Norm Stamper Lecture
Norm Stamper Ph.D. retired Seattle Police Chief, will be speaking at The Orcas Center Wednesday, May 22nd, 5:30pm. The general topic will be “Community Policing in the 21st Century” focusing on The War on Drugs, Guns and Gun Violence, and Domestic Drone Use.
Now retired and living on Orcas, Mr. Stamper’s professional experience makes him uniquely qualified to speak on these subjects. While serving as the Chief of Police for the City of Seattle, he implemented a major restructuring of the organization, created a Domestic Violence program, developed numerous community advisory councils and outreach programs, and created new bureaus of Professional Responsibility, Community Policing, and Family and Youth Protection.
He previously served as the Executive Assistant Police Chief for the City of San Diego, among other significant positions with that city. Mr. Stamper holds a Ph.D. in Leadership and Human Behavior, Masters in Criminal Justice Administration, an Associate Degree in Police Science and is a…

Professional juror, Barbara Matilsky, curator of the Whatcom Museum, has brought 70 Women Painters of Washington members together to create an outstanding exhibition featuring a wide variety of quality art. The first of five venues for this presentation of artistic excellence will be the Schack Art Center, 2921 Hoyt Avenue, Everett, Washington.
This traveling exhibition will showcase a strong, diversified array of excellent paintings that include the full spectrum of mediums. The quality of the work and the different styles suggests the essence of this historical exhibition.

2013 Juried Artist Series: On The Edge
Allied Arts of Whatcom County kicks off the 2013 Juried Artist Series with On the Edge featuring work from Andy Siebert, Ann Marie Cooper, Chris Shreve, Doug Forrest and Taj Williams. The opening reception will be held during the Downtown Art Walk, Friday, June, 7th from 6pm to 9pm.
On The Edge will be an exhibit of bold, loud colors and patterns in a variety of media all working together in a harmonious display of works that push the envelope. Painting, drawing, and clay are all tools for the expression of the artists.

Kidney Health Fest for African American Families
Northwest Kidney Centers will hold its 11th annual Kidney Health Fest for African American Families on Saturday, June 22, 2013. The free event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Van Asselt Elementary (formerly the African American Academy), 8311 Beacon Ave. S. in Seattle, on Metro Route 106. Everyone is welcome to attend. The fest will feature free health screenings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and an educational program from 10 a.m. to noon with Chris B. Bennett of KRIZ/KZIZ Radio as emcee. Dan and Pat Howard, owners of Howard/Mandville Gallery, are celebrating 23 years as one of the premier dealers of fine art in the Puget Sound region. The gallery is known to collectors throughout the region and beyond for discovering exciting emerging talent as well as showcasing nationally acclaimed artists. This year’s show will feature several new works by each of the gallery’s roster of more than 50 artists and will open with a preview reception on Friday, June 7th from 6-8pm and run through July 7th.

Polish Festival returns to Seattle Center
Save-the-date: Saturday, July 13, 2013 to celebrate Polish culture and traditions
Based on an overwhelming success of last year’s festival, the vibrant Polish-American community is proud to present their second annual festival at Seattle Center. This summer’s event on July 13, 2013 will celebrate Polish cultural traditions and contemporary achievements with wide audiences of the Pacific Northwest.
The program features live performances of Polish folk groups, piano and jazz artists, modern dance, poster art exhibit, cultural workshops, food demos, children’s activities and participatory dance. Presented this year again will be Folk Fashion Show with regionally inspired costumes from Poland. Booths will showcase Polish glass art, hand-crafted pottery from Boleslawiec, crystal, jewelry, and cut-out paper art, as well as information about local Polish-American community organizations and travel to Poland for business and pleasure. Cascade Writers Conference
Cascade Writers Workshop is a 4-day event in scenic Portland, OR, specializing in science fiction and fantasy writing. Guest speakers include agent Cameron McClure, editor Claire Eddy, publisher Patrick Swenson, editor and author Jennifer Brozek, publicist Jaym Gates and authors including Ken Scholes, J.A. Pitts, Nisi Shawl, Spencer Ellsworth and more.
The weekend includes lectures and panels with editors, agents, and professionals on topics ranging from manuscript basics to GLBTQ characters in literature. The workshop portion of the event provides Milford-style critique sessions with peers and professionals. One-on-one discussions with guest speakers and panelists will include agent pitch sessions for those interested.

Allied Arts Juried Artist Series: As Above, So Below
As Above, So Below is an exhibit of art works that explore our relationship with the world. Jayme Curley creates ceramic sculptures of the human form, particularly focusing on the face. Joe Jowdy uses lighting in his photography to capture unique images of Paris. Steve Cunningham creates bright, vivid pieces by using an oxy-acetylene torch on machined steel. Tore Ofteness shows some of Europe’s most beautiful areas through unique camera angles and lighting.
In addition, the Allied Arts Gallery will also host Liane Redpath Worlund in their Inside the Box Series. Liane creates jewelry using various stones, paints and metals.

Daniel Wilkins is coming to Emerald Ballet Academy for Session 6 (August 12-16) of Summer Intensive. Mr. Wilkins is the Founder and Producing Artistic Director of DASSdance, a bi-coastal company with homes in Seattle and New York. He formed DASSdance in 1996, with the intention of pushing the "athletic and architectural limits of dance" with daring movement and creative collaborations.
Mr. Wilkins will teach a daily modern class and choreograph a new work. This is an exciting opportunity for pre-professional dancers to share studio time with this fun and innovative choreographer!
