Description | On April 12, Dr. Kamilah Majied of Howard University will facilitate the “Fierce Compassion: Contemplative Practices for Nurturing Social and Environmental Justice” retreat. This event is convened by UWB faculty (IAS & NHS faculty Alice Pedersen, Lauren Lichty, and Carrie Lanza) and sponsored by the UW Bothell Engagement Ambassador Work Group, Organizational Excellence Human Resources, the UW Resilience Lab, UWB Diversity Council, and multiple UWB schools. For more information about the event, and to read Dr. Majied's bio, please click here We invite faculty, staff, and students who are interested in coming together supportively to develop skills for integrating contemplative practice* into our work on- and off-campus. This continues efforts across the UW Bothell community to build a campus culture of self- and community-care that addresses the burnout and distress that comes with doing intensive justice work, particularly among marginalized people engaged in institutional activism. Our goal is to build a more just and compassionate campus. Please register here. You will be emailed a registration link after completing the application *Please see the linked “Tree of Contemplative Practices” for more on the types of practices and skills that will be included. Note, while these practices can be found in many spiritual traditions, contemplative practices are not exclusively religious, and are supported by research across both the neurobiological and social and emotional learning fields of study. The practices are open to people of all-faiths, backgrounds, and abilities. |
