Overview
Europe's housing crisis is real, but who's responsible for solving it?
For younger people across Europe, finding somewhere affordable to live has become one of the defining challenges of our time. Economist Ronan Lyons argues that the answer lies not in choosing between the market and the state, but in encouraging both to pull in the same direction. In Europe, that idea of market and state as allies, not rivals, is a core value. In practice, it's proving harder to deliver. Can it be done?

About the Speaker
Ronan Lyons is Associate Professor in Economics at Trinity College Dublin. His research focuses on housing markets, urban economics and economic history. He is a consultant to the IMF on residential property prices, a frequent contributor to national and international media on Irish housing and the broader economy, and the author of the quarterly Daft.ie Reports. He was a member of Ireland's 2022-2023 Housing Commission, advising government on housing policy.

This lecture is one of four free public talks in the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy's autumn series, marking Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the EU. Each evening brings a different discipline - Philosophy, Economics, Sociology, and Political Science - to bear on the same question: what values and choices will shape Europe's future?

The event will explore the role of libraries, knowledge and open dialogue in supporting democratic societies, reflecting Trinity's commitment to academic freedom, civic engagement and informed public debate.
The Library, in collaboration with the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts & Humanities Research Institute, is hosting the event on Friday 25th September, 5 pm-7 pm. The event forms part of the Trinity Arts & Humanities Research Festival and also takes place on European Researchers’ Night. This is the inaugural event as part of a ‘Libraries for Democracy’ series.

Two of Europe’s founding values, but are they as connected as we think?
Respect for human rights and equality are central to what the EU stands for. Most of us assume the two go hand in hand. But the relationship, it turns out, is less straightforward than it appears.
Join Professor Adina Preda from the Department of Philosophy as she examines the link between these two values and makes the case for putting equality at the heart of how we think about human rights.

Adina Preda is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Trinity College Dublin and founding director of the Trinity Centre for Justice and Values. Her research sits at the intersection of political philosophy and human rights theory. She holds a PhD in political philosophy from the University of Manchester and has held positions at the University of Montreal, the Catholic University of Louvain and University College Dublin. She was awarded a European Research Council Consolidator Grant for her project on rights and egalitarianism.

Europe values and choices lecture series | Europe’s Hard Choices: Transatlantic Security in the Trump Era

For eight decades, Europe’s security rested on a transatlantic bargain. That assumption no longer holds.
The war in Ukraine grinds on. The second Trump administration has cast serious doubt over US commitments that have underpinned European defence since 1949. And European countries are being asked to make choices about their own security that they haven’t had to face in living memory, about alliances, deterrence, and what European defence actually means without US backing.
Join political scientists Dr Jesse Dillon Savage and Dr Thomas Chadefaux as they explore where things are likely to head in the short to medium term, and what it all means for a small, militarily non-aligned state like Ireland.

About the Speakers

Jesse Dillon Savage is Associate Professor in Political Science at Trinity College Dublin and a Fellow of Trinity College. His research focuses on international relations, conflict and civil-military relations.
Thomas Chadefaux is Professor of Political Science at Trinity College Dublin. His research focuses on the causes of interstate conflict and how to predict them, drawing on large-scale data sources including newspapers, satellite images and financial markets to identify early warning signals for war. He holds a PhD from the University of Michigan and has held positions at the University of Rochester and ETH Zurich.

Europe values and choices lecture series | Crisis, Distrust and The New Face of Protest in Europe

Europe has seen wave after wave of protest in recent years. But what do these movements actually have in common?

From anti-austerity campaigns to anti-lockdown demonstrations, these movements share one thing: a deep distrust of political institutions. But distrust can pull in very different directions.
Sociologist Larissa Meier examines what connects these movements and what divides them. While some push toward more open and democratic politics, others pull toward exclusion and authoritarianism. What does that tell us about the state of democracy in Europe today?

About the Speaker

Larissa Meier is Assistant Professor in Conflict Sociology at Trinity College Dublin. Her research explores the causes and consequences of contemporary political conflicts, with a particular focus on social movements, political violence and civil resistance. She holds a PhD in Political Science and Sociology from the Scuola Normale Superiore in Florence and has held positions at Bielefeld University in Germany. She has also worked for international organisations including the OSCE and UNDP, and her work has been published in Social Problems, Government & Opposition and Perspectives on Politics.

'Business + Nature: The Imperative for Action' - an Associated Event of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Environmental security is a priority of the Irish Presidency of the EU with climate and biodiversity challenges recognised as central to strengthening economic, health and food security.

A key message of the landmark IPBES publication on Business and Biodiversity (2026) is that all businesses depend on and impact biodiversity and can be agents of positive change.
