Suffer for Beauty: A Revealing Look at Women's History Through Undergarments
Visual arts
Throughout history, society has placed certain expectations on how women should look. "Suffer for Beauty: A Revealing Look at Women's History Through Undergarments" is an historical examination of how women have responded to – and suffered from – ever-changing societal norms of beauty and the undergarments that served as the foundation for achieving the look of their time. The exhibit opens Aug. 12 and runs through Nov. 8.
"Suffer for Beauty" starts with bustles of the 1870s/1880s accentuating a woman's derriere, waist and bosom, and moves to the crushing corsets and Rational Dress Movement of the late 19th century.
Garments then progress to the early 1900s and World War I, the freeing 1920s, the economical 1930s and the masculine influences in women's wear that occurred when women filled men's factory jobs during World War II. The exhibit concludes with Christian Dior's "New Look" in the late 1940s.

Lord of the Dance
Theater/Shows
Described by the New York Post as "fascinating, rewarding and above all, entertaining," and by the Los Angeles Times as "a showpiece extravaganza," Lord of the Dance is a mesmerizing blend of traditional and modern Celtic music and dance. The story is based upon mythical Irish folklore as Don Dorcha, Lord of Darkness, challenges the ethereal lord of light, the Lord of the Dance. Battle lines are drawn, passions ignite and a love story fueled by the dramatic leaps and turns of dancers’ bodies begins to build against a backdrop of Celtic rhythm. The action is played out over 21 scenes on a grand scale of precision dancing, dramatic music, colorful costumes and state-of-the-art staging and lighting.

Movie Night Presenting "Broken Limbs"
Environment
Join us on Saturday, November 7 at 7:00 pm for a showing of the movie “Broken Limbs”. This story takes place in our own backyard - Wenatchee, Washington, the "Apple Capital of the World". This pastoral valley in the heart of the Northwest prospered for nearly a century as home to the famed Washington apple. But the good times have vanished. Apple orchardists by the thousands are going out of business and thousands more await the dreaded letter from the bank, announcing the end of their livelihoods and a uniquely American way of life.
After his own father receives just such a letter, filmmaker Guy Evans sets out on a journey to find out what went wrong here in this natural Garden of Eden. Over the course of filming, Evans witnesses small farmers struggling to compete against the Goliaths that populate today's global economy, only to be ultimately forced off their land.
Regular museum admission is $2 adults, $1 seniors/children and free on Wednesdays.

Devo with special guest: Reggie Watts
Music
Formed in Akron, OH in 1974 as a multi-media experiment, DEVO caught the attention of such pop music luminaries as Iggy Pop, David Bowie, and Neil Young, whose support led to a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records. The label released the Brian Eno-produced Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! in 1978, followed by Duty Now for the Future in 1979. In 1980, DEVO released its commercial breakthrough album Freedom of Choice, which featured the timeless Top 20 hit “Whip It,” followed by 1981’s New Traditionalists, 1982’s Oh, No! It’s Devo, and 1984’s Shout, its last album for Warner Bros. Records. After releasing 1988’s Total Devo and 1990’s Smooth Noodle Mapson Enigma Records, the band went on hiatus.
Now original members Gerald Casale, Bob Casale, Mark Mothersbaugh, and Bob Mothersbaugh are back with drummer Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, Guns N’ Roses).

They will perform Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! on November 8th and Freedom of Choice on November 9th.

Marking Time: Voyage to Vietnam
Visual arts
Graffiti has long been a form of artistic or political expression; some call it art, some call it vandalism. But archeologists and art historians find it useful to provide context and insight into the minds of those who inscribe personal messages in public places. View an original sleeping station with graffiti-inscribed canvases, and personal stories of young Americans traveling to the Vietnam War in Marking Time: Voyage to Vietnam. Visit us online for more information and specific exhibit hours. www.washingtonhistory.org Organized by the Vietnam Graffiti Project, in partnership with the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.
