Two one-act operas by Giacomo Puccini sung in Italian with English supertitles.
Il tabarro (The Cloak) is filled with the ecstasy of love, then terror, rage, and finally vengeance. Innovative and daring, the orchestra evokes the ambiance of the Parisian waterfront, tugboats, crowds and workers and lovers going by. The lead singers are layered above, making this perhaps Puccini’s most modern and complex work. Michele’s wife, Giorgetta, refuses her husband and plays a dangerous game of infidelity with her lover, Luigi. Michele's paranoia and melancholy turn to fury, while she is torn by lust for her lover and remorse. The conclusion is both gritty and heartbreaking.
In Gianni Schicchi, Puccini creates a compelling study of envy and avarice, but departs from sentiment and tragedy to a lighter side of the art. Gianni Schicchi takes place in 1299 in Florence, in the bedroom of Buoso Donati, who has just died. Vashon Horse Expo - The Day of the Horse is a fundraiser for the equestrian facilities at Paradise Ridge Park. It is being sponsored by the Vashon Maury Horse Association with Emily Wigley being the main organizer. It is June 1, 2013 from 9-5. it will entail horse related demonstrations, clinics, entertainment, food, silent auction, and hopefully pony rides! Kidney Health Fest for African American Families
Northwest Kidney Centers will hold its 11th annual Kidney Health Fest for African American Families on Saturday, June 22, 2013. The free event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Van Asselt Elementary (formerly the African American Academy), 8311 Beacon Ave. S. in Seattle, on Metro Route 106. Everyone is welcome to attend. The fest will feature free health screenings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and an educational program from 10 a.m. to noon with Chris B. Bennett of KRIZ/KZIZ Radio as emcee. The day also includes healthy food made by local celebrity chefs, music by Comfort Food and PNW Drum Line, exhibits, and a chance to win prizes. Polish Festival returns to Seattle Center
Save-the-date: Saturday, July 13, 2013 to celebrate Polish culture and traditions
Based on an overwhelming success of last year’s festival, the vibrant Polish-American community is proud to present their second annual festival at Seattle Center. This summer’s event on July 13, 2013 will celebrate Polish cultural traditions and contemporary achievements with wide audiences of the Pacific Northwest.
The program features live performances of Polish folk groups, piano and jazz artists, modern dance, poster art exhibit, cultural workshops, food demos, children’s activities and participatory dance. Presented this year again will be Folk Fashion Show with regionally inspired costumes from Poland. Booths will showcase Polish glass art, hand-crafted pottery from Boleslawiec, crystal, jewelry, and cut-out paper art, as well as information about local Polish-American community organizations and travel to Poland for business and pleasure.
