyatta has a great vocal skill. The song is a nice sing-a-long with upbeat riddim. Mighty Race is almost as if Joseph himself song this tune, the song is definitely one of the gems on the album. Daddy is the first tune Kenyatta ever made, it's a tribute to his father and the greatest tune on the album.

A Good Natured Riot at Ashland Coffee & Tea
It’s difficult to find the right words to describe A Good Natured Riot, but that dosn’t stop their legions of fans from coming out to see them. These five acoustic musicians have come from all over the map – geographically and musically – to create a truly inspired sound. Some have described their it as folk-funk. Some say it’s “ecleticgrass” infused with some jazzy soul. But all seem to agree: it’s a lot of fun.The band performs with a variety of musical instruments – from guitars and fiddles to dobro and even a washboard to add to the fun. Punctuated by tight harmonies and percussive textures, A Good Natured Riot has found a unique groove all their own. To figure out your own description, you’ll just have to experience them for yourself.

Jackass Flats - http://www.jackass-flats.com/
There's no shortage of bluegrass music in the Mountain State, but Jackass Flats, from Richmond, Va. has drawn a sizable fan base for it's unique take on the art form. The group -- four, five or six men, depending on the lineup, and named the 2002 Virginia State Bluegrass Champions -- focuses on plucky, high-energy renditions of its own tunes and traditional pieces. You can get a taste of the group's style, and see why fans love these guys in concert, on their debut, self-titled CD, "Jackass Flats." Dan Cummins at Funny Bone

UR Int'l Film Series: "The Night of Truth (La Nuit de la Vérité)"
Friday, Feb. 17 and Sunday, Feb. 19
Burkina Faso, 2006, directed by Fanta Regina Nacro
100 min. NR
The Night of Truth, the first ever sub-Saharan African feature directed by a woman, is a powerful tale of the aftermath of a fictionalized civil war. After ten-years of fighting, the governing Nayaks and rebellious Bonande are determined to end the conflict. A celebration is arranged, but the formalities of the event boost tensions on both sides. The evening comes to a climax when someone beats drums'a sign of a call to arms during the festivities, which triggers feelings of distrust and fear. Within the shadow of genocide, the director astutely ends the film on a note of quiet optimism that suggests the possibility for peaceful co-existence.
Friday showings are at 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday showings are at 7:30 p.m. The films are shown in the original language with English subtitles. Free and open to the public.
