Pilchuck Audubon Society July Program Meeting

Marysville Globe Pilchuck Audubon Society’s July Program Meeting will be presented by Tom Virzi of Ecostudies Institute on “Assessing Effects of Estuary Restoration Projects on Bird Populations”. In 2016, Ecostudies Institute began a multi-year monitoring program investigating the response of bird populations to estuary restoration projects at Leque Island and Fir Island Farm. Both sites are former estuarine wetlands that were diked in the late-1800s, and restoration is currently planned by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to return habitat to more natural conditions. Pre-restoration monitoring of bird populations (including shorebirds, wading birds, land birds and raptors) began in winter 2016 to obtain baseline data for comparison. Our main goals include: 1) quantifying the numerical response in species abundance by breeding and wintering birds at each restoration site, and 2) investigating changes in shorebird abundance and distribution across the greater Skagit-Stillaguamish estuary. Goatalympics

The Goatalympics is not your typical livestock event. Rather than focus on conformation and production, as seen at a typical County Fair, the Goatalympics is all about having fun with pet goats. It’s a chance for people to show off their ruminants’ skills, in events ranging from obstacle courses and races to costume and stall decorating. Arrive early, stay all day, enjoy the several food trucks and don't miss the widest goat or the longest ears contests! The mega-raffle and silent auction gets bigger every year. Of course, there will be adorable, adoptable goats for people to meet. For spectator info or to register your goat athlete visit http://www.goatalympics.org. Category: Arts & entertainment. Benefit. FHC Presents ‘Turning Into The Wind: The Evolution of American Fast Carriers’

First seen as something of a novelty, the aircraft carrier evolved into the premier capital ship for the world's navies. The evolution from experimental platform to premier fighting ship was neither an easy nor straight path. An impressive array of questions and problems had to be solved before the aircraft carrier could join the fleet. Despite these obstacles, the United States Navy was one of the leaders in the development of naval aviation. It was the first service to prove the ability of an aircraft to take off from and land on a naval vessel in the years before the First World War. Those small beginnings followed by more than a decade of experimentation eventually led to the United States becoming the preeminent aircraft carrier operator in the world by late-1943. Professor McHale will discuss the evolution of American aircraft carriers: from their inception with the USS Langley (CV-1) through the Interwar Years and World War II, and ultimately the establishment of the Fast Carrier Task Force. FHC Presents ‘Kiska - The Japanese Occupation of an Alaskan Island’

Alaska’s windswept Aleutian Island chain arcs for over a thousand miles toward Asia from the Alaska Peninsula. In this remote and hostile archipelago is Kiska Island, an uninhabited sub-arctic speck in the tempestuous Bering Sea. In June of 1942 Imperial Japanese forces occupied the remote Aleutian islands of Kiska and Attu in this little-known occupation of North American territory. For thirteen months the Japanese maintained a garrison of 8000 troops on Kiska and then quickly abandoned the island leaving behind all manner of equipment and artifacts. Author Brendan Coyle has made two sojourns to the Aleutians and spent 51 days camped on Kiska, searching out and photographing the tunnels, weapons, wrecks and personal effects of this brief and obscure battle of the Pacific war.
