KITSAP AUDUBON SOCIETY MEETING

Program: 40 years of Change ~ Black Guillemots in a Warming & Melting Arctic. Presented by George Divoky. The Black Guillemot is a year round resident of the Arctic and one of the few seabirds dependent on the rapidly decreasing arctic sea ice. He has studied guillemots annually on Cooper Island of northern Alaska since 1975 and has documented how increasing temperatures and decreasing snow and ice have affected the species. After an initial increase in numbers in the 1970’s & 1980’s his study colony has experienced a decline in numbers, from 200 to 100 breeding pairs. Nesting success has declined due to decrease in the guillemot’s prey and increases in nest predators, primarily polar bears. Continuing work at the colony is only possible due to the provision of bear proof nest sites. Research deals with a range of issues relating to offshore development, oil spill damage and restoration and the effects of climate change. Steptember

Hi, My name is Kelly and I am a mother of a son with Cerebral Palsy and one of the founders of The Determined Parents Foundation. We are asking our community to help us support kids and adults living with disabilities by joining the charity event Steptember (www.steptembernw.org)! For the month of September we are challenging teams of 4 to walk, run or roll 10,000 "steps" a day while raising funds and awareness for people living with disabilities. All proceeds go to Provail (www.provail.org) and The Determined Parents Foundation (www.thedeterminedparentsfoundation.org) to help people with special needs recieve the therapies that they desperately need. Our hope is to engage our community to come together and get active while supporting those who can't. We are ending Steptember with an "awareness climb" to the summit of Mt. Rainier that will be completed by myself and my co-founder of The Determined Parents Foundation. Thank you for your time and please let me know if you have any questions.
