How
far would you go for the American dream? \;
A floundering second
-generation teenager growing up in the Bush-era Atlanta suburbs\, Neil N
arayan is funny and smart but struggles to bear the weight of expectatio
ns of his family and their Asian American enclave. He tries to want thei
r version of success\, but mostly\, Neil just wants his neighbor across
the cul-de-sac\, Anita Dayal. When he discovers that Anita is the benefi
ciary of an ancient\, alchemical potion made from stolen gold—\;a &
#8220\;lemonade”\; that harnesses the ambition of the gold’\;s
original owner—\;Neil sees his chance to get ahead. But events spi
ral into a tragedy that rips their community apart. Years later in the B
ay Area\, Neil still bristles against his community'\;s expectations&
#8212\;and finds he might need one more hit of that lemonade\, no matter
the cost. \;
Join author and Emory Creative and Fiction Writ
ing Fellow\, Sanjena Sathian\, for a discussion of Gold Diggers
\, a magical realist coming-of-age story that skewers the model minority
myth and investigation into what is required to make it in America.
0\;
\;
“\;Gold Diggers is a delightful concoction of
the best of South Asia’\;s literary offerings\, reminiscent of Han
if Kureishi’\;s irreverent humour in The Buddha of Suburbia and\, m
ore recently\, the magic realism of Mohsin Hamid’\;s Exit West and
Salman Rushdie’\;s work. . .. Sathian brings a golden touch to the
21st-century Indian American novel—\;stretching it through a reimag
ining of history and mythology\, yet holding it close to her chest.̶
1\; —\;Sana Goyal\, The Guardian \;
\;
R
20\;Crackles with sarcasm and wit . . . a dazzling tale. Local readers w
ill delight in Sathian’\;s artful depiction of metro Atlanta circa
2006\, as well as her take on the struggles of being a member of a minor
ity community during the post-9/11 Bush era.”\; —\;Anjali

An absolute corker of hard-nosed techno-horror\, The
Terminator propelled its director and star into Hollywood’\;s
stratosphere and made “\;Skynet”\; a shorthand for out-of-con
trol AI capable of enslaving or eradicating humankind. Arnold Schwarzene
gger plays the iconic and notoriously laconic (he has only 100 words of
dialog) role of a cybernetic assassin sent back in time by the ruling ma
chines from the far-flung future of 2029 to kill Sarah Conner (Linda Ham
ilton)\, who will give birth to the boy who will grow up to be the leade
r of the human resistance movement. Kyle (Michael Biehn) is the human re
bel fighter tasked with saving Sarah. A chase movie par excellence
em>\, the film not only spawned five sequels\, but instantiates the AI a
rms race currently being discussed by in boardrooms and war rooms around
the world. “\;It’\;s not just about what AI gets invented. It
’\;s about who applies it first\,”\; Christopher Kirchhoff\, a
former director of strategic planning for the National Security Council
who helped run the Pentagon’\;s Silicon Valley office\, warned las
t year. Marked by James Cameron’\;s (Aliens\, the Abys
s\, Titanic\, Avatar) exacting direction\, and Stan Winsto
n’\;s celebrated makeup and effects work\, The Terminator
also helped propagate the ‘\;80s hard body masculinity that would b
e taken to steroidal extremes in the era’\;s action films that foll
owed its success.

A funny and unnerving indie mockumentary by mumblecore p
rogenitor Andrew Bujalski\, done in an improvisatory style (cast and cre
w worked off of an eight-page script treatment)\, and largely cast with
non-professional actors\, Computer Chess follows competitors at
a 1980 tournament as they strategize\, tinker with their enormous ̶
0\;portable”\; terminals\, win\, lose\, and gossip about military s
ecrets—\;all while navigating interactions with the human encounter
group currently occupying the same hotel. Shot on a retrofitted 1970s b
lack-and white-video camera to evoke period-specific media and documenta
ry aesthetics\, the film investigates what it means to extend the bounda
ries of intelligence\, and how those efforts\, in turn\, might make us m
ore like machines than we care to acknowledge. The film first bowed at t
he 2013 Sundance Film Festival\, where it won the Alfred P. Sloan Featur
e Film Prize\, given to a feature film that focuses on science or techno
logy as a theme.

