This is bigger than Democrats vs. Republicans. One vision fueled the Obama movement in 2007-08 and emphasizes an inclusive America that transcends barriers of race, sexuality, religion, and other traditional identity markers. 2011-12 Graduate School Public Lectures: Chris Lintott

Academic What to Do With 500,000 Scientists Scientists and researchers in disciplines from astrophysics to zoology are facing a common problem: rather than pouring over one or two photographic plates, astronomers have access to surveys of millions of galaxies; rather than spending six months in the field, ecologists can carpet a forest with sensors and webcams. This flood of data makes new forms of science possible, but it also risks overwhelming researchers entirely. "Citizen science" projects solve this problem by recruiting hundreds of thousands of volunteers to make a meaningful contribution to research. In this lecture, Chris Lintott will explain how his team's citizen science efforts grew from humble beginnings in an Oxford pub to enabling almost half a million volunteers to provide 250 million classifications, sorting galaxies (www.galaxyzoo.org), discovering planets (www.planethunters.org) and even exploring lost Greek texts (www.ancientlives.org). Phone RSVP: 1-800-AUW-ALUM or (206) 543-0540. Host(s): UW Alumni Association. Cost: FREE. Advance registration is recommended (available soon). Info: UW Alumni Association, 206-543-0540 or 1-800-AUW-ALUM. Tuesday, April 17, 2012, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM. Kane Hall, Room 130 UW Seattle. For more info visit www.grad.washington.edu.
