Latin Jazz Intensive

For several years, Jazz Port Townsend workshop attendees have asked for a Latin Jazz workshop to learn more about the special rhythmic and stylistic elements of this music. Now we are happy to announce a Latin Jazz Intensive led by Berklee School of Music faculty member Oscar Stagnaro, an internationally known Latin Jazz educator and virtuoso bassist who has performed and recorded with Paquito D’Rivera, David Sanchez, Chucho Valdez, Ray Baretto and many more Latin greats. At the Intensive you will learn how to play and use a variety of Latin rhythms including Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Caribbean as well as developing your improvisation skills in the Latin idiom. You’ll perform in a combo with expert coaching along with public performance opportunities over the weekend, including playing for Centrum’s Salsa Dance intensive running concurrently with this workshop. (You’ll also have an opportunity to learn some dance steps, which will greatly help your understanding of the rhythms!). Thursday, March 18, 2010 – Sunday, March 21, 2010. various. For more info visit www.centrum.org.

Salsa Dance Intensive

Join us for our first-ever Salsa Dance Intensive, running concurrently with our Latin Jazz Intensive. Centrum is joining forces with the Century Ballroom in Seattle and the Madrona MindBody Institute in Port Townsend to bring together a great group of dance faculty who will help you expand your skills. We will offer Salsa classes On1 and On2 for both intermediate and advanced dancers. Roger Chen will teach On2 while the Century Ballroom instructors will teach On1. Each day will start with a footwork and styling class for all levels. Thursday, March 18, 2010 – Sunday, March 21, 2010. various. For more info visit www.centrum.org.

Blue Heron Tales, Texts, & Theater

During Tales, Texts & Theater, the entire Seventh Grade student body of Port Townsend's Blue Heron Middle School will work with vital, contemporary artists in a variety of disciplines—creative writing, theatrical movement, music, and visual art—for a weeklong immersion in creativity. The lineup of performing, visual, and literary artist-faculty engages and guides young artists in the world of arts and ideas, creative risk-taking, and professional practices. Each day is divided into four workshop sessions. Blue Heron 7th grade students and teachers experience the whole range of workshop offerings. Monday, March 29, 2010 – Friday, April 2, 2010. various. Choro Intensive

Join Mike Marshall (mandolin) and Choro Famoso, Colin Walker (six- and seven-string cavanquinho guitar), Andy Connell (clarinet and saxophone), and Brian Rice (pandeiro and other Brazilian percussion instruments) in this intensive workshop. Mike Marshall and Choro Famoso taught at a similar Centrum event in 2007, and ever since people have been asking “how soon can you get them back?!” Choro is a great way for both jazz and classically oriented instrumentalists to meet on common ground. There are written charts with lovely and lively melodies accessible to any competent player. There’s also room for improvisation, and in a vein that’s a great way for classical musicians to expand their skills in this. The thirty-person workshop is open to all instruments (hand percussion, rather than drum set). “There will be people of different backgrounds and abilities and we’ll be sure to match you up!” Marshall says. Thursday, April 22, 2010 – Sunday, April 25, 2010. various. For more info visit www.centrum.org.

Water World (Grades 5-6)

Water World, a collaboration between Centrum and the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, is a full-immersion arts and science experience. The week is filled with activities and projects that expand and enhance elementary students’ experience of the marine world through the lenses of both science and art. In collaboration with artists, scientists, and peers from across the state, students integrate scientific investigations with creative writing, dance, and visual art. The result is a holistic and multi-faceted learning experience. Sunday, May 2, 2010 – Friday, May 7, 2010. various. For more info visit www.centrum.org.
