Overview
Europe'\;s hous ing crisis is real\, but who'\;s responsible for solving it?
For y ounger people across Europe\, finding somewhere affordable to live has b ecome one of the defining challenges of our time. Economist Ronan Lyons argues that the answer lies not in choosing between the market and the s tate\, but in encouraging both to pull in the same direction. In Europe \, that idea of market and state as allies\, not rivals\, is a core value . In practice\, it'\;s proving harder to deliver. Can it be done?


About the Speaker
Ronan Lyo ns is Associate Professor in Economics at Trinity College Dublin. His re search focuses on housing markets\, urban economics and economic history . He is a consultant to the IMF on residential property prices\, a frequ ent contributor to national and international media on Irish housing and the broader economy\, and the author of the quarterly Daft.ie Reports. He was a member of Ireland'\;s 2022-2023 Housing Commission\, advisin g government on housing policy.

Two of Europe’\;s founding value s\, but are they as connected as we think?
Respect for human rights a nd equality are central to what the EU stands for. Most of us assume the two go hand in hand. But the relationship\, it turns out\, is less stra ightforward than it appears.
Join Professor Adina Preda from the Depa rtment of Philosophy as she examines the link between these two values a nd makes the case for putting equality at the heart of how we think abou t human rights.


Adina Preda  \;is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Trinity College Dublin an d founding director of the Trinity Centre for Justice and Values. Her re search sits at the intersection of political philosophy and human rights theory. She holds a PhD in political philosophy from the University of Manchester and has held positions at the University of Montreal\, the Ca tholic University of Louvain and University College Dublin. Europe has see n wave after wave of protest in recent years. But what do these movement s actually have in common?

From anti-austerity campaigns to anti- lockdown demonstrations\, these movements share one thing: a deep distru st of political institutions. But distrust can pull in very different di rections. \;
Sociologist Larissa Meier examines what connects the se movements and what divides them. While some push toward more open and democratic politics\, others pull toward exclusion and authoritarianism . What does that tell us about the state of democracy in Europe today?

About the Speaker

Larissa Meier \;is Assistant Professo r in Conflict Sociology at Trinity College Dublin. Her research explores the causes and consequences of contemporary political conflicts\, with a particular focus on social movements\, political violence and civil re sistance. She holds a PhD in Political Science and Sociology from the Sc uola Normale Superiore in Florence and has held positions at Bielefeld U niversity in Germany. She has also worked for international organisation s including the OSCE and UNDP\, and her work has been published in Socia l Problems\, Government &\; Opposition and Perspectives on Politics. Environmental security is a priority of t he Irish Presidency of the EU with climate and biodiversity challenges r ecognised as central to strengthening economic\, health and food securit y. \;

A key message of the landmark IPBES publication on Busi ness and Biodiversity (2026) is that all businesses depend on and impact biodiversity and can be agents of positive change.
