A Film and Discussion About Restorative Justice

Presented by ReelTime: Shining a Light on Social Issues. Juveniles in the United States are entering the justice system in shocking numbers, and more than half are likely to commit crimes when they come out. Is there a better way to deal with conflict? In New Zealand, the indigenous Mâori culture provides a model that incorporates "restorative justice" principles, focusing on rehabilitation rather than punishment. In Baltimore, Maryland, an organization has adopted these principles, bringing victims and offenders together for conferences rather than going to court. Join us for the film Fixing Juvie Justice, followed by an open conversation about issues related to alternative ways to resolve disputes and the consequences of failing to do so. Creation Astronomy Class

Many modern astronomers have adopted a worldview that is in stark contrast to the Bible. Holding to a materialistic philosophy, they seek to explain the origin of the cosmos and the celestial bodies through purely natural processes. Creation astronomers, which includes many of the fathers of astronomy, such as Nicolas Copernicus and Sir Isaac Newton, look to the Word of God for special understanding. This class provides a general introduction to astronomy from the Biblical worldview (“creation astronomy”). The origin and age of the cosmos and the celestial bodies are discussed, and important evidence of fine-tuning is illustrated.

Opera Preview: Ariadne auf Naxos

Presented by Norm Hollingshead. With Ariadne Auf Naxos in 1916 Richard Strauss and his librettist, Hugo von Hofmannstahl followed up on the success of their Der Rosenkavalier (1911) with an opera with a crazy plot. Who would think of forcing a comic troupe of "Commedia del'Arte" performers and a group of "opera seria" singers to perform their two very different works simultaneously. Yet, amazingly, instead of a shambles, this enforced collaboration emerges as both touching and hilarious, thanks to some of the most delicious music Strauss ever wrote. Don't miss it.
