Opera Preview: Tales of Hoffman

By the mid-1870s Jacques Offenbach’s career as “The King of Operetta” was over. In addition he was ill and getting worse. Yet he wanted to write a full-length “real opera” before he died. The result was The Tales of Hoffman, a 3 Act fantasy opera based on stories of E.T.A. Hoffmann. Offenbach lavished some of the most beautiful and imaginative melodies he ever wrote on Olympia, the “Mechanical Doll” or Antonia, the consumptive soprano who sings herself to death, or the basso-devil who uses a magic diamond to steal the souls of his victims. Sadly, Hoffman died four months before the first performance of his Tales of Hoffman in 1881 and did not live to see its world-wide success which continues to this day. Aaina - South Asian Women's Festival 2014

Tasveer is proud to present the 9th Aaina, a South Asian Women's festival at the Seattle Asian Art Museum, April 25 – 27, 2014. Together they are leading 12 women through a creative process that spans half a year to craft their stories and get ready for the stage. For nine years, YKB has sparked dialogue about shame, sex, abuse, identity and love. Initially it pushed the boundaries of the local South Asian community, many of whom shy away from addressing these issues. Now, nearly a decade later, it’s a celebrated event that sells out every year. This year’s guest of honor is newly-elected council member Kshama Sawant, who will attend the Saturday night perfor… Category: Arts & Entertainment. Family. Theater. Audience: Teens. The Art of the Jitterbug

Attention hep cats! Big band jazz grew up in the nightclubs and dance halls of New York and Chicago as high-energy dance music. The zenith of jazz dancing was the jitterbug, igniting the wild enthusiasm of dance-crazed youth in the 1930s. This concert features the hottest hits from the world's greatest dance bands--Chick Webb, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmie Lunceford, Fletcher Henderson, and Benny Goodman. Two award-winning pairs of dancers will kick up their heels on stage alongside SRJO to showcase the jitterbug and other swingin' dance styles of early jazz (such as the Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing and the Balboa). Selections include Basie's "Swingin' the Blues," Goodman's "Swing Time in the Rockies" and Henderson's "Big John's Special." Join us in celebration of the dance music that swept the nation—we guarantee you won’t be able to resist tapping your toes and dancing in your seat!
