Description | Jonathan Stalling will perform and discuss his work across a range of translational projects and answer questions. Stalling will be presenting in dialogue with an MFA seminar on the Gothic and new materialism, taught by Joe Milutis for UW Bothell's MFA in Creative Writing and Poetics. This Convergence Zone event is free and open to the public. Jonathan Stalling is a poet, translator, editor, and scholar working at the intersection of Chinese and English. Dr. Stalling is Professor of English specializing in East-West Poetics at the University of Oklahoma, where he is a founding editor of Chinese Literature Today magazine and book series and the Curator of the Chinese Literature Translation Archive at the Bizzell Memorial library. Stalling is the founding of the US-China Poetry Dialog and the Newman Prize for English Jueju (which is introducing the Chinese poetic form into English). Stalling is the author or editor of eight books including three full-length books of poetry including Grotto Heaven (Chex, 2010), Yingelishi (Counterpath, 2011), and Lost Wax (Tinfishish, 2016). His libretto Yingelishi, 吟歌丽诗, was staged at Yunnan University in 2010, and a new version by the composer Yan Yiguo was staged by Opera 180 in Kansas City in 2018. Stalling's poetry explores the space of the self in relation to others and other languages. A large-scale exhibition of his interlanguage artwork includes a traditional Chinese movable woodblock printing press upon which his latest work "The English Rime Tables" was printed, is currently on display at the University of Missouri following exhibitions at Oklahoma University, Stanford University, and Biola College. |
