Description | Classes and readers of all ages (third grade and up suggested) are invited to this live event with Clare Hodgson Meeker, winner of the 2020 Washington State Book Award for Young Readers for Growing Up Gorilla: How a Zoo Baby Brought Her Family Together. This heartwarming true story chronicles what happened after a mother gorilla gave birth for the first time and then walked away from her newborn baby at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. The dedicated staff worked tirelessly to find innovative ways for mother and baby to build a relationship. The efforts were ultimately successful, as baby Yola bonded with her mother and the rest of the family group. Clare will share photos and stories about baby Yola and also tell how she researched the book and give tips to young writers. Our special guests for this event will be two third-grade classrooms -- and students, classes and readers everywhere are invited to join in! Don’t miss this chance to have an author “visit” live! Clare Hodgson Meeker’s books and magazine stories explore the lives of endangered animals, including elephants (HANSA), sea otters (LOOTAS), Siberian tigers, African rhinos, and Hawaiian monk seals (RHINO RESCUE!) We will record and caption this event for those who are unable to attend, and it will be posted on The Seattle Public Library’s YouTube channel. This event is presented by the Washington Center for the Book (a partnership of The Seattle Public Library and the Washington State Library) and the Washington Library Association. The event is free and will be presented on Zoom. Registration is required to receive the event link. The event will be recorded and can be accessed on SPL's YouTube channel. |
