If you had the chance to possibly save someone’s life, would you? Every day, countless people with rare blood cancers face uncertainty and certain death due to their inability to find the near-enough marrow donor match that would cure them of their cancer. The good news is that saving their lives is simple: the more people who register to be possible marrow donor matches, the more matches are found and the more lives are saved. That’s the simple logic at the heart of the UW’s ongoing partnership with Be The Match, the nation’s largest marrow donor registry: by growing and diversifying the marrow and stem cell donor registry, we are making immediate, individualized impact in terms of lives saved and dreams realized. But don’t take it from us. On Wednesday, April 17, we invite you to share in the inspiring stories of three UW community members—Dr. Alexes Harris, a staff member Joe Grojean, and former student Landon Bennett—to learn just how immediate your impact can be. Join The Whole U and the UW Combined Fund Drive in HUB 250 from noon to 1:00 p.m. for a special Be The Match event illustrating the pressing need for young, diverse potential donors and illuminating the life-giving gift YOU can potentially give to a total stranger in dire need. Together, we will… Meet cord blood recipient and UW professor Alexes Harris and hear about her struggle to find a match while battling a rare blood cancer Listen as UW staff member Joe Grojean reveals his own story as a stem cell recipient who found new life via a young donor across the continent Learn about the life-altering feeling of what it’s like to save a life as UW graduate Landon Bennett shares his incredible experience as a donor For the thousands of people diagnosed every year with life-threatening blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, a cure exists. You could be the match. The cure could be you. If you are between the ages of 18 and 44, you can register with the Be The Match registry and potentially have immediate life-altering impact. The UW’s goal is to diversify the Be The Match registry by 2,500 new registrants over the next two years. Refreshments will be provided and admission is free. So what’s stopping you from becoming the life-saving force in someone else’s life? Open to all faculty, staff and students. Cohosted by the UW Combined Fund Drive and The Whole U. |
