Mary Coss is an interdisciplinary artist known for haunting installations that explore the human condition. Born in Detroit and living in Seattle, Coss received her MFA from Syracuse University, Dept. of Experimental Studios. This hybrid sculpture and media department introduced a life-long interest in layering social relevance with sculpture, projection and sound. Coss’ extensive exhibition record includes galleries, museums and sculpture parks, with recognition by multiple awards, grants, and residencies such as NEA, Ford and Puffin Foundations, 4Culture, Artist Trust, Willapa Bay AiR and Cill Rialaig. Public Debt to the Suffragette received ACLU’s “Art to Change the World: Inspiring Social Justice” award. Her public work encompasses commissions and socially engaged practices. Ghost Log, on the Tacoma waterfront, melds a monumental scaled sculpture with a historically registered artifact and pays homage to the Puyallup Tribe and their language with the accompanying sound installation. Coss has built international partnerships that include a cultural exchange and exhibit at Candyland Arts in Stockholm, and artist engagements in Canada, Ireland, Turkey and Guatemala. She is cofounder of METHOD Gallery. https://marycoss.com https://vimeo.com/marycoss. https://www.instagram.com/marycoss_studio/ |