For
the Greeks and Romans\, myths were everywhere. Stories were painted on p
ottery\, carved into temples\, they inspired the songs they sang and the
rituals they performed. Myths provided a shared cultural language\, and
an ever-branching network of routes towards understanding the nature of
the world. They deal\, in short\, with the hard\, basic facts of the hu
man condition. \;
Drawn on sources by writers in Greece and moder
n-day Algeria\, Libya\, Egypt\, Turkey\, and Italy\, author Charlotte Hi
ggins embraces a central metaphor—\;weaving—\;that leads the v
iewer through interconnected stories of eight women\, both human and div
ine\, shining a new light on their meanings. \;
Over two even
ings (April 15 and 29)\, join Assistant Professor of Cl
assics Celia Campbell for a discussion of Charlotte Higgins’\;
Greek Myths: A New Retelling\, examining classic myths through a ne
w lens. \;
“\;Higgins (Red Thread: On Mazes and Lab
yrinths) delivers a luminous collection of Greek myths relayed by women
and goddesses through the weaving of tapestries. Many of the fantastical
stories of witches\, slayers\, and monsters feature violence against wo
men and familial murder . . . Higgins’\;s versions are consistently
smart and imaginative. This makes for a provocative and alluring reanim
ation of the classics.”\; \;
—\;Publishers Weekly
160\;
\;
“\;Charlotte Higgins\, chief cultural crit
ic for The Guardian\, [grew up reading] the standard issue classics of t
he past however many centuries\, which leaned heavily not on the role of
women in the telling of those tales. Greek Myths: A New Retelling
em> is Higgins’\;s splendid re-balancing act. Reimagining antiquity
’\;s legends by centering them on women as both chroniclers and chr
onicled\, she places her distaff halves where they literally had the mos
t to say: at their looms. The weaving of textiles not only depicted the
stories but furnished the text-textiles metaphor for storytelling itself
\, handing her a compelling case.”\; - National Book Review \;

“\;Have you ever had a dream\, Neo\, that you were
so sure was real?...How would you know the difference between the dream
world and the real world?”\; technoterroist Morpheus (Laurence Fish
burne) asks computer programmer/possible messiah Thomas Anderson (Keanu
Reeves)\, who goes by the nom de hacker Neo. With the help of M
orpheus\, Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss)\, and a ragtag group of “\;unp
lugged”\; human rebels\, Neo learns that reality is in fact a simul
ation run by sentient machines powered by billions of humans in suspende
d animation—\;and that he might be The One who can manipulate and d
estroy these machines\, thereby liberating humanity. The turn-of-the-mil
lennium thriller somehow mainstreamed both Baudrillard and cyberpunk thr
ough innovative “\;bullet time”\; special effects\, startling
fight choreography by Hong Kong action legend Yuen Woo-ping\, and stunni
ng visuals by director siblings Lily and Lana Wachowski. While the film
won a host of technical Oscars\, its ability to interrogate the nature o
f free will through kinetic filmmaking and wall-to-wall ass-kicking ceme
nted it as one of the most well-loved and impactful blockbusters of all
time. More recently\, The Matrix’\;s themes of claiming on
e’\;s true identity\, and its depiction of transformative mental an
d physical experiences\, have led the film\, made by formerly closeted t
rans filmmakers\, to be embraced and celebrated as a trans allegory of s
elf-knowledge.

In which “\;the living manifestation of destiny\,
8221\; agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) of the Impossible Mission Force\, s
quares off against “\;The Entity”\; a rogue AI that threatens
the balance of world power. Featuring Cruise performing one of the crazi
est stunts in movie history\, far more close-up magic than you might exp
ect\, and a grab-bag of religious references and digitally-inflected esc
hatology\, director Christopher McQuarrie stuffs the latest Mission:
Impossible with ideas and thrills in (almost) equal measure. The g
lobetrotting actioner reunites audiences with Hunt’\;s team-slash-a
dopted-family—\;MI6 agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) and longtim
e IMF best bros Benji (Simon Pegg) and Luther (Ving Rhames)—\;while
introducing us to professional thief Grace (Haley Atwell) and the myste
rious Gabriel (Esai Morales)\, the Entity’\;s right-hand man\, who
has a long history with Ethan. Come for handcuffed Cruise and Atwell car
eening around the Spanish Steps in a stolen car and stay for the existen
tial terror wrought by an untethered AI. Speaking of the latter: after a
screening of the film at Camp David last year\, Joe Biden’\;s chie
f of staff Bruce Reed said\, “\;If [the President] hadn'\;t alre
ady been concerned about what could go wrong with AI before that movie\,
he saw plenty more to worry about.”\;

Unaccompanied music has been around for as long as peop
le have gathered to sing. From medieval monks singing chants to the comp
lex harmonies of Eric Whitacre\, composers again and again find new ways
to create beauty with human voices.
And only voices. Sopranos\, alto
s\, tenors\, and basses. No keyboard\, no orchestra.
Singing \;a
cappella \;is choral music in its purest form. Every aspect of the m
usic—\;melody\, harmony\, rhythm\, texture—\;comes to life thr
ough the interplay of our voices alone. It is a kind of incarnation\, of
breath becoming sound.
Over the centuries\, hundreds of thousands of
\;a cappella \;choral works have been written. For this concert
\, we’\;ll sing a few of our favorites.
